What is a Community Project?

Community Projects are a collaborative effort to tell a greater story. The main plot of the story is told over the course of the project timeline, through phases.

Authors are encouraged to participate in these events through specific prompts, and they document their interactions in the form of a narrative story.

Usually, a project will allow authors to create their key character around which their story revolves, and that character must interact with others in order to participate in, cope with, or survive the events of the story.

Every Community Project will have a dedicated Project Guide, usually in this format:

Project Status

This initial chapter will always let you know what is happening with the project.

It might be (CLOSED), in which case it will let you know when the next run is.

It could be (UNDER CONSTRUCTION), in which case it will tell you where you can go to participate in developing the contest.

Sometimes you might see a project on (HIATUS), which means we're just taking a break and focusing on some other things.

Alternatively, a project might be (ARCHIVED), which means it's been discontinued for a while, but we're keeping it around for posterity.

Otherwise it will always be (IN PROGRESS), which means it won't be accepting more participants until the next iteration. If this is the case, it will show the current active calendar for the project, as well as where you can go to see all the action!

The Overview

Here, the Community Project Guide will explain the overarching themes, key concepts and general overview of the story.

Generally, there will also be a timeline in the overview, showing you whether the current run is Open for Entrants, Currently Active, or Closed for Review.

The Set-Up

The Guide will provide you with all the background information you'll need to get started. This usually includes the thematic set-up, the key events for the plot and the prompts for creating your character.

The Story and Phases

A few chapters will cover the story over the course of the Project, giving updates on the overarching narrative as it progresses. These will also include prompts for participants and instructions on what to do in each phase.

The Resolution

This chapter is dedicated to closing the narrative run and summarising all key events and developments.

The Source Materials

These chapters contain all the background information of the project and will supply you with histories, event breakdowns, random letters and anything else that adds to our world-building for the project.

It might be daunting at first, but each Project Guidebook will aim to be as helpful as possible. Be sure to always read the Guidebook's instructions thoroughly and never hesitate to ask questions if anything is unclear.
