Chapter 9
***Welcome to the P90-X of book endings. I try to cram too much information into ten chapters, and y'all are just along for the ride LOL
Readers of "I Never Knew" will recognize a lot of the action/drama in this chapter, at least for Zane's POV. They might also recognize the song choice ;) If you want to know more about what happens between Jay and Nya in this chapter, refer to "I Never Knew" chapter 20. Beware, though: That chapter is DRAMA CENTRAL.
There's only one chapter and an epilogue left for this book. As you can imagine, the epilogue is going to be pretty important to this story line, just like in "At Second Sight" (if you're just here for the PIXane, you have no idea what I'm talking about XD).
Last thing: This chapter does contain important spoilers for "I Never Knew" if you haven't read that book. Just thought I'd let ya know <3***
***(Zane's POV)***
***Music Cue***
"Wake up!" someone screams. "You have to get up. He's going to hurt her!"
I allow my eyes to drift open and take in my surroundings. I'm in the monastery bunkroom. Cole was the only one in here, last I checked.
Why is Jay so upset?
He climbs up the side of my bunkbed, shaking me by the shoulders. "Get up, Zane!"
"What's wrong?" Cole asks groggily, stumbling out of bed.
"It's Lloyd," Jay cries. "He's drunk and angry, and he wanted to talk with Nya, but he was getting really riled up, so I stepped in, and then he tried to shoot us with his powers, and..." He throws his hands in the air. "Just follow me. Please!" He all but runs out of the bunkroom.
Cole tackles him to the ground. "Slow down, Jay. I didn't understand much of what you said, but it sounds like Lloyd is drunk, right? And he's aggressive right now?"
"Yes," Jay wails.
"Then you need to keep a cool head around him, Jay. We can't make him any more angry, or somebody could end up hurt."
Jay wiggles out from under Cole. "Fine, but we need to get out there now! Nya's with him!" Jay rushes away.
"Wait – Nya's with him?" Cole slaps his forehead and follows hot on Jay's heels.
I am not entirely sure what's going on – I'm still processing the news that I'm an android and that my father is dead – but I know there's an issue. I run after Jay, who seems to be leading us to the patio.
He mentioned Lloyd being drunk, correct? But...didn't Lloyd promise himself not to drink underaged? Why the sudden change of heart?
Jay throws open the door. "Get away from her, Lloyd," he says bravely.
Nya, only a few feet away from Lloyd, slowly looks toward us. She takes small steps back until she's closest to the rest of the team
Lloyd laughs at Jay's words, and his voice comes out slurred. "Funny. I could say the same about you."
Cole gently moves toward Lloyd, holding his hands out to pacify him. "Maybe we should all call it a night and talk about this in the morning. I know I always feel – "
Lloyd grunts, forming a huge ball of green energy between his hands. He launches it right at Cole.
I gasp, grabbing him by the arms and pulling him backwards with me. The blast collides with the monastery next to us.
This...is not the Lloyd my team and I know.
He is very broken, just like I was hours earlier.
"Are you crazy?" Cole scoffs. "You could've killed me!"
I glance behind me to see a huge hole in the side of the monastery.
Oh, no.
Lloyd shoots another blast right at Jay and Nya, who have migrated to the opposite side of the patio. Nya looks distraught and...very angry.
"Lloyd, stop!" she fumes.
"You're making me do this," he yells, continuing to shoot power blasts. His aim is random now – he hits a nearby shrubbery, the side of the building.
A small crack of lightning shoots into the air, and my gaze is drawn back to Jay and Nya.
She latches onto his shoulders. "Jay, no! He's drunk!"
"Well, I'm sorry, but we don't have a choice!" he exclaims. "We're all in danger!"
I swallow hard. Lightning could theoretically hurt Lloyd, especially since Jay is emotional right now. He lacks proper control over his power.
I take a deep breath. I don't want to give Lloyd frostbite or otherwise harm him, but I can try my best to subdue him. I take a running leap for him right as his hand comes up to –
Strike my head.
I feel...pain.
My body hits the ground, and everything seems a blur. It's all I can do to watch as Cole tries to calm down Lloyd. Nya...is crying, and she's wearing the most torn expression I've ever witnessed in her. She tries to get Jay's attention.
Attention for...what?
I don't figure out, lolling off into some dazed state. Something must have been damaged in my mind.
The next thing I know, Cole's bending over me. "Zane? Are you okay?" he asks.
I close my eyes. "I...do not know. What – have you calmed Lloyd down?"
"He's not volatile at the moment. Nya's talking with him and Jay about something – I can't say I'm really concerned about whatever it is. At least he's not attacking us." He frowns. "Do you think you need to go to the hospital?"
The hospital...no. That will only reveal that I'm not human.
"I...I should be fine," I reassure him.
Cole appears as though he doesn't believe me. "Zane, I really – "
"No, Nya!" Jay sobs, his voice escalating in volume.
I look over to see him turning on Lloyd as Nya runs inside the monastery.
"Why did you do this to us?" Jay demands. "I thought we were friends! You're her best friend! Can't you see what you've done?" He grabs Lloyd's shoulders.
Lloyd looks unmoved. "She'll be happier in a few hours, believe me. And you'll get over this."
Cole rises and quickly pulls Jay off of Lloyd. "Look, I don't know what happened, but now's not the time to attack each other."
Jay collapses against Cole. "He – Nya – he used himself against her. He used her against me! B-but she said sh-she loved me just a few hours ago!" His breath hitches. "I – we finally g-get the ch-chance to be h-happy, and L-Lloyd ruined it!"
"It's okay, Jay." Cole pats his best friend's back. "I'm sure you two can work things out. Right now, let's focus on regrouping. Zane doesn't look too good right now, so I imagine one of us will need to take him to the hospital."
The hospital...but my friends would figure out I'm an android! And I'm sure the doctors would ask questions, and when it came to light that drunken, sixteen-year-old Lloyd had been the source of my injuries...
I cannot let them get me medical help.
Lloyd appears next to me, extending a hand to help me up. "Sorry," he mumbles. "I didn't mean to hit you so hard."
I look up at my poor, broken friend, wary of his touch. Wasn't he attacking his team just moments before?
However, not wanting to offend him, I take his hand and allow him to pull me into a standing position. I stagger as I rise.
His blow to my head must've been quite...effective.
Seeing that Cole is distracted with helping Lloyd inside – and finding that Jay is too heartbroken to pay attention to his surroundings – I slip away.
I don't really know what I'm doing, but I stumble off the patio, down the steps, and to the garage. I locate my motorcycle, then try to think through the haze of my mind.
I know the route to PIXAL's – somewhere in my jumbled mind, I do. And I believe Cyrus Borg is my best option for solving...whatever is wrong with me.
***(PIXAL's POV)***
I find it incredibly difficult to rest this evening. Not that I need rest – I am an android – but I always find it a peaceful way to end my evening.
I cannot find peace right now.
I feel I should be awake, just in case Zane calls me. What if he has another breakdown and needs my company and support? He seemed to be all right when he left the library, but I am aware of the fluctuating nature of emotions, even if they are robotic.
That's when I hear it – a noise from the driveway. That is quite unusual.
I decide to head downstairs and see what the source is. Even though my father has an incredible security system, I'd prefer to identify any possible threats myself.
I slide into my purple fuzzy slippers. Since learning of the human attachment to footwear, I have tried to pay more respect to my own shoes. I conditioned these just tonight, and my father is purchasing three new pairs for me off the Internet.
I am becoming what is known as a shoe addict, I believe.
Once I descend the staircase, I walk to the door and look through the glass window beside it. The security light outside shows no activity.
Odd. I'm an android, so I don't just hear things that aren't really there. I wonder what happened?
Suddenly, a face appears in the window, and I do a doubletake.
"Zane?" I cry in disbelief. I unlock the door and pull him inside.
He stumbles into the doorway, and I have to help steady his footing.
"What's the matter?" I ask, relocking the door. "Are you all right?"
He seems rather off-balance, given his abrupt journey inside. "I...believe I have been injured, PIXAL." He sinks down onto the floor.
I kneel beside him. "What happened? Who hurt you? Was it the Sons of Garmadon?"
"No," he says quietly. "My teammate...I received a blow to the head."
"All right. Let me fetch Mr. Borg for you. Stay right here." I rush off down the hall.
"Father!" I call, banging on his door. "Father!"
I hear stirring from inside. "What's wrong, PIXAL?" he asks, his voice muffled and groggy.
"It's Zane," I reply. "He's injured."
My father cracks open the door, revealing a pair of tired eyes. "What?"
I open the door the rest of the way, taking the handles on his wheelchair. "Zane, father. He received a blow to the head, and something was messed up in the process." I guide him to where Zane is laying in the hall.
"Help him walk with me to the lab," Borg instructs. "That way, we can figure out exactly what's wrong."
I place Zane's arm around my shoulder, standing up. He slumps against me, but manages to take a few shaky steps.
"What did you say happened to you?" I ask, concern lacing my tone.
"Lloyd broke," he mutters. "He attacked the team. I was the only one injured."
"Lloyd?" I ask, astonished. I had not thought that Zane's friends would turn on each other.
"Yes. He broke," Zane says again.
"Okay." We reach the lab, and my father flips on the light. I guide Zane to the nearest chair and set him down.
My father begins a scan of his mental processes. It seems most everything is intact, except for a minor wiring disconnect near his power switch.
"I can theoretically fix this using a new invention I created," my father muses. He rolls over to his cabinet, retrieving a bottle of what appears to be...medicine?
"These tablets contain mini repair robots," Borg explains, wheeling back to us. "Here, take one."
I retrieve a tablet from my father and gently help Zane take it. "Do your friends know you are here?" I inquire.
He frowns. "No. I...could not tell them."
"Then they must be worried about you," I realize. "Do you have your cell phone? Can we message them?"
Zane shakes his head in the negative. "No. I left it in the bunkroom in our hurry to keep Lloyd from injuring anyone."
"He still got to you," I sigh, patting his shoulder. "All right. If we may, we could use one of our phones to call them."
Zane's eyes plead with me. "My team would only ask questions, PIXAL. I don't want them to know I'm a robot yet. Please, just...take me home?"
I look to my father.
"The tablet should begin to take effect within half an hour," Borg muses. "He could sleep off his injury at home, and you could check in on him tomorrow."
"Please," Zane says. "I should get back to them, anyway. They need me – my team is crumbling."
I sigh. "You promise you'll be careful?"
"Of course."
"Fine, then. I will drive you home." I help him up.
We head out to my father's garage in silence. His steps are still faulty, indicating I'll probably have to help him into the monastery. I know he doesn't want his team to know he's a robot, but I'm more concerned about his safety.
Once we're settled in the car, he whispers, "Thank you for helping me."
"Of course, Zane. I'm so sorry this happened to you."
"I am, too." He stares out his window.
The ride back is even quieter than our trek outside. We don't speak again until we're at the monastery.
"Let me help you out," I suggest, unbuckling myself.
"No, PIXAL. I – I think I will be fine. I would like to wait to introduce you to the team, if that's all right. I just need time."
"I understand, Zane, but if you can't walk, you really should allow me to help you." I study his face, hoping he'll notice the care in my features.
He forces a smile, opening his door. "I will be fine. If you are going to worry, worry about my team – they may not survive the struggle we're currently enduring."
***;) Hopefully, that action summary wasn't too confusing for you all! The part of the action Zane's POV was derived from is VERY Jaya-centered in "I Never Knew".***
