Chapter 43: The Fight

I sat beside Minho at the Fire, while Gally did his thing with his drinks. I sat huddled with the Runners. We were all quiet. We all felt the horrible loss of Jax and Ben.

I had a jar of Gally's drink in my hand. I took a few small sips, but I just couldn't. Minho and I sat shoulder to shoulder, staring into the fire. I caught a bit of Newt and Chuck's conversation with the Greenie.

His questions were oddly similar to mine, and it made me follow him with my eyes. I watched as Newt explained, very similarly the workings of the maze. Chuck got up for some food. I kept an eye on Newt and the Greenie.

"...were stuck here aren't we."

"For the moment." I saw Newt twist around and point to us. "You see those guys? There, by the fire? Those are the runners. That guy in the middle there, that's Minho. He's the Keeper of the Runners. And the girl? Our onl' girl, she's his second. Every morning, when those doors open, they run the maze...mapping it, memorizing it, trying to find a way out."

"She's the only girl?"

"Yep." Newt popped the p.

"Why?"

I saw Newt shrug and turn back to lean on the log. "She's been here almost a year. No idea why she's the only bloody shuck girl."

The Greenie was quiet, I could feel his eyes on me. But I just started into the fire. Keeping my ears open, straining to hear more.

"She has a thing with that jerk Gally guy."

I turned my head ever so slightly.

"She does."

"Why? He's an asshole."

"Greenie. You've been here a few hours. There's a lot going on you don't know."

"Then tell me! Tell me what's going on, Newt."

I saw Newt sag, I saw his shoulders drop.

"No. It's not my place. And don't you be poking around." He said sharply.

Even from behind I saw the tension in his body, I could almost feel the tension from him. It was like I could feel his frustration. No one was giving him answers and each answered question brought up more questions.

I went back to staring blankly into the fire for a while. Laying my head on Minho's shoulder. He lay his head on top of mine and we just sat, feeling the weight of Jax's loose. Minho had gone out alone to try find any sign of him, anything we could bury. Only thing he found was the blood stains.

I glanced at Newt and the Greenie again.  I nudged Minho, breaking him out of his stooper and nodded in their direction.

Newt had either consciously or not scootched closer. They were sitting across the fire, leaning on a log, facing away from the group.

Minho and I watched as they looked at each other, talking, slowly leaning in. Minho glanced at me and we both let our lips twitch into a small smile. The Greenie pulled away at the last minute, and took a sip of the jar. Spitting it out everywhere.

Minho and I both sagged.

"So close." Minho sighed.

I shook my head. Watching again as Newt got up and pulled the Greenie to his feet and steered him through the crowd.

Gally was done at the drink table and came over, pulling me from the runners. He wrapped his arm around my back and pulled me over to the sand pit.

"Come watch."

He had to tell in my ear. I just nodded. He sat down and pulled me into his lap, wrapping his arms around me. His chin on my shoulder we watched the two guys in the ring.

"Tell me how you'd beat him."

I watched a few more moments and then turned my head to talk to him.

"His left is weaker than his right. Step inside and take him out."

Gally asked me each time, maybe he was trying to keep my mind busy. And I was greatful. My heart swelled, and I had a warm fuzzy feeling.

"I think it's my turn!" Gally called.

I smiled up at him as he stood up, and pulled his shirt off.

"Lookin good babe."

He winked and sauntered into the ring. I watched him wrestle a few guys. I wish I was feeling up to wrestling, it was a good stress relaver. But no shucken way. Not even a little tonight. I was actually feeling quite exhausted and just about ready to call it. But Newt and the Greenie caught my eye again. They were walking towards me. Newt had his arm around the Greenie, point out different people. The Greenie had caught my watching. And we both froze.

Gally had Jim in a head lock in the sand pit. Somehow, Jim managed to wiggle out, but stumbled into Newt and the Greenie. Breaking our eye contact.

Gally was breathing hard and I saw him look between me and the Greenie and back, his eyes narrowed.

"What do you say, Greenie? Wanna see what you're made of?" Gally called, crossing his large arms over his sweaty chest.

"Greenie! Greenie! Greenie!" The crowd cheered.

I kept my mouth shut, but I watched intently. The Greenie's eyes flicked to me. I felt something weird in my stomach again, and something itching at the back of my brain.

Gally's eyes flicked between me and the Greenie again. I could see his anger flare.

"Rules are simple." He sneered. "I try to push you out of the circle... you try to last more than five seconds."

"Gally, take it easy on the Greenie." I smirked.

Inside I was actually worried about the kid. When Gally was mad he could get a little carried away, knowing he would never hurt me, but other shanks, that was a whole other ball game. Especially when he got jealous and protective. And especially today, we were both still reeling and trying to process the loose of baby bean.

The Greenie stepped forwards and Gally charged. The kid went flying, landing on his stomach.

"Get up boy!" Gally taunted, "Come on Greenie. We ain't done yet!"

The kid picked himself up and turned around.

"Stop calling me Greenie." He said defiantly, his eyes narrowed at Gally who was standing with his hands on his hips. If he wasn't being such an aragont slint head, it would have been hot. I mean he still is hot, but the attitude wasn't.

"Stop calling you that? What do you wanna be called? Shank?" He asked, raising his eyebrows. He looked at me.

"What do you think? Does he look like a Shank?"

The Greenie charged Gally without warning, and would have taken him down, but Gally was strong and very stable, and surprisingly agile. He side stepped the attempt and the kid face planted again.

"You know what? I think I've settled on Shank." Gally taunted him some more.

Gally charged, but this time the Greenie was ready and dodged under his arm and he somehow managed to trip Gally and landed on his hands and knees, at my feet.

"Not bad for a Greenie!" He spat.

I raised an eyebrow at Gally as he got up. I let a small smirk lift the sides of my lip. Greenie had guts. And he was a fast learner, taking Gally down a peg.

"You're gonna let a Greenie beat you babe?" I asked.

Gally stood up with a growl. He spun around and took hold of the kid and slammed him down into the sand. I heard his head slam into the ground. I gasped and jumped up. Gally was breathing heavily, his shoulders tense and his hands in fists. He was taking menacing steps forwards.

The Greenie hadn't moved. I jumped in-between and shoved Gally in the chest, pushing him away before he could hurt the new kid again.

I knelt down beside him.

"Hey you okay Greenie?" I asked.

The kid whispered something. I felt a tickle in my mind. I blinked and shook my head.

"What?" I whispered.

He said it again, but I couldn't hear him again. But again I felt something in the pit of my stomach and the tickle felt more like a sharp stab.

He said it a third time, at the same time I whispered a name.

His eyes went wide and we both stared wided eyed at eachother.

"Thomas." We said together.

I feel backwards and scrambled backwards. My eyes wide.

He sat up.

"I remember my name!" He called, "Thomas! My name is Thomas!"

Tommy

Charlie

I scrambled to my feet and ran. Shoving my way through the guys. I had to get away. I needed to be away for the Greenie.

"Charlie!"

I heard Gally calling me back, but I kept going. Running away from the fire and chaos. I made it back to our bedroom. I grabbed the pain meds off the dresser, took some and stripped off my clothes and crawled into bed. Curling up, wrapping my arms around my empty tummy and curling into a tight ball.

A few minutes later I heard Gally.

"Charlie?"

The door opened and closed. He sat down heavily on the bed.

"What the shuck is going on?"

"I don't...I don't know Gally! I really don't!"

"I don't believe it! You two have been staring at each other all day."

"I don't find him attractive in anyway, if that's what your getting at." I snapped. I still had my back to him, curdled up, staring at the wall.

I heard him growl.

"Then what?"

"I don't know! I have a weird... feeling and like something in my head."

"Like you remember him?" He seemed eager.

"I don't know..."

We were quiet.

"Why? Do you know something?"

I finally rolled over and looked up at him. Gally was leaning forward, his elbows on his knees. His head was hanging down. And he shook it.

"I don't believe it." I repeated his words.

I slowly sat up, placing my hand on his bare back.

"You remember him... don't you?" I asked quiet.

Gally never really told me much about what he remembered from the Changing. A few things about us before the maze, and a few other little things. But he never talked about what he saw.

His silence was my answer.

"What do you remember about him?"

Gally shrugged. He sighed and ran a large hand through his hair.

"Not much."

He turned towards me, forcing a smile.

"How are you feeling?"

I sighed and shrugged. He got up onto a knee and wrapped me in one arm around my back and slowly lowered us down, his other hand bracing himself. He was careful not to lay on my stomach. He gently kissed my forehead.

"Dude you smell." I whined.

"Smell like Man, you mean!" He grinned.

"Eww! No. Like shank!" I pushed on his chest.

He chuckled and sat up.

"Fine. I'll shower. You wait here." He kissed me quick and left.

I curled up, my mind spinning. Gally remembered this new kid...I knew his name...

But what freaked me out, was I was possitive I heard his voice in my head. Was he the voice in my head? How was that even shucken possible? Why him?

Nothing made sense and I groaned. Hiding my head under the blankets. Some klunk had happened recently. The voices in my head were right; things were changing.

Gally came back from the shower clean and smelling a whole lot better. He crawled into bed with me and pulled me close. I wrapped my leg over his hip snuggling my chest into his. His arms around me, my face pressed into his neck I finally took a deep shuddering breath and slowly let it out.

"You okay?"

"Just...missed you."

He hummed.

"I feel safe now. Comfortable...I couldn't do this without you, Gally." I said quietly. I wasn't one for sentimental talk, but...he needed to hear this. I needed to say it.

He pulled away and with my chin between his thumb and finger tilted my head to look up at him.

"You Charlie are my home. Wherever you are...I'm home."

He leaned down and brushed his lips against mine. My eyes fluttered closed. His hand gently cupped my cheek, this thumb brushing my cheek bone. My hand ran up his neck into his hair. I pulled him closer and kissed him again. His lips were warm and soft. I pulled away just enough to whisper against them.

"I love you Gally."

"I love you too Charlie."

Pulling me back to kiss me gently before he pulled away and pulled my head to his chest, and I feel asleep, feeling safe.
