sarcasm isn't an attitude, it's an art

"THANKS for letting me invite Caroline," Echo spoke as she walked into the kitchen, going straight for the coffee. "She could use a day of distraction."

Jenna had organized a barbeque, and Echo had immediately asked to invite Caroline, knowing the blonde needed a break after turning into a vampire and breaking up with Matt to protect him.

"She's not the plus one I'm worried about," Jenna said before raising an eyebrow at the girl. "Why is Damon coming?"

"Because Alaric is a pity-taker," Elena said, looking over at her. "Come on, Jenna, be nice."

"I'll be nice when Damon learns to keep his paws off you," Jenna said, making Echo smirk.

Suddenly, Mason Lockwood walked into the room, saying, "Ah, good news! Found the shot glasses."

"And that would be my exit," Echo and Elena said simultaneously before exiting the room.

Echo went and found Caroline, who was holding the bowl of chips closely. She frowned at the newly turned vampire, and asked, "You okay?"

"I'm starving," Caroline answerd, stuffing her mouth with the chips.

Echo pursed her lips, looking the blonde up and down. "You still look beautiful, by the way."

Caroline paused and smiled at her bestfriend. "You really mean that?"

Echo smiled and said, "Yeah. Come on, let's go sit outside for a minute."

Caroline nodded and smiled, and the duo went outside, and approached Elena who was on the phone.

She saw the two and said, "Call me when you can."

"Was that Stefan?" Caroline asked as she sat down in the seat next to Elena.

Echo plopped down on the porch swing and started to swing back and forth like a little kid as Elena said, "He hasn't called me back. I'm trying to decide if I should be worried."

"I'm sure he's fine," Caroline stated, leaning back into the chair. "God, I cannot stop eating. Stefan says it's a great way to sublimate the cravings. It's horrible. Fighting the urge for blood every minute of every day."

"I know that Stefan really hates that part of himself," Elena said with a nod.

Caroline nodded and said, "Well, yeah. And he hates that you're a constant temptation."

"He said that?" Elena asked, making Echo raise her eyebrows.

Caroline nodded and said, "The desire to rip out your jugular every time he's with you? Trust me, it's there. It's why I had to break up with Matt."

"Hey, food's ready," Alaric announced, walking outside. "Come get it."

Echo hopped off the porch swing as Caroline stood, saying, "Finally. I'm starving."

The two headed inside, leaving Elena to think on the porch.

"DRESS! Ballerina! Ballet!" Jenna yelled as they watched Damon draw on the board, trying to guess what it is.

"Puppy!" Caroline tried, "Puppy with a tutu!"

Echo sat on the floor by Caroline's feet, her legs tucked under her as her, and she was sipping her coffee, and stuffing her mouth with chips.

Damon shook his head and said, "No."

"Dog, hound dog!? You ain't nothing but a hound dog!?" Jenna yelled out, practically jumping up and down in her seat.

Echo groaned and tried to say something, but it came out mumbled because of all the food in her mouth. Alaric chuckled at her, shaking his head.

Mason rolled his eyes and said, "'Dances With Wolves'."

Everyone turned to look at him, and Damon said, "Mason wins... again."

"How is that a wolf?" Echo asked as she stood. "That looks like a pile of shit."

He frowned at her. "You don't have any room to talk, missy," he countered and smirked at her offended expression.

"Hey!" She exclaimed and he laughed, heading into the kitchen as Echo paused and said, "no offence because that is true."

"I need more coffee..." she trailed off to herself before heading into the kitchen, Jenna following after her.

"There you are," Jenna said as she saw Elena in the kitchen with Damon. "Isn't this fun?"

"Yes. Thank you so much for inviting me," Damon said with a smile.

Jenna tilted her head and harshly asked, "Did I have a choice?"

"I know what you must think about me," Damon said.

Jenna shook her head and said, "No, you don't."

Echo then jumped onto Damon's back and he quickly grabbed her legs to make sure she was safe. "He's actually great once you get to know him," she stated, glancing over Damon's shoulder at her aunt. "Unless he is snapping your neck," she whispered so only Damon could hear, and he pinched her which made her squirm before biting his shoulder. He let out a yell before dropping her.

"Hey!" She shouted from her place on the floor, her ass hurting from the fall. "Assbutt!" She exclaimed before standing up, and going to the coffee machine.

Jenna shook her head, amused, before leaving the kitchen.

Elena laughed at that and Damon looked over at the silverware set, asking, "Are those silver?"

"Yeah, they're our Grandmother's," Echo stated, sipping her coffee. "Are you going to try and stab Mason with one?"

"Sort of," Damon said with a shrug before grinning at her.

About half an hour or so later, everyone sat at the kitchen table.

"Mason," Damon said, walking over to the table with the cobbler in his hand, "Why don't you start us off."

Echo blinked as Damon wrapped his arms around her, but she didn't shrug his arm off. He sat down beside her, grinning, doing the eye thing he always does.

"Sure," Mason said before noticing the silver serving knife. He turned the plate around, and picked up the cobbler with his hands. Damon tilted his head, and the man laughed, and said, "What? I apologize. I'm an animal."

Everyone laughed before Alaric said, "So, Mason, you and Jenna never dated?"

Damon pulled Echo a little closer to him, and the Gilbert twins both shared a confused expression, but neither said or did anything.

"She was always lost in Logan Fell-Land," Mason said with a laugh.

Jenna placed the glasses down on the table, saying, "Ah, my first mistake. Mason was a catch. He had girls lining up."

"Really?" Damon asked, playing with a strand of Echo's hair, and she was amused with him. "Huh. I always pegged you for a lone wolf."

Echo looked over at Alaric, and the man gave her the same look back, both thinking the same thing.

"I'm sure I wasn't half the lady killer you were," Mason said pointedly.

Echo leaned forward. "He was until he met me." She said it because she knew Damon knew that he would be punished if he hurt an innocent.

Mason looked her up and down. "Aren't you a little young for Damon?"

Echo shrugged and said, "I like older guys."

Mason chuckled at that, and asked, "How about a toast?" He raised his beer bottle into the air. "To new friends."

Echo leaned back and sipped from her coffee, giving Alaric a look, and he shared the same one.

ECHO took the back seat while Elena sat in the front with Caroline. "Thanks for this, I appreciate it," Elena said.

"Here we come, to the rescue." Caroline was acting weird, not being herself, and Echo could tell.

"Why are you being so snippy?" Echo asked, frowning at the blonde.

"That's my own drama. I'm sure you two will beat the odds. Not that there is any study to pull out from. What is the ratio success vampire-human coupling? I'm guessing no."

"Okay Caroline," Elena said.

"Sorry."

Suddenly, the tire blew out and Caroline pulled over.

"What the hell?" Echo muttered, unbuckling.

The girls got out of the car and Caroline checked the tires. "Great."

AFTER Caroline practically trying to keep them from going to find Stefan, the twins were suspicious and kinda angry, because they had waited for a two truck for hours, and they were exhausted.

They had left Caroline with the tow truck, and went to the Salvatore house on their own.

They walked in the house, and Echo stopped dead in her tracks. She could feel the hair raise on her arms, and her heartbeat rising.

Stood in front of them was Elena's doppelgänger, Katherine Pierce.

Echo quickly pushed Elena behind her and placed her heated glare at Katherine.

Elena couldn't speak. She couldn't breathe. It was like she was frozen. She couldn't move, blink, talk. She could only stand there. Looking like a crazy person. Although, it's not everyday someone gets to see their identical twin doppelganger.

"You must be Elena and Echo " The brunette spoke, causing Elena's jaw to drop. She knew they looked alike, it was strange and creepy seeing someone who looked like her when it wasn't her actual sister. It scared her.

"Obviously," Echo snapped, making sure to keep a hold on Elena. Upon seeing how Elena looked, she wanted to make sure her sister wouldn't pass out.

"How is this possible? How do we look exactly alike?" Elena whispered in a shaky voice.

Katherine didn't answer, she only stared at the girls. She walked around them and stalked them like they were her pray. She went to walk towards Elena when Echo let out a growl, and pushed Elena further away from the vampire.

"You touch her, you die," Echo spat, her grip harsh on Elena, but all she could think about was Katherine.

Katherine raised an amused eyebrow. "Huh," she hummed, turning her attention back on Elena. "You're asking the wrong question." Her eyes then darted back to Echo, checking her out.

"Elena?!" Stefan's voice sounded in the living room.

The other brunette disappeared, leaving both twins in shock. Elena rushed to her boyfriend to embrace him in a hug. Echo let out a breath, but was still tense.

"Are you guys okay?" He asked concerned.

"Not really. Are you okay?" Elena asked, pulling away from the hug when she realized Stefan was hurt.

"Not really."

LATER that night, Echo was in her room, every possible lead, every possible legend, and anything else she could find out about Dopplegangers, but everything they said, she already knew.

She grew angry, and a rush of emotions hit her dead on, and she started to rip the papers into many pieces, and she screamed, she shouted, she trashed her room.

No one was home, so no one heard her break down.

Her eyes that were full of fury landed on the Supernatural books that she had bought online, and she yanked them off of the shelf, and started ripping the pages out of them, one by one.

Every memory, every heartbreak, every death, every love story, every new family member, everything of her old life was soon ripped up all over her floor.

She grabbed her trashcan, and scrambled around her room, grabbing all the papers she possibly could, and threw them in the trash. She grabbed a match, and threw it in the trash can.

She watched with wild eyes as the fire grew big in the trashcan before becoming smaller.

She watched as her old life blow up in flames, almost quite literally, but it didn't help.

There was a pit in her stomach, something missing from her life. And all she wanted was her father and uncle to be there with her, warming their hands over the fire, making jokes, and just being a family.

But, the longer she stood there, the more she understood that was never going to happen again.
