Near one-shot

Ashley’s pov

Another boring day, sitting here in this boring computer room. How’d this happen to me? A few weeks ago, I was with my boyfriend, ex-boyfriend now, and here I am sitting with his rival. His RIVAL. What the hell is he going to think if he finds out? Oh yeah, forgot to tell you my name. It’s Ashley I‘m 17 years old, yep and my ex-boyfriend is the ferocious Mello. And of course, let’s not forget the cool headed Near. Truth be told, I’ve been having feelings for Near. After Mello and I broke up, I left the mafia and came to work with Near. Yeah, idiot right? Hey, I didn’t know he was Mello’s rival back then. Anyways, Near’s been making sure Mello doesn’t find out about me staying here. Mostly like, taking my cell phone away and disconnecting it. Oh well, at least Mello won’t find me.

“Ashley.”

I snapped out of my thoughts and turned my head to Near, who was back on the floor, playing with his toys. Nobody else was here today. He thought they needed a break and told them to take a day off. Since I live here, I had to stay.

“Um….yes Near?” I walked over and knelt down to his level.

“Is there something wrong? You’ve been spacing out all afternoon since 10:00 this morning.”

He keeps track of when I spaced out? O_o

He’s never this concerned about me. The most we’ve talked about is the Kira investigation. Even then it’s not that much. What’s he up to?

“I’m just thinking Near. No need to worry about that.”

He looked up from his toys and stared into my eyes. For a second, I got lost into them. Near’s eyes always had some kind of hold on me. Suddenly, I felt something warm on my cheek. My eyes glanced over to my right cheek and saw……………………………..

NEAR’S LIPS ON THEM?!

What the hell?! When did that happen? His lips left my face and I felt a small hint of disappointment.

“N-near, what’d you do that for?”

He went back to playing his toys like it was nothing.

“I simply took your temperature. Isn’t that what mother’s used to do in the old days? You seemed to be a little flushed.”

(Me: they really did do that in the old days. XD)

Crap, I’m probably red all over. Why’d he have to do that?

“Um….thanks Near.”

He shrugged.

“I’ll be right back.”

I walked my way to the corner and once I was past it, my feet flew to my bathroom. I turned the sink on and splashed some water in my face. What the heck? Why do I have these feelings for Near. I shouldn’t be doing this. He’s Mello’s rival. But I’m not even with Mello anymore so why should I be scared. Damn it! I can’t think straight and it’s all because of that kiss. I sighed.

“That kiss did feel good. What if-”

BANG!

I snapped my head up to the sound.

There’s only one person I know who can make that much noise. And his rival is right in the next room! I slammed the door opened and ran back to the main computer room. Once I got there, I saw Near being held by his shirt by….Mello. His eyes locked with mine and I felt a shiver go down my spine. I noticed a bullet hole in one of the computers.

“Mello what’re you doing here?!” I yelled.

He dropped Near and came closer to me.

“What do you mean?! We have one fight and I find out you run away and to HIM!!”

He pointed his gun to Near sitting close by. He stared intently at Mello.

“I told you we’re done! I’m sick of your bossy attitude.”

His held his gun up and aimed at me.

“You don’t go until I say you do!”

Near suddenly got up and got in front of me.

“Near?” I stared at him in disbelief.

Why is he protecting me?

“I’m surprised of you Near. Even when we were children, I never saw this much emotions coming from you. Don’t tell me you’re falling for this skank.”

That hit a spot. Mello was an awful boyfriend but I did have feelings for him. Hearing him say those words stung.

“Who needs you? With both of you out of the way, I can find Kira by myself.”

I tried pushing Near out of the way but he didn’t budge.

“Stop! Don’t die just because of me!!”

CLINCK!

I stared up at Mello and widened my eyes. I don’t believe it. Mello clutched his heart gasping for air. He fell to his knees, right beside his gun.

He’s having a heart attack.

As he breathed his last breath, his eyes drifted over to Near and I. His chest stopped moving and his eyes stayed on us.

“Mello…..”

Slowly, Near walked over to the body, feeling his pulse.

“He’s dead.”

I didn’t know if I should have felt anger at Kira or thanked him. He spared me and Near of our lives. But yet, I still held this small liking to Mello.

“Miheal….”

SIX MONTHS LATER

It’s done. Everything is back to normal. Kira is dead. Criminals have increased once again. I stood in front of the tombstones, staring at the names written on them. Near stood beside me, holding the white tulips. We each placed one on the graves.

“L….Mail….and Miheal…” Near muttered.

I stared at him, his head looking down.

“If only I had figured this out sooner. Maybe some of your lives would’ve been spared.”

I brought my hand closer to his hand and laced my fingers with his. He looked up into my eyes and I gave a sympathetic smile.

“I’m sure they’re just as happy that you caught Kira.”

I lightly kissed his cheek.

He showed a smile to me, the ones he only shows to me, and placed a kiss on my lips. I brought my hands up to his hair and tangled my fingers in them. It’s another one of our most passionate kisses. We broke free for air and leaned on his shoulder.

“Thank you Ashley. Or should I call you Mrs. Rivers.”

A laughed escaped my lips.

“I guess you should.”
