Thirty Two: The Beauty of Art

(Wednesday)

I couldn't stop thinking about Borupen. Ever since yesterday, he's been on my mind. I tried calling and texting Nemesis-kun to reconcile with him, but he wouldn't answer.

I guess he blocked my number. After changing into my indoor shoes, I spotted Borupen by the Occult Club, sketching a skull.

"What's so special about this skull? Why do you keep sketching it?" I asked him. "Something about it intrigues me," He stated.

"What intrigues you, Amaya Aishi? Do you like to sketch as well?"

"Sometimes, but I'm not really good at it." I admitted. "Shame. Maybe I can give you some lessons. I can teach you a few things." Borupen mentioned. "You wouldn't mind?" I asked.

"Not at all. We seem to have some things in common. Let's see what else we have in common. In return, I'd like you to do something for me."

"Like what?"

"We can discuss that later. Meet me in the Workshop at the East Wing of the second floor after class."

"Okay."

(Lunchtime)

"What do you prefer to draw with? Paint or colored pencils?" Borupen asked. "Um... paint." I answered.

He provided me with some art tools as he had me wear an apron so I wouldn't get any paint on myself. "When you're painting, you have to spontaneous and passionate. Make sure you paint with smooth and easy strokes." Borupen advised.

"Right," I replied. "But what should I paint?"

"Hmm..." Borupen thought for a moment before looking out the window. "Try painting the sky. Don't just draw what you see. Draw how you see it," I looked out the window, noticing how some dark clouds were forming.

We must be in for a storm later on today. I picked up a paintbrush, then began painting the sky. "Remember, smooth and easy strokes." Borupen reminded me.

I gave a nod and continued. I set my paintbrush down when I was finished, then stood up from my stool.

"What do you think?" I asked. "Not bad. Very brooding." Borupen said. "I like it. Let's paint a few more."

We painted a few more pieces while Borupen gave me more pointers on painting. "Thank you for the lesson, Borupen. You've helped me a lot." I said while giving a polite bow.

"I'm glad I was able to help," He replied. "See you later."

I waved to him and he walked away. "What was that about?" Yan-kun asked from behind me. "What do you mean?" I replied, my back still facing him.

"What were you two doing?"

"Nothing. Just painting."

"Painting? Since when were you interested in painting?"

"I've been interested in it for a while now. Come on, let's head to class."

Yan-kun shrugged his shoulders and we walked back to the classroom.

(After school)

I went by Genka's office, but the doors were locked. "I take it Genka didn't tell you." Kuroko said from behind me. I turned around so I was facing her.

"Tell me what?" I asked. "Genka had a faculty meeting to attend to." She explained. "Do you know when she'll be back?" I asked.

"She won't be coming back until tomorrow. But she told me to tell you that you can come by tomorrow morning." Kuroko said.

"Okay. Thanks, anyway." I replied, then walked away. I went to the roof and leaned against the railing as I looked at my phone.

I wanted to see if Nemesis-kun texted me back or at least called me, but there was nothing. Sighing to myself, I put my phone back in my pocket.

"Ah, Amaya Aishi. Just the person I wanted to see," I got off the railing and turned around to be met with Borupen.

"Strangely, I had a feeling you'd be up here," He said. "Listen, remember that little favor I had in mind earlier today? Well, now's the time to repay your debt. Please follow me."

I didn't argue and followed him down the stairs, then into the hallway. "What would you like me to do?" I asked. "Put this on please." He said, handing me an outfit with a hanger.

"Why do you want me to wear this?" I asked as I took the hanger. "I want to sketch you... while wearing this outfit." Borupen answered.

"Oh... Okay." I said. Since he did teach me how to paint, this is the least I can do for him as payment for his help.

I went into a changing room and got changed into the outfit he gave me. "It fits. Good." He said with relief. Borupen instructed me to have a seat in the chair, then got out his tools.

"Look only at me, and stay perfectly still." He instructed. "Okay." I replied with a nod. I stared at Borupen as he sketched me.

'If the Art Club didn't exist, he'd be in the Occult Club, huh? I guess I could see him in that club. But he doesn't seem to be interested in joining that club nonetheless.' I thought

"Hey, Amaya Aishi," Borupen spoke, making me break my train of thought. "You don't seem like the type of person who would like dark subjects of art. What changed your mind?"

"Let's just say, people don't stay the same forever." I expressed, emotionlessly. "So, I've heard." He replied as he continued to sketch.

"Borupen-senpai, why do you say my full name when you don't have to?" I asked. His hand movement stopped as he looked at me.

"I don't know. I just feel like it. Does it bother you?" He asked. "No. Not at all." I answered. "Hold that position a little while longer. I'm almost done." Borupen said.

I gave a nod, and he continued with his sketch. Once he was finished, he told me I could move. "Would you like to see it?" Borupen asked. "Sure." I replied, and he showed me his work.

"That's how you see me?"

"Yes. Rememer what I told you earlier. I don't draw what I see. I draw how I see."

"Right, I remember."

"So, what do you think? Wait, let me guess, you hate it?"

"No, I don't hate it. I like it, really."

"Honestly?"

"Truthfully."

Borupen looked at me with a tint of pink on his cheeks before smiling at me.

"I'm glad you like it. I decided to paint you standing. If I had asked, I know that'd be tiresome for you to stand there for such a long time." He replied.

I softly smiled back at him until he noticed I was still wearing the outfit. "Oh, right. I should probably get changed and return this to you." I said.

"No, that's okay. I want you to keep it. Besides, it looks good on you," He commented. Now, it was my turn to blush. "Amaya Aishi, would you like to have lunch with me again tomorrow?"

"Sure." I said, smiling. Borupen smiled back at me and took my hand as we stared into each other's eyes. Behind those red eyes, I could see a lake of negativity.

Borupen sees the world differently. But how differently, I wonder?
