Characters Acting Out of Line

Okay okay. I'm going to use an example from a book I read, please adapt into your own fandoms.

Earlier:
I was a cold hearted assassin that bypassed all of my training because I was too cold hearted for that puppy love. I had this super secret poisin that was the only one I knew about, but I'll never give away its secrets.

Now:
"Wanna know how I got this?" He asks, holding up my super secret dart that has my super secret poison on it that only I know about.

"No!" I cry out, like my boyfriend is being murdered.

You get the point right? Why the heck would a supposedly brilliant assassin just give off all of their secrets in like, half a second? It makes no sense! What I would accept, would be this;

"Wanna know how I got this?" He asks, holding up my super secret dart that has my super secret poison on it that only I know about.

"Delight me." I sneer slightly. Internally I was freaking out, like how the heck am I supposed to get my dart back dammit!

See?

I would be cool with that really hurtful writing because at least the character is believable and somewhat maintains the 'cold-hearted exterior' that you so valiantly claimed he or she or even shim had before.

There's an interesting balance of your character that you need to have when writing because otherwise it turns people away immediately. Please, do yourself a favour, go back a chapter or two (or perhaps even a pivotal point in the book, maybe even the first chapter if you aren't that far in) realise what your character's goal is, how they should react in a certain scene or situation. It may take a little longer but it makes the book more worthwhile for everyone.
