An Idiot's Guide to Being A Vegetarian
So, recently I've decided to become a vegetarian (long story involving biology dissections and the fact that I just can't look at chicken, fish, or steak without crying anymore). Most people are wacked up when they are told that someone is a vegetarian.
"Oh, you're such a sissy. There's nothing wrong with eating meat."
"What are you, a tree hugger?"
People like me are vegetarians not because we think meat is gross or we're one with the environment, man (XD); It's because we understand that meat comes from animals and we just don't feel like eating some animal's flesh. So here's somethings you need to know if you too are going to be a vegetarian.
1. VEGETARIAN DOES NOT MEAN VEGAN! Though, this may not make too much sense when you think in depth but vegetarians are not vegans. Vegans only eat plants and plant bi-products. Vegetarians don't eat meat, but we do eat animal bi-products like milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and gelatin (yes gelatin is made from animals).
2. Nuts are your friends. I grew up with a mother who used to be a vegetarian and had vegetarian friends and we had all kinds of nuts in our household. Peanuts, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, macademian nuts. These hold protein that can equal meat if eaten in the correct quantities.
3. Take your pills, kids. Since your not eating the protein and carbs from the meat, make sure you take your daily vitamins (we all know we skip sometimes). Otherwise this can lead to fainting, fatigue, muscle loss, and sometimes malnutrition.
4. Don't take anything from people. Your lifestyle is your choice. If someone starts teasing you about being a vegetarian don't take anything from them. That goes for vegans to. It's your life, it's your choice. You will eventually get some heat about it but let it go.
5. Commitment. We all know that you think you'll be so good at not eating meat. Truth is, even when you don't have the stomach for it anymore like me, we all get tempted by some fish and chips or chicken wings at one point or another. You can cheat, if you want. Make an exception. You might even get your taste back for it. But if this is really what you want to do, you need to have discipline.
That should cover it. Short, right. It's not that hard. Just remember these things. And if you're not vegetarian or vegan, make sure you don't give people that are a hard time. They made the choice for a reason. Some have to do it because of religion. Just keep that in mind.
