June 2022 (ii) Writing and Multimedia Tips
Hey, good morning, good afternoon or good night if you're reading at any of these times. Today we're going to talk about how you might be able to introduce LGBT characters into your stories.
First, you need to know your character in every way and that includes his sexuality as well, but remember, as much as your character doesn't have a relationship with another person, that doesn't rule out the possibility that he has some sexuality. So now I invite you to look very briefly at the acronyms, they will be of utmost importance in the future.
C- Cisgender are people who identify with the gender they were born. Example: Ariana Grande is a Cisgender woman, as she has always identified with a woman since birth.
L - Lesbians are women who are attracted to people of the same gender as themselves. They can relate in an affective way or not.
G- Gay are men who are attracted to people who recognize themselves as being the same gender as they are, being able to relate in an affective way or not.
B- Bisexuals are people who are attracted to people who identify themselves as male, female or gender, and can relate in an affective way or not.
T- Trans people are those who do not recognize themselves with the gender they were born. The vast majority of trans people already feel that that gender does not belong to them since they were young, so when they reach adulthood, many tend to transition, and from that moment on they start to feel comfortable with their bodies.
Q- Queer or Fluid genders are people who identify with both genders.
I - Intersex are people who are born with two genitals, and both are different.
A- Genders are people who do not identify with any gender.
+ - Asexuality, demisexuality and pansexuality are included here. Asexuals are people who are not physically attracted to other people. Demisssexuals are people who only relate affectionately only when they really like and trust another person and Pansexuals are people who relate to others in an affective way regardless of the flag or gender that they carry.
WHAT IF MY MAIN CHARACTER IS LGBT?
After seeing the acronyms, we now have a brief notion of what sexuality or gender is in your character. That done, we need to keep in mind about the character's emotions. Depending on the context, you as an author can give an introduction of when he recognized himself with the sexuality/gender he has nowadays, how his parents were accepted and how his friends treated them, after that you will have a perception of how his character is at his core, whether he's afraid to open up to others about sexuality/Gender or if he's super open about his sexuality/Gender.
HOW DO I BE INSPIRED IN CREATING A LGBT CHARACTER?
● Watch movies/series that contain LGBT characters. Get this about their stories, their relationship with friends and family, how people treat them on the street. Take this with you;
● Listen to songs by LGBT artists or whose lyrics speak about LGBT pride. Write down passages and see if they fit into your characters' lives.
● Talk to people who are part of this flag and I had questions about their gender or sexuality.
● Talk to other LGBT story writers and write down what inspired them to write.
Good luck and live the LGBTQIA+ Pride!
