fifty-eight.

After a ridiculous amount of time convincing JJ she would be fine, June was seated on  the floor, her knees pulled to her chest as she waited for them to return. She was humming a tune, the girl picking at her cuticles as she started to get bored, not only bored but lonely. Her curiosity got the best of her, Junes eyes falling on the cross  that was laying on the ground in the church.

June crawled over,  her knees scraping against the wood as she sat beside the cross. She lifted her fingers, her eyes observing the marvelous piece of art in front of her. She touched it and it was almost as if the worth of it was immediately clear, June in awe at the sight of all the details on it.

A twig broke somewhere outside of the door, June turning her head quickly, her eyes narrowing as she searched for the source of the noise. She didn't hear anything else, the girl furrowing her eyebrows and looking back at the cross. Her lips parted as she looked at the gold, the girl realizing this was a second chance for all of her friends, Pope would get to go to school and losing the scholarship didn't even matter.

"Well this day just keeps getting better and better." June jumped at the sound of the familiar voice, her stomach dropping into a pit and her heart leaping to her throat. She pushed herself off of the ground, looking towards the door where Rafe Cameron was standing. "This is just perfect. Seriously. Perfect."  Rafe said, the boy tilting his head at her as he sent her a chilling smile, his eyes narrowing. June's voice was stuck in her throat, the girl unsure what to say as Rafe finally looked past her, his eyebrows raising as he looked at the cross on the floor.

"Looks like you found it for me. How nice of you." His threatening tone was enough to make June's blood boil, her heart beating so frantically in her chest that she thought it would fly out in a few moments. Rafe pursed his lips as his eyes travelled back to June ever so slowly, the thing he cared about most in the room, his hand raising as he narrowed them.

There was something about him now, something particularly villainous shrouding him as June stood in shock, her arms at her side as he studied her. He clicked his tongue, a humorless chuckle falling from his lips as he took a single step closer to her, June dropping her eyes to his foot.

"Where's your friends June? I know you didn't find this yourself." He took another step, June gulping as she realized the danger she was in. Pope was hurt, there was no way they would be back anytime soon.  Rafe took a few more steps, the two of them not far from each other now as he looked at her with an expectant look, June trying to think of what to say.

"They're on their way back. They're coming." June said, her voice shaking as she did so. She closed her eyes as he stopped, the girl realizing how completely unconvincing she had sounded. Rafe bit his lip, the boy scratching his cheek as he gave her a nod.

"So I take it they're not coming back anytime soon." Rafe said, nodding his head as footsteps sounded from outside the door.

"Rafe did you find it?" Renfield said as he pushed through the church door, his eyes falling on June and then falling on the cross on the floor. He hurried over, a smile on his face as he went to walk towards the cross but June was quick to get in front of him, the girl shaking her head.

"No! No. I'm not gonna let you have it."  June stood her ground, the two men sharing a look as she said it. Rafe let out a laugh, Renfield joining as  Rafe took a step forwards.

"Move June. Or I'll move you." Rafe said, getting in her face.  June shook her head, the fear in her eyes evident as she stared up at Rafe. He let out a sigh, glaring at her for a moment before grabbing her by the biceps, pushing her to the side. June stumbled,  falling onto her ass but quickly rebounding, the girl running over and jumping in front of the cross again.

"What do you  gain from this Rafe? Huh? Stealing something that  you know doesn't belong to you?!" June yelled, pushing the Cameron boy back.

"I'm-I'm not doing this with you." He said, moving her to the side again and finally getting past her. June ran forwards, pushing Renfield as hard as she could, the man only stumbling a little bit. Rafe grabbed her from behind, the girl flailing in his arms as he dropped her to the ground. She landed with a thud, Rafe leaning over her as her breathing started to pick up.

"Stay put." Rafe said, pushing her back down as Renfield started to grab the cross.  June let out a huff though, the girl pushing herself off of the ground.  She glared at Rafe, anger gripping her as she tried to think of what to do to stop them. She was met with a daunting clicking sound, her eyes going past  Rafe and to Renfield, the man holding a gun up to the girl. June's eyes fluttered to Rafe, the boy staring at the gun in Renfields hands and who it was pointed at,  his eyes widening as he realized what was happening. The urge to get the cross on the truck was more extreme than the urge to stop Renfield from pointing a gun at the only person he loved other than himself, Rafe nodding at the other man and heading toward the cross.

June stood there, watching as they struggled to get it on the truck,  Renfield lecturing her on how stupid she and her friends were for leaving her there.  Rafe was pretty much silent the whole time, the boy only glancing at her every few moments as the guilt licked at his skin. His body burned to be near her, his skin screaming to touch hers. He could feel his mind fighting with him to stop, to tell Renfield to put the gun down but his urge to provide for his family, his need for his fathers validation was too appealing, too strong. Even June couldn't deter him from finishing this task.

When the cross was safely put in the truck Renfield went outside to tie it in, leaving June and Rafe alone together. The Cameron boy stood where the cross had once been, his tongue running over his top row of teeth as he thought of something to say.

"You know I didn't mean to push Zach right?" Rafe said, his eyes turning to the girl. Her face contorted to one of disgust as he caught her eyes, June taking a few steps towards him.

"I don't believe you for a second Rafe. You told me in the hospital that you did it because he was going to find out about us!  You said you did it for me. Don't backtrack now." June spit, Rafe gritting his teeth as she called him out on his lies. He hadn't meant to push Zach, but he hadn't regretted it. He didn't care.

"I did do it for you! I did it because I love-"

"I'm tired of this. Oh my God Rafe , I don't care! What do you think I'm gonna say? Huh?! That I love you too?! You threatened me, you murdered someone in front of me, you attacked me, you broke into my house, you pushed my friend from a tower, you framed me for murder. You just stole from my friend! What do you want from me?! You take everything! You are driving me insane! What more do you want?!"

Rafe watched as June yelled at him, his chest tightening as he fought to not say anything, to not make her even more mad at him. His jaw clenched as his fists tightened at his side, the boy using any bit of self control he could possibly find to keep himself from doing something he would surely regret. Her words hurt, more than he'd ever care to admit, his eyes momentarily filling with tears as he bit back a grimace, Rafe realizing that he was nowhere near her reciprocating his feelings.  In an act of good will he decided to leave her alone, instead shaking his head at her words.

"Tell Pope that I'll see him soon." Rafe said, turning on his heel and heading towards the door. June started to pace, the girls hands going to her hair as she felt the anger bubble in her chest. She wanted to fight with him, she wanted to argue, and he hadn't even given her the chance. She spit her next words out like venom, the words burning him like acid.

"Fuck you Rafe! I hate you." June shouted, just as he was past the door, her fist clenched as she said it. He stopped in the doorway, her words cutting into his skin like a knife, his jaw clenching as he contemplated what to do. Rafe turned around in the  doorway, his head peaking back around the wood as he looked at her. She was seething, the dirt covering her body now that she had been thrown on the floor a few times. A thought occurred to him, the Cameron boy deciding not to leave her, but to show her just how much she could hate him.

"You hate me? You hate me?" Rafe asked, turning around  with his lip curled up in disgust. His anger was guiding him, his face twitching as he turned to look at her completely. June immediately regretted what she had said as she realized she had only provoked him. The boy stalked over to her quickly, June stepping back a few steps as he grabbed her by the arm.

"What are you doing?" She asked, her eyes going down to look at the hand that was gripping her.

"Now that I think about it, I might need you for some leverage or something. Yo-I'm-you're essential. Yeah. I could use you as leverage just in case John B or JJ get any ideas. I- fuck! Okay. Yeah." Rafe was half talking to her, half talking to himself, the boy pulling her to his chest and wrapping his arm around her neck. Her hands flew up to his arm, trying to pry it away from her neck but his grip was too tight, the headlock too strong as he started to lead her out of the church.

"Rafe stop! Stop!" She yelled, tears coming to her eyes as she realized what was happening. She was being kidnapped by Rafe.

"No! No yo-you hate me right? You think I'm the bad guy?! I'm gonna prove it to you. I'm the bad guy. I'm your bad guy. That's f-fine. That's- let go June. Fucking walk!" June stumbled across the floor, her feet getting caught on a  wooden board and making her trip. She fell to the floor, Rafe quickly reaching down and grabbing her by the waist, throwing her over his shoulder and running out to the car.

"Hey what the hell Rafe?!" Renfield yelled, his eyebrows furrowing as he looked at the Cameron boy who was very much kidnapping June. She was fighting against him, the girl trying to get off of his back but his grip being too tight  around her legs, there was no getting away.

"Shut up!" Rafe yelled, throwing June in the back of the truck.

"No! No! Wait! Please Rafe!" June pleaded, the girl beating against the door as he closed it. Rafe sniffled as he walked around the side of the truck, the boy slapping the side as he pulled himself into the front seat. Renfield was already sitting there, his eyebrows furrowed as he looked at Rafe, the boy not looking at him and just running a hand over his face, trying to calm himself down. He felt fear grip his heart as he remembered her words, Rafe realizing that she had told him that she hated him. He had only ever heard her say that once before, and it had almost killed him when he had.

"You know what sucks man? You know what fucking sucks?!" Rafe punched the steering wheel, Renfields eyes widening as he looked at the unhinged Rafe who was on the verge of an episode.

"What?" The older man asked, his head turning quickly as he heard June beat on the wall of the truck. Rafe just sniffled, looking down at his hands and letting out a sigh as he closed his eyes, tilting his head to the side as he came to terms with what he had just done, what he was going to do. The sound of June's screams started to fill both of their ears, the girl screaming for Rafe to let her out, apologies flying from her lips at a rapid rate, falling on deaf ears.

"It sucks when people just can't be grateful for what you've done for them. When they can't just accept your love. You hear that?! You hear that June?! Why can't you just be grateful for once?!" Rafe yelled, beating on the back of the wall, Renfield looking at him like he was crazy as he did it. June stumbled back as the truck took off, her breathing heavy as she realized how absolutely fucked she was right now. Not only had she lost the cross, she had been kidnapped by a psychotic Rafe, whose intentions were completely unclear. She put her hands in her hair, the girl shaking as she tried to hold onto something so that she didn't fall again. She felt an insane amount of panic wash over her as she clung onto the fact that JJ had no idea  where her or the cross would be. There was nothing she could do to get in contact with him.

"No no! This can't be happening!" She screamed, kicking the wall of the truck as it took off. June stumbled to the door, searching frantically to find a latch of some sorts. When she found nothing she put her hands in her hair, dropping to the floor and letting out a ridiculous scream.

"Fuck!"
