Tips for Writing a Humorous Plot

1. Trust your potentiality – It is important for you to trust your ability. You need to be aware about your writing style and be obvious while writing your story. Everyone has the potential to be funny. Try to channel your thoughts, ideas, feelings, emotions through your characters. You can imagine yourself in the particular situation and then voice out your thoughts through your characters.

2. Be sure about the plot – You need to be sure about the plot because one small incident might turn your humorous story into a tragic one. Be certain about the episodes that you will pen down in your story to keep up with the humor element.

3. Use humor at proper timings – It is necessary for the timings to be appropriate. Humor at wrong places may prove displeasing to your audience. For example, if two of your characters are having a conversation and one of them says, "You can't judge a book by it's....."The obvious answer to this would be 'Cover'. However, you can add 'Movie'. Thus, proper words and sentences at proper timings are mandatory.

4. Keep synonyms and antonyms handy – A single word can be really, really funny. It may be the way they sound or even how they're spelled that gets the laugh. You'll know immediately when you see one, which is why synonyms and antonyms become important.

5. Keep the surprise element- An important part of a humor story is the element of surprise. Take your audience by surprise, introducing them to characters and situations which might go beyond their imagination. Eg, She skimmed the items on her shopping list: bread, milk, eggs, and a pet dinosaur. Her son had scribbled that last one.

6. Introduce comic characters – Comic characters are far by an important element. Make your characters funny, in a natural way. Either their looks, their behavior, or the situations they find end up in, try to make everything look funny.
