Chapter 2: I Won't Cry

I was stuck in a metal cage with gawking boys above me.

What the hell kind of situation did I get myself into?

I kept a weary eye on the boy in front of me. I was thankful he kept his distance. My heart was pounding so hard my ribs hurt. I tried to hid my short shallow breathing by biting my lip. My hands open and closed into fists. My back was pressed into the cold metal cage wall.

"So, right. My name. My name is Newt." The boy said.

I didn't say anything. I had no idea what to say, I couldn't remember anything..

"Why can't I remember my name?" My voice came out dry, and quieter than I was hoping.

The boy's eyes lost their curiosity and became sad. He looked away, at a spot on the floor, and took a deep breath and let it out in a sigh.

"It's normal. No one can remember their bloody name when they first come up. It'll come back in time...it's the only bloody thing they let us keep." Newt said sadly.

I just nodded. This made no sense. None of this made sense, the cage, the gawking boys, the memory loss. Nothing was right, this has to be some weird nightmare I'm still stuck in.

"NEWT!" The deep voice yelled down. "Is the girl coming up?"

Newt looked back at me, raising his eyebrow at me.

"Wanna get out of the shuck box? No one likes it down here. Smells better out there."

He held out a hand for me to take, I didn't move. My hands still in fists I stayed flat against the cage wall.  He sighed, and looked back up at the crowd of boys.

"Gally! Throw down the rope!" He called up, "Shebean is stubborn." He muttered.

"I heard that." I growled.

He doesn't know me! heck, I don't even know me! But..that seems accurate.

Newt chuckled to himself. A rope that looked more like a vine was dropped into the box.

"Here ya go. I wont touch ya, they can pull ya up." Newt said as he backed away a few steps, giving me room.

I gave him a sharp look and a sharp node. I stepped slowly towards the vine. I glanced up before grabbing on. All the guys were staring down wide eyed, mouths open. I swear a few had drool coming out of their mouths. I wrinkled my nose in disgust.

"Hold on, girl." Another deep voice yelled down. It sent a weird shiver down my spin.

"I have a name!"

"Oh ya? What's that?" He yelled back.

I opened and closed my mouth a few times. Then frowned and wrinkled my forehead. I really couldn't remember what my own name was! I felt a sharp pain again, but nothing came forward, no name no letter, nothing. my mind was blank.

"I thought not." He snickered with a roll of his eyes.

"Yeah..well at least I don't have stupid eyebrows." I snarked, folding my arms, still staring up at him.

I heard a snort of laughter from behind me. I looked over my shoulder, Newt had a hand over his mouth, trying to hide his laughter. He was doing a poor job. I let my lip twitch into something resembling a smile.

"Are you coming up? Or should I close the door and leave you?" The boy snapped.

I rolled my eyes, and grabbed the vine, testing it. Stupid boys. I don't need them to pull me, I'm not breakable, and I'm not weak! I decided to ignore the rope and the boys. I jumped and grabbed the side of the cage, and pulled myself up, I could feel the burning and straining in my muscles. But Now that I was this far into my stupid decision, I couldn't back out now. I pulled myself up. As soon as my head cleared the surface, all kinds of hands grabbed onto me and yanked me up. I felt my feet hit the ground. My knees gave out and I hit the ground. I heard a few snickers. More hands grabbed me, trying to pull me back up.

"LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE!" I screamed. It was reflex, hands were grabbing and touching everything. I was scared, lost, feeling sick, confused and now guys were touching me. I swung my fist into the nearest person.

"AHHH!" Someone screamed.

I reached my fist back again and swung, I heard a thumb. I was going to swing again, but I felt large hands clamp down on my biceps, and pulled me backwards. I bumped into something solid, and warm. I screamed.

"SLIM IT!" A deep voice cracked through the chaos. "ENOUGH!"

A tall dark skinned boy shoved through the crowd, followed quickly by Newt. Both boys had frowns, both looked angry. The hands that held me were clamped hard around my arms, and they didn't let go, no matter how hard I struggled.

"LET GO OF ME!" I screamed, desperately trying to throw this guy off.

"Gally, let her go. You're not helpin'" The dark skinned boy said.

The hands released me instantly and I fell to the ground, again. With a growl I scrambled to my feet, ready to start swinging again. My chest was rising and falling rapidly. My eyes flicked around, trying to figure out my surroundings. The boys had backed up, forming a tight circle. The two boys in front of me were looking at me with a weird expression.

The dark skinned boy spun in a slow circle, making eye contact with the guys. "No one touches the girl! Hands to your shucken self! I repeat, NO ONE TOUCHES THE GIRL! Or I will send you over the cliff!" He yelled.

Newt was glaring at the crowd, I could see his jaw tightening. It was weird how fast he went from looking calm and almost gentle to angry and mean. He turned and looked past me, I turned my head to see what he was glaring at.

"That includes you too, Gally." He said.

"I was just making sure she didn't flatten anyone else. Or did you forget our own shucken rules? Don't harm another Glader?" The ox of a boy snarled.

He was huge, reaching taller than 6 feet. He had wide strong shoulders, close cut dark blond hair and steel blue eyes. He was standing with his legs apart and arms folded, with a scowl on his face.

"If they keep their hands to themselves I'll keep mine to myself." I spat at him.

His steely eyes snapped to me, and then narrowed. I don't know if he was expecting me to crower and cry, but I straightened my back and glared right back. Sure he was taller and stronger than me, but he wasn't going to intimidate me.

"Enough! Gally! Enough! Go help the guys unload the boxes." The dark skinned boy said.

He glarred at me a little longer, I raised an eyebrow at him, challenging him. It seemed that the dark skinned boy was in charge. Was this ox boy going to defy a direct order?  I could hear him growl and then he huffed. I gave him a smirk he rolled his eyes as I turned back towards Newt and the other boy.

"Name is Alby. And welcome to the Glad."

"The what?" I asked.

He sighed like he was frustrated, "shuck Greenies and their stupid questions!" He muttered, running a hand down his face.

"Excuse me? The hell did you just say?" I asked, I surprised how calm I kept my voice. His eyes focused back on me. I kept my face as impassive as I could. Shoving all the fear and panic deep down, swallowing the bile that rose up. There would be time to panic later, right now I needed some answers!

"I said, welcome to the Glade!" He answered, folding his large gorilla arms across his chest.

"And where's that?"

"No where good." Alby growled.

"Oh well that's very helpful. Thank you for the very helpful answers!" I snapped. My frustration with this guy was rising.

There were a few snickers in the crowed.

"I still think she'll be a sloppet!"

"She's pretty snappy!"

"She's still a weak little klunk!"

"Slimm it shuck face!"

"ENOUGH!" Alby roared again.

As I looked around the crowed of boys my eyes slid passed them and I looked at my surroundings for the first time. My mouth dropped open and my eyes went wide.

The heck is going on? Where the hell am I?

In every direction were tall solid stone walls. I spun in a circle trying to see everything. We were surrounded by huge walls that went 100s of feet into the air!

I could feel my chest tightening and the bile riding in my throat. I could feel my body going hot to cold back to hot. I spun around again, whipping my head.

"Haha! Look at the girl!"

"Poor Shank is going to break her neck!"

"She's gonna panic!"

"She won't last a week!"

I clamped my mouth shut and my eyes shut, rubbing my temples trying to regain my control. I scolded myself.

I shouldn't have let them see me panic!

I let myself take three deep breaths and then straightened up, keeping my jaw clamped, I focused on the other things around me. Ignoring the stupid degrading comments from the boys. There was a sorry excuse of a building in one corner, a red barn in another corner. I turned the other way and there was a forest that took up a good chunk of this side, but the forest trees have way to bushes and plants...it was a garden I realized.

Still trying to process everything I heard Newt yelling, "Go back to work!" He shooed the gawking boys away. He stopped and glanced at the two guys on the ground.

"Hey! Clint, Jeff! Come here and get Zart and Jack. They need some... attending to." Newt called, a slight amused look on his face.

Two boys came jogging over and helped the two boys still laying in a daze on the ground.

Once the boys were picked up, arms slung over the other boys and limped away. The only guys left were Alby, and Newt. I glanced beside me and I could see the guy they called Gally and a few other huge guys lifting the boxes out of the horrible cage.

I shuddered, it was awful down there. I shook my head and looked back at Newt and Alby.

"Why can't I remember anything? How come I'm the only girl? And where the heck are we?" I demanded.

"It's a long story, Shank...Shanket?" Alby said. "Piece by piece, you'll learn. I'll be takin' you on the Tour tomorrow. Till then ... just don't break anything." He held a hand out. "Name's Alby, like I said before." He waited, clearly
wanting to shake hands.

Instead of shaking his hand I folded my arms, grinding my teeth, narrowing my eyes.

"That wasn't an answer." I snapped, "if it's a long story looks like we have time. Explain."

I heard a snort and out of the corner of my eye I saw the big blond guy snickering.

Why do they all think this is funny? I'm so lost and confused! Stupid boys! I hate it here already!

Alby ran a hand down his face again with a huge sigh. Newt clapped him on the shoulder with a small smile.

"Alby, your hurtin' more than helpin'."

Alby aggressively rubbed the top of his bald head, eyeing me. He finally groaned.

"Look girl...when I'm not around, he's in charge."

Newt smiled at the grumpy guy beside him. "Well, it's a good thing you're always around then, ya?" He clapped Alby on the shoulder.

I could stand here anymore, I was going to throw another fist. These guys clearly weren't going to help me, and felt like they were just making light of the awful nightmare I was thrown into. I spun on my heel and stormed away. I had no idea where I was going, but I needed to collect myself. I found myself walking towards the forest. Once I was in the tree line I flopped down to the ground, putting my elbows on my knees and my head in my hands. I kept my eyes clamped shut trying to slow my wild heart beat and my racing thoughts.

I refused to cry! It wasn't going to help anyone, it didn't do anything useful.

I heard feet before I saw them. I scrambled to my feet, my heart racing again. Hands in fists. To my shock there was a young boy walking towards me accompanied by Newt. This boy was the youngest kid I'd seen so far. He had bright red hair and his face was covered in freckles. He looked like he was full of mischief.

They slowed down when they got closer to me. I backed into the tree, leery of the boys.

"Hey, it's okay Shanket! This is Fred. He was the Greenie before you." Newt said.

Newt's voice was light and his chocolate brown eyes were gentle and calm. It eased my nerves a little. Well at least enough to loosen her fists.

Newt plunked down, and leaned back on his hands. Fred kept a curious eye on me and sat down beside Newt.

"Sit down girly. We ain't gonna bloody bite." Newt chuckled, patting the ground beside him.

I slid down the tree and wrapped my arms around my knees. My jaw still clamped shut and my eyes narrowed.

Newt kept a smile on his face. It seemed like he was a naturally calm guy. Fred I wasn't sure about. He looked like trouble.

"So. Shanket. I can answer a few questions. Shoot." Newt smiled at me.

I took a shaking breath and ran my hand through my hair. Only realizing now I didn't know what I looked like.

"What do I look like?" I blurted before I could think.

The boys eyes went wide for a split second and then they both chuckled.

"You got blondish hair. And blue eyes." Fred said, his voice cracked and he cleared his throat with a blush on his face.

His voice still had the kid-likeness to it, cracking from deep to young kid. He looked like he was 14 or 15. Newt nodded and looked me up and down quickly.

"Hmm. Yeah, it's like a carmly blond. And your blue eyes are like a crystal blue, light and dark mixed together. You have natural rosy cheeks and lips. Quite pretty." He said cocking his head.

The weird thing was I didn't feel like he was hitting on me. It was a statement. I nodded my head once, in thank you.

His eyes twinkled, and he smiled at me.

"Now. Any other questions?"

"Oh absolutely! So many!" I said and lowered my knees to sit cross legged. "Where do I even start?"

What should happen to her? How do we feel about first person? It's a new writing style I'm trying.
