Chapter 7: The Slammer

**Will ages like fine wine! (Just sayin'!)**

It was cold. It was so cold in the Slammer. I had no idea how long I sat there in the dark and cold. I stopped shivering a long time ago. It was deep inside of me. I could see my breath every time I exhaled. I had no tears to cry, they would have frozen to my face anyways.

I sat with my eyes wide open, staring glassy eyed at the opposite dirt packed wall. Nothing ran through my mind, except the blank cold and how much this place sucked. I lowered my head and placed my chin on my knees.

There was a soft tread on the ground outside. I jerked my head up. Every nerve suddenly awake. I blinked my eyes and shook my head quickly and scrambled to my feet as fast as my frozen joints would allow. Pressing my stuff back into the wall behind me. There was a sudden quick knock on the door.

"Hey! Green Bean?"

"Lil lady?"

I recognized those two voices. I instantly relaxed. A small smile formed in my lips.

"Guys? What are you doing here?"

I stumbled forwards towards the door and the barred window. I threw my hands up as a small torch of fire appeared. After so much time in the black darkness the blazing fire stung my eyes. Fred jammed the end of the torch into the ground.

"Jeepers! Girl, your lips are blue!" He yelped as he looked down at me.

"Don't worry. I'm finally as cold as my heart." I said between chattering teeth.

Frypan appeared in the small window beside Fred. His face filled with concern. I tried hard to keep my hands from shaking. But I could feel how stiff and cold everything was. My feet were numb, I couldn't feel them anymore.

"Here! We brought you some stuff. Newt is very concerned for you." Fred whispered.

He tried to shove a blanket through the tight bars. He gave up, and looked very upset.

"It's okay Fred. I'm fine!" I whispered. Trying to hide my chattering teeth.

Frypan then a hand through the bars, he was holding a mug of something. I could see the steam coming off the top. I reached both hands out to grab the mug but my hands were so stiff I almost dropped it.

I sat down again with the mug grasped tightly in my hands. I whimpered in releaf. But it was so hot on my hands it burnt. Fred and Frypan stood at the door watching me. I slowly looked up and gave them a tight lipped smile of graditude.

"Thank you." I chattered. "You guys should go. Alby might throw you in here, for aiding a fugitive. Or some stupid klunk."

Both boy's frowned.

"Go." I insisted. I didn't need the few friends I think I made getting into trouble because of me.

Frypan sighed and turned away. Fred reluctantly followed. The little bit of light that was there with the fire disappeared leaving me in the cold silent dark again. Stifling a small cry I gripped the mug even tighter, pulling my freezing shaking legs up, and huddled in the corner.

My eyes were getting heavy. My thoughts were sluggish and I couldn't stop shaking and shivering. My teeth where chattering so much I'm surprised no one woke up because of them. I don't think I could stand up even if I wanted to. My heart felt like it was trying to work over time trying to pump blood through my body. My eyelids were heavy. I finally lost the battle and they slid shut. I don't remember anything else.

Gally woke up early and had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. He groaned as he stretched in his bed. He sat up throwing the blankets aside he yawned. He winced when he stretched his lip.

He gingerly touched it. It was swollen and scabbed now. That girl had a wicked right hook. As much as she infuriated him he had to admit, she had his attention. She was stubborn and fiesty. Considering she was thrown into this mess she handled herself quite well. He didn't see her break her stone exterior once. A few smirks, but he was impressed how stoic she held herself.

He still had no idea if Minho let her win it if she actually win last night. Either way...wonder how her night in the Slammer went. Maybe that would knock her down a few pegs. She was too cocky. He couldn't let her get away with klunk like that! Even if she was a girl! No special treatment! She was a Glader and needed to be treated as such.

He stood up and got dressed. He met Newt and Minho in the hall. They were huddled together talking but stopped when he came closer. Newt straightened, and frowned at him.

"We were going to go let Snips out. If that's alright with you." He snapped.

He spun around and stomped out of the Homestead, followed by Minho. Gally groaned and rolled his eyes. But he followed, curious about how she was doing. Would she be waiting for them angry or pleading? Would she flung herself into his arms and plead to never be kicked up again?

The three of them marched towards the Slammer.

"So...Gal, why did you send her to the Slammer on her first night?" Minho asked, raising an eyebrow at him.

"She's a Glader. Any other Glader would have had the same punishment."

Newt stopped walking and spun towards him, anger flashed in his eyes, but it was gone when he blinked. Replaced by a sad look of pity.

"Have you stopped to consider her point of view?" He asked quietly.

Gally frowned but didn't answer.

"A lone bloody girl. Shows up in this hell hole. Surrounded by 40 hormonal teenage boys. Do ya remember the things half those slint heads said to her an' she wasn't even out of the bloody box? And then you go and be all...Gally on her. Ya, I think I woulda' punched ya too!"

Gally stood frozen for a second, not really thinking what it would be like for her. He growled and pushed passed Newt and continued towards the Slammer. He needed to get her out. He felt slightly guilty now for locking her up. But how can he let her behaviour slid if the rules were supposed to be for everyone?

He got there ahead of Newt and Minho. He banged on the door.

"Hey! You awake in there?"

There was no answer. Newt peered inside.

"I don't see her! No one let her out!"

Gally unlocked the rusty lock and threw the door open. He was expecting her to be standing with her arms crossed and her stone face, crystal blue eyes narrowed and rosy pink lips pursed in disapproval. Instead he saw nothing but darkness. He frowned.

Gally jumped down into the pit. He couldn't stand to his full hight. He peered into the dark gloom and saw a small form huddled in the corner. He huffed and rolled his eyes. She was sleeping.

"Come on girl. Time to get up. No time for slackers."

She didn't move. And he pursed his lips. He took another step towards her.

"Hey! Greenie!" He called.

"Gally? What's going on?" Newt asked. Gally could hear the sharpness in his voice. Minho jumped into the pit and came to stand beside him.

"She's a heavy sleeper." Minho muttered.

Minho stepped closer and crouched down to shake her.

"Shuck! She's freezing!" He gasped. He pulled his hand away and placed it on her cheek.

Minho swiveled around to face Newt and Gally. A worried expression on his face. Gally dropped down beside him.

She had her eyes closed, her long lashes tickled her cheek. Her normally rosy pink lips were blue. And she looked pale. She looked white as a ghost. With his heart racing, he slowly reached a hand out and gingerly touched her cheek. She was as cold as ice and didn't even twitch when he touched her.

With a spike of fear going through him, Gally shook her shoulder. All that accomplished was her head to flop. Her breathing was shallow.

He knew right away he shucked up. She wasn't just asleep. He scooped her up and lifted her to his chest. Gally got to his feet and in a few long strides was out the Slammer door. Minho and Newt followed behind him, he could feel their anger, and their glaring in his back, but his only goal right now was to get her to Jeff and Clint.

He kicked the MedHut door open, yelling for Jeff or Clint. Both boy's came running from the other room. They froze when they saw the new girl cradled in Gally's arms white as a ghost and lips blue.

"The shuck happened last night?" Jeff demanded.

Gally hung his head. He felt horrible. Guilt crashed over him in waves.

"This slint head threw her in the slammer because she decked him and his shucken ego couldn't take it!" Minho answered for him. He could hear the disgust in his voice as he spoke. It made Gally feel worse. He ground his teeth.

"Just...help her." Gally muttered.

Gally lay her down on the nearest bed. Jeff and Clint jumped into action. Minho muttered something to Newt who nodded. Minho gave Gally one last scathing look and left. Newt leaned on the wall, his eyes watching everything the MedJacks were doing.

Gally sheepishly went to stand beside him, watching anxiously as Jeff and Clint worked.

"So. Why did you do it?" Newt asked, not taking his eyes off the girl.

"Any other Glader would have gotten the same punishment. I can't...if she's going to fit in here she needs to learn she's not the exception to the rules!" Gally answered , shoving his hands into his pockets.

Newt hummed, he crossed his arms over his chest and crossed his ankles.

"That's true. However. Maybe showing people grace and mercy a little understanding goes a long way." Newt said quietly.

Gally chewed his bottom lip. Newt always had a way of making him feel like he was being scolded by a parent. Gally felt the weight of guilt again. Newt was right, but it was hard for him to let that go! The rules were the only think that made sense in this place. Rules and order made sense to him, it kept him sane after he went through the changing last month.

He still woke to nightmares, a month and a half later. Nothing made sense here! Rules and order, the methodical way the Glad ran, that made sense and it helped ease his anxiety and panic.

"Try to understand her situation Gally. I know deep down ya ain't a bloody jerk. But sometimes...you can come across as a bully. Just...slim it okay?"

Newt pushed off the wall and patted Gally's shoulders. He went to talk to Jeff quick, and then headed out the door. Gally went and slid into the chair beside her bed and placed his head in his hands.

Jeff clapped him on the shoulder.

"She'll be fine man. A little bit of hypothermia. But she'll be fine. We gotta slowly get her body temperature back up, but she'll be just fine."

Gally nodded in understanding. Jeff placed a hot water bottle under the blankets and left the room. Gally sat back in the chair and watched her.

There was something about her that drew him in. His eyes were constantly finding her in the crowd. Watching her fight yesterday made his heart beat faster. He didn't know what it was, maybe it was just that she was the first girl he remembered.

Well that wasn't entirely true. When he was going through the changing, there was a girl in his memories. But he had no details about her. He could hear a giggle. A garbled voice saying his name. He saw her hand reaching for him as he was pulled away from her. He could remember a soft hug and if he closed his eyes and thought really hard, he almost could smell a cinnamon vanilla from her.

He sat in the rickity wood chair at the bed of a girl he didn't know and waited for her to wake up. He intended on appolagiaing as soon as she was awake. He placed his head in his hands, his elbows on his knees and anxiously waiting for her to open her bright crystal blue eyes.
