Chapter 20: I Walked into that One

The first thing that I noticed right away was the smell. It was awful, it was stale and dusty, but also had a weird rusty metal smell. Stepping into the room it made me cough a few times, which made me wince.

"You get used to it, there isn't much circulation in here... and mixed with runners who have run all day in the sun.." Ben said with an amused look, watching me.

"Hmmm. Gross." I said dryly, wrinkling my nose.

"Ahh, you'll be part of the problem shortly , Tiger!" Minho chuckled at my face.

Minho walked further into the room and pulled a cord, turning on a bare lightbulb hanging in the middle of the room. I blinked from the sudden burst of light, once my eyes adjusted I looked around this once forbidding room. There wasn't much. A big scruffy wood table in the middle, it was littered with paper and pencils, a few papers were pined or tapped to the walls. I stepped closer to the walls. I realized almost right away they were drawings of the maze. they were very intricate and detailed.

"So. This is it." Ben swept his arm wide.

I slowly walked around the perimeter of the room, looking at the drawings.

"So you have two runners per door, and they memorize what they can and write it down as soon as they get back?"

"Yep." Minho popped the P.

"And your still exploring?"

"Yep." He popped the p again, hooking his thumbs in his runners vest.

"Have you guys brought note books and pencil into the Maze?"

It was quiet, and I turned from the map I was looking at to see the boys looking dumbstruck.

"The shuck?! Why didn't I think of this?" Minho whispered to himself.

I shook my head in amusement, "Because your head is too full of hair gel, and you're just not thinking."

"Well I walked into that one." He muttered.

"It would help you remember what you ran, and map later, and that way we can check notes too see if anything is different. 'Cause the walls change, ya?"

Ben nodded. Then folded his long arms over his lean chest, and he gave me a smug look, "I told you, Charlie you would be a good assets."

I just rolled my eyes, and turned back to the maps pinned to the wall. I frowned and cocked my head.

"What else is on your mind Tiger? Lay it on me!" Minho said coming to stand beside me. Ben followed and stood beside me on the other side.

"Well...I was just thinking...with all these maps everywhere...how do you keep it all straight? It looks so complicated."

Both boys hummed and shrugged. Minho turned around towards the table, I turned and watched him. He shuffled papers around trying to find something.

"Ahh! There is is. Come here Tiger."

I came over and leaned my elbows on the table. Minho had grabbed a pencil and blank paper.

"Okay, this is what we know so far..."

He went on to explain the sections and areas they have explored, and how it works so far, how the walls move, but only in select areas, not every wall changes. I frowned as I watched Minho draw the map, explaining. He finished and presented the page to me. I studied it, looking carefully at everything. There was something at the back of my mind, it was like an itch I couldn't reach.

"What's with the face? I can almost see the wheels turning!" Ben asked, poking my cheek.

I swatted his hand away with an eye roll. He tried poking me again, but I smacked it away. He just chuckled.

"I don't know. Its something, but I don't know. There is something were missing." I looked to Minho, "do you mind if I take this and study it?"

What I was secretly hoping, as weird as it was, that the voice in my head would say something. But I had no idea how it worked or why, or who...but it seemed to know me, and I had a weird feeling like I knew them too, it was comforting and familiar. But there was something intriguing about this whole maze thing.

"Sure. Just keep it safe."

I nodded.

"Well, there isn't much else to show you tonight, it's overwhelming. So tomorrow we will start going into detail of each section we know and have you try memorize what you can."

I nodded again, still looking at the paper, following the guys out. They waved good bye and headed to the showers, I slowly made my way back to the Homestead, my eyes glued to the paper. I was so busy, I wasn't watching where my feet went and I bumped into something and fell backwards. Landing with a yelp of pain as my ribs exploded with fire.

I clamped my eyes shut, the tears sprung up so fast. I lay on my back gasping trying to breath through the pain.

"Shuck it Charlie!"

Gally sounded exasperated. Great. I had walked into him, of course it had to be him. I lay on the ground still, holding my side. I heard some rustling and knew he had crouched down beside me, I could feel his warmth and presence. Out of no where my stomach felt like it just jumped off the tree house. The shuck?

"Watch where your going! Your never going to heal those ribs if you keep walking into people and falling." He scolded.

"Never thought of that. Thanks for the tip." I hissed through gritted teeth.

The fire had subsided into a throb. I lifted my hands from my ribs and placed the heels of my hands over my eyes pushing slightly, and wiped the moisture away, taking a slow inhale. I lowered my hands and opened my eyes. Gally was leaning over me slightly, his intense blue eyes looked...calmer and softer then at supper. My breathing stopped, stuck in my chest. I felt my heart speed up, thumping hard against my ribs, making the ache worse. I lay frozen, staring into his eyes. We must have stayed like that for at lest a minute. The setting sun reflecting off his blond waves, the sun made it look slightly red. They looked freshly washed, making the waves almost curly. I also noticed how tanned he was, bringing out some freckles. I saw him clench his jaw and noticed how strong and defined it was.

The shuck is wrong with me? I felt warm, and I could feel the heat rising in my face.

"I'm...I'm going..to sit up now..." I squeaked.

Without saying anything, he slipped a hand under my back and took some of my weight helping me sit up. I hissed again, holding my side. His eyes flickered from my face to my side and frowned, and he looked...worried? The corners of his mouth pulled down.

Third Person

Gally had noticed the last few days Charlie had been hanging out with Minho and Ben, she had even stopped sitting at the Keepers table. Ever since the morning she let him have it. She didn't hold back. He knew she was right about what she said, but it didn't make it any easier. He still got mad when he thought of her making light of the Grievers. However he couldn't put himself in her positions, especially after the klunk at the MedHut the other day. Gally knew she was being harassed, but didn't realize the extent of it, and he felt horrible. He thought that by giving her the job of chopping wood she would understand he was trying to help her.

But he shucked up. Especially when she fell and he panicked and did nothing. He just froze. Seeing her laying on the ground... Gally just froze, his brain just shut off. By the time it was working again it was too late and he was being scolded by Newt, Alby, Jeff and Minho. Shuck, he was screwing everything up. The more he tried to treat her like every other Glader, the more he seemed to push her away. The two weeks she was on bed rest were not fun. He felt awful, he noticed her absence. He finally worked up the courage to see her and his anger and mouth shucked it up. Something always triggered his anger and then his mouth ran amuck.

Why would he be made at her for having Gladers care about her, not like she can have female friends! It still made him feel hot and angry and sad and frustrated that others could have such an easy going relationship with her. What was wrong with him? Why couldn't he just laugh and joke with her? Instead they argued and fought, and glared at each other.

When Gally saw her sitting with the Runners again, laughing at something that someone said, he felt the anger and sadness leap to the surface. She looked up, before he could look away she caught him watching. Her bright blue eyes still sparkling from laughing. She had let her hair down, and it tumbled around her shoulders in loose curls. Her smile slipped and her eyes flickered to confused and the corners of her delicate mouth pulled down. He felt stuck, her eyes were a magnate that kept him stuck in place. The noise of the cafeteria died away. He watched as her face turned slightly pink. When she bit her bottom lip slightly, Gally's heart almost stopped. Her eyes widen in surprise. He panicked thinking she knew what he was feeling. Gally saw her gasp and throw a hand to her head. He watched as Minho leaned over to her and whisper something. She shook her head and gave him a smile. A minute later she followed Minho and Ben out of the dining area.

He felt weird, almost empty. Longing to laugh with her. He watched her go. She glanced once at him as they passed the table, but her emotions were masked by her usual indifferent look. She looked away and kept walking, the guys sandwiched her and threw their arms over her shoulders and he could hear her laugh. It gave him goosebumps.

"Ya know, you can just talk to her." Newt had leaned across the table.

Gally snapped his eyes to Newt. He had a knowing look on his face.

"I shucked up to much." Gally muttered, looking back at his plate.

"She's pretty forgiving."

Gally just growled, pushing his food around his pate. He shoved some more food into his mouth.

"Have you talked to her lately?"

Gally shook his head. Newt sighed.

"Look man. I know whatever you guys have is complicated, I don't even know what to call it. What I do bloody know is she would love to have a regular ol' conversation with you, without the glaring an' yelling."

Gally scoffed.

"She just makes...me so angry!" Gally threw down his fork in frustration.

"Hmmm, not that one day. I heard you both laughing. Gally, you were bloody laughing! An' I haven't heard that since your bloody...accident. If she can make you feel that angry...imagen how happy she could make you! Ya just need a grip on that anger, shank."

"She seems just fine with her new friends." Gally indicated to where Charlie had walked off with Minho and Ben, and waved his hand to the Runners table.

Newt hummed, and gave him a small smile. "That's 'cause they talk to her and are happy to have her around. You should try it." He stood up, "Trust me my friend." Newt patted Gally's shoulder and walked away.

Gally huffed, finished his supper; the pasta sauce was really good tonight, it was full of flavor, thick and filling. He stormed over to the showers. He took his time, trying to sort out his feelings, but they were so mixed and complicated. He just felt a headache forming. Sighing he turned the water off and slowly headed towards the Homestead. He was so in his own thoughts, and watching the stars he didn't see the person, until they walked into them.

He heard a shriek and a thud. He blinked and looked down.

"Shuck it Charlie!" He groaned.

She hadn't gotten up, she was panting and holding her ribs. Guilt washed over him in cold buckets of ice. He crouched down beside her. He watched her for a second, his stomach did something weird and his heart sped up. He watched her struggling, trying to catch her breath.

"Watch where your going! Your never going to heal those ribs if you keep walking into people and falling." He scolded.

"Never thought of that. Thanks for the tip." she hissed through gritted teeth, he saw a single tear slid down her temple into her hair.

He had an urge to wipe it away, but kept his hands to himself. He smirked a little at her snappy remark, even in pain she was feisty.

She rubbed her eyes with her hands and slowly blinked her eyes open. Gally knew he was in trouble, her eyes were locked onto him. He heard a small intake of breath, where as his stopped all together. The seating sun made her skin look golden and her hair look like liquid honey. Her eyes were captivating. The crystal blue, light ice blue and a deep navy, they were beautiful. He could look into her eyes all day and not be bored. He tried to swallow, but his mouth was dry. They just stayed still, they didn't move, lost in each others gaze.

"I'm...I'm going..to sit up now..." she squeaked.

Gally helped her sit up, shuck she was light, but he could feel all the muscle she had.

She leaned on her hands, and Gally sat back, drapping his arms on his knees, clasping them together.

"So? What were you looking at so intently?" He asked, glancing back and forth between the grass and her face, still glowing in the sun.

"Something Minho asked me to help with." She shrugged.

"Oh."

"You?"

"Nothing." Gally said quickly.

"Okay." she looked away.

It was an awkward silence for a moment.

"I guess Alby gave you a job without the gathering, hey?" He tried bring up something that was safe ground.

She looked at him sharply, narrowing her eyes. She slowly relaxed and nodded.

"I'm in the Kitchen with Fry, nothing crazy until these stupid ribs heal."

Gally sighed and ran a hand through his damp hair, he knew he had to get the words out, as much as he hated apologizing, but he knew he shucked up and had to fix it.

"Charlie...I really am sorry." He glanced nervously at her, she didn't say anything, she was beautiful, sitting in the sunset, her wavy hair slightly disheveled, bright blue eyes, long dark eyelashes, full pink lips and a natural flush on her cheeks. She was watching him intently.

"I...uh shuck...whatever...I gave you the wood job because you had said you didn't like being around people, and I was impressed with how you took the time to sharpen the ax first. That took brains. But then the roof thing happened. I'm sorry I didn't get you to come help the shower crew, I just figured the MedHut roof was almost done, there would be no issues. I was wrong."

She sat straighter, her eyes were intense, watching him, her mouth pressed into a tight line. He couldn't read her, but she wasn't yelling or snapping, so he took another breath. He pulled a dandelion from the group and played with it. giving his nervous energy something to focus on.

"I froze. My brain just stopped working. I'm really really sorry Charlie!" He said quietly and hung his head, "I know it doesn't make up for what I didn't do, but..I really am sorry and whatever..."

"You gave me a solo job because I said the day before I wasn't a fan of crowds? You remembered that?" She asked, her eyes going wide.

Gally looked up, kind of shocked that's what she got out of that. He frowned, his forehead creased as his eyebrows met. He nodded.

"It was a solo job. It let me test your stamina, strength, could you get the job done without a manager...also it was in the open and I could see if anyone was being a jackass."

"Why didn't you just tell me that?" She asked.

Gally opened his mouth to answer, but closed it when he didn't have one, and shrugged. A small smile formed on her mouth and shook her head.

"So, what about the whole throwing fists?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

He sighed, exasperated. "I was a hot head-"

She snorted, and rolled her eyes. He let a small smile show on his face.

"Fine. I'm still a hot head. BUT. The first few months I was here that's what I did, throwing fists and klunk. But had to stop, it wasn't helping and we slowly formed order and a system and klunk. But...your situation is different, I guess. If you did throw a few fists here and there maybe they would back the shuck off."

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair again, and then down his face. She smirked at him. He raised an eyebrow.

"Alby may or may not have said the same thing this afternoon. But we never had that conversation." She gave him a devious smile.

He chuckled.

"What conversation?" He asked.

"Exactly!" She grinned.

He chuckled.

"I like your smile Gally."

His smile slipped when he looked down at her. He didn't realize how close they were actually siting, and his heart rate picked up again. It threw his brain into a fuzzy kind of panic. He felt his hand move, but not really know what to do, or how to stop it. It was almost like an out of body experience. He slowly and gently brushed a wave out of her face and tucked it behind her ear. She didn't move, her eyes locked onto his. He didn't want to move his hand, she was so warm and soft. His hand slowly and ever so gently rand down to her jaw.

His eyes widened when she lifted a hand and placed it over his, flattening his hand against her cheek. They both were frozen, her hand over top of his, which now cupped her check. He slowly brushed his thumb against her cheekbone. His heart was wild. Again without his brain fully functioning, he slowly leaned closer. He wasn't sure what he was doing, but she didn't move away. Maybe it was his imagination, but she may have leaned forwards a bit. Gally took a chance and leaned closer.

She ripped her face away, and gasped. Hissing, her hands flew to her side, her eyes clamped shut. Her breathing came in short gasps.

"Shucken ribs!" she hissed.

Gally blinked a few times, shaking his head clear from the weird fog.

"You need to lay down and ice those ribs."

"Good idea." She grabbed a piece of paper off the ground, without another word Gally got swiftly to his feet. He bent down and picked her up, he was surprisingly gentle, carful not to hurt her more, and carried her to her room.

Gally smiled when he felt her relax and lay her head on his chest.
