Getting Mr. O'Neil
When I noticed the blaring sound coming from April, I was worried about April getting attacked by the Kraang from her laptop. I don't care what Raph thought of me liking April, but I was the only one that didn't have anyone to go to like they did.
But I came up to April just as Mikey said, "It needs more drums!”
The sound stopped and I blinked, confused. Mikito popped up behind Mikey and asked, “What was that?”
“Sounds like something those dubstep kids listen to,” Natasha said casually, looking over curiously. “But they usually have more bass…”
“It was a random email, guys,” April replied, trying to stop the random comments from everyone. She looked at us, “It just started playing on its own.”
Then it was my turn, so I started by trying to impress April, “Sounds like some kind of telemetric sine wave subcarrier…”
Melanie looked over at me from the board game. The small family softly trying to ignore us all, “Dumb that down a bit, brainiac. We have non-smart mutants here.”
“It’s an interference modulation used to encrypt voert trans--” I started really quickly until Mikey poked his finger on my mouth, making my lips close up. I glared at him.
He looked at me unamused while he said, “Not enough notches down, bro.”
“A secret message!” I dragged out for him, letting my annoyance carry. I have the most idiotic brothers…
“But…” Apil started, looking at her laptop again. “Who would be sending me a secret message?”
Kyoto looked at her before looking back at Space Heroes. I looked at April worried. Mikito and Mikey left for their room to start a tickle fight. (I know because my room is beside theirs.) Naomi, Raph, and Melanie were still at the trivia game. Leo and Sophie were still into their show. I watched April until she continued reading the rest of her emails.
“April?” I asked softly, coming up cautiously.
She looked up at me, “Yeah, Donnie?”
“I could find out who sent you it if you let me borrow your laptop.”
“Really?”
“Of course!” I smiled. She smiled back and lifted her laptop as an offering. I took it and said, “I’ll get it solved as quick as I can!”
“Okay,” she nodded, getting up. “I’m gonna go order you boys pizza.”
“Did someone say order pizza?” Mikey’s voice echoed out of his room. But it was cut off with a giggling fit.
I rolled my eyes and walked to my lab, setting the laptop on my working table by my computer. Instantly, I starting working to decode it, already realizing it would take a few hours to solve.
Of course I was right. Hours later, long after my brothers and the others fell asleep, I finally decoded the message. It was peices at first, but I couldn’t listen to the entire message until I figured out the entire thing. So, when I heard Mr. O’Neil’s voice, I was stunned.
“April, it’s dad. I pray you get this message. I’ve been moved to a secret Kraang facility. Send help… If you can send help.”
“Oh, my gosh!” I gasped, getting up and away from the screen, letting the map and message dim down a little. I looked toward the main room and started, “Guys! You gotta--!” then I paused, remembering what Raph said to me earlier about keeping him out of trying to impress April.
So I looked at the computer screen and smiled at the map. I plugged my phone in and saved the gif. on it to help show the way. Heading toward the garage exit, I grabbed up my staff and slipped it in it’s sheath on my back shoulder strap. I looked back in the direction the main room past my lab and frowned. Leaving down the tunnels, I thought to myself, We’ll see who’s sadorable…
The tunnels were quiet without everyone with me, but I was actually really used to it. I would occasionally go topside at night when everyone was asleep to scavenge things out of the junkyard for most of my inventions. The quiet helped me think. I climbed up a ladder and moved aside the manhole cover, climbing into the alley, quietly putting the cover back into place.
It was just dawn when I started climbing up the fire escapes to the roofs. I was surprised not many more people were out and starting their daily schedules. But it was a Sunday. Maybe they were out for church or maybe sleeping in after the long week.
But I looked at my phone at the edge of the first roof I stopped to check my coordinates. I quickly jumped from roof to roof, following the flashing dot and following the coordinates, hopeful to help April out by finally getting her father back from months back.
As I ran, I started wondering if my brothers were waking up and found the laptop in the lab. I got it in a rerun so that in case they did find it, it would start playing and show the map so they wouldn’t worry about where I was. I still worried about my own being so that they would hopefully find where I went.
Drawing nearer to the location on the map, I stopped on the nearest roof and stopped, looking at my phone once again. I looked at it then the building that appeared to be a car repair shop. “Doesn’t look very Kraangy…”
I sighed and jumped down a fire escape, sliding down the ladder and then landing on the ground. Careful of not being seen in the low dawn light still, I kept my back to the buildings as I sneaked to the car repair garage door.
Coming up, I saw a pitiful padlock to the door. I pulled out my lockpick and quickly unlocked, smiling as I heard a satisfactory click. I looked around warily before pulling the door up and slipping it, quietly closing it once more.
My staff was in my hands, cautiously looking around for anything out of the ordinary. But all I saw were cars and more cars. Until I heard, “It is the ones called the Turtles!” and a Kraang blaster power up.
Turning around sharply, I ducked as the robot started shooting and started whacking him with my Bo staff, crying out. When the bot fell, I stood beside a car dropper. I pressed the button quickly, making a car smash down on the helpless mechanical being.
As the Kraang brain squealed, I pointed my staff at him and smirked, “Looks like you could use a tune up. Huh? Yeah. Right? Am I right?” I smiled then slammed my staff confidently on the ground and continued, “Who’s the hero now?” Suddenly, I hear more Kraang blasters start and began ducking down as the bullets shot past my head. “Ho. Ly. Cow!” I looked over, shocked as more Kraang came up. “No response necessary!”
I tried to take out the Kraang while they continued shooting. There was so many in a confined space, though, that I had to rely on hiding behind cars and jumping around. As I took down two to three more
Kraang, I jumped on a car and slid behind it, catching my breath for a second. Then I peeked out and they started shooting again, so I hid behind the car again. I thought I heard an electrical fail, but then the ground started falling beneath me.
The floor landed with a hard thud. I landed on the car top, denting it. Groaning, I sat up and looked around. Apparently that the car shop was a Kraang facility because I was in a deep underground base. Hanging lights hung from the ceiling, so I jumped up and started hopping along those to try and stay hidden.
As two Kraang walked by, I jumped back to the ground. Not many Kraang were around in this place, so I guessed that I could easily sneak through. Sneaking through the tunnels, I saw a Kraang leave a door. I blinked then smirked, getting my phone out and calling my voicemail to show a picture of me on the screen.
Tossing my T-Phone carefully in front of the Kraang, the bot leaned down to pick it up. When it moved it from view, I came up and swung my staff with both hands like a baseball bat. I took my T-phone from the mechanical alien and said with a cocky voice, “It’s from me.” I watched as the Kraang brain started squealing in displeasure. So I used my Bo staff once more and used it as a golf club, sending the pink blob to the wall. “And that’s for you.”
Looking at the fallen Kraang droid, I picked it up by the back of its head and stuck the eyes on the black diamond part of the door, letting the red lines scan that it was a Kraang and not an imposter.
Well… It was an imposter, but at least it wasn’t a camera entry. I would be screwed…
But, like I hoped, the door opened and I slipped in, looking around in amazement at the Kraang tech alone in this room. I was glad no other Kraang were around, but then I thought that the Kraang I took out must have been switching watch shifts. I didn’t have much time if that was the case.
I skipped through each of the television screens showing each of the very many cells until I saw Mr. O’Neil. “There you are,” I sighed in relief, then looking at the Kraang device in front of me. I hoped figuring this out wouldn’t be that hard. So I clicked a few buttons in high hopes that I clicked the right ones. When I heard a dozen unlatching doors in success, I smiled.
I left the room and quickly started searching through each and every cell, cracking open the doors cautiously, unsure what the Kraang really had in them. All of the ones I checked in one hallway were empty. It concerned me. So I went down another hallway.
When I opened the first door, I had to do a retake. I saw green. What was green in an underground cave prison? I peered in again, opening the door more. A green fluff ball was in the corner of the room. Confused, I came up closer to it to find it breathing.
Using my staff, I cautiously poked at it. It stirred. I blinked and took a step back, ready to attack if it was dangerous. A round fluffy head raised up and shook out the thick fur before turning its head to show two bright brown-gold eyes. It watched me carefully. Was it going to attack..?
The fluffy ball started to expand into a body with a long and curled tail, like a squirrels. It was a green squirrel? Was that something the Kraang had in Dimension X? But the features starting becoming more curious as it stood up. It was girl… That I could tell because of a torn shirt that was barely hanging on and the chest had prominent features, making me look away a little, feeling my face flush.
She looked at me curiously before asking in a soft and slightly scared voice, “Who’re you?”
Completely shocked and taken away that she could talk, I looked at her again, “I’m…. Donatello… But many call me Donnie… Who are you?”
She answered calmly, “Julie…” then looked around. “But that’s all I know… Other than your name now…”
“Oh,” I said, feeling slightly awkward, and unsure what to say. I looked at her closely, “You wanna come with me? Get out of here?”
“Will the place we be going better?” she asked in the most kindest way. I smiled nicely and nodded.
She smiled back and let her tail flick, “Good. Because I’m starved.”
“You sound like Mikey,” I smiled, leading her out to the hallway and let me continue my search for Mr. O’Neil.
“Who’s Mikey?”
“One of my brothers…”
“You have brothers?” she asked, following me around closely.
“Three others, yes,” I answered.
“Who are the others?”
“Raph and Leo are the last two… But they all have girlfriends too… Naomi, Mikito, Sophie….”
“Do you have a girlfriend?” she asked very softly, as if she didn’t want to protrude into the subject more. I paused and looked down, shaking my head. Julie looked a little sad and had the expression of wanting to hug me.
I thought I heard something, like a shuffle of movement, or whisper, and looked around. Julie was looking up, her expression curious. I sighed then looked at the last door of this hallway and peered in, relaxing when I saw Mr. O’Neil sitting in the corner.
“Hello? Mr. O’Neil?” I asked, coming up with a smile. Julie followed right behind me, because I could feel her breathing on my shoulder as she peeked over it. April’s father looked up at me a little confused and I continued, “It’s me, Donatello.”
He got up and smiled, “Thank goodness you’ve come!” and he hugged me. I blinked and looked at him as he pulled away.
Completely embarrassed to be hugged in front of Julie, I turned a little to the side, “Right… Uhm… Shall we go?”
“Yes!” Julie grinned, hugging my arm happily. I looked at her confused, and I felt my face flush as she pulled away, looking down in shame.
“Immediately,” O’Neil said, smiling in relief as he left the cell. Julie and I followed, Julie being behind me. He continued as we left, “I thought you might be able to decipher my message.”
I shrugged and decided to show off in front of the new mutant, “It wasn’t so bad. You used a basic BVB scramble algorithm, so I just…”
“Flopped the ECM data stream!” Mr. O’Neil and I said together excitedly.
But the moment was short lived because I saw something run in the corner of my vision. I thought it was Julie, but she was in the same place she was, staring at the two scientists like we were a dictionary.
“That wasn’t you?” I asked her.
“Wasn’t me what?” she returned, tilting her head.
“Donatello, why are the other cells open?” April’s dad questioned.
“I opened them to find you… But I didn’t see anyone else besides you and Julie,” I answered, worried about what did run past. Kraang don’t run that fast. It was ninja stealth. Maybe Leo and them showed up? But after a few more movements and no sign of the gang, I knew it wasn’t them...
