Tulsa, Oklahoma
I woke up, rubbing my eyes and taking in my surroundings. Right, I'm on a plane. Tim was snoring softly beside me, his glasses were barely staying on the bridge of his nose. I rolled my eyes and stared out the window to my left. The only thing that was visible were clouds and the blue sky. I sighed, leaning back in my seat, and crossed my arms over my chest. Damn this is boring.
I tapped my foot restlessly, and a craving for a cancer stick began to arise again. My stomach gave a low rumble and the need of a cigarette, was replaced with the need of food. I licked my lips when the thought of burgers, pizza, hot dogs, anything really came into my mind. I rested my head back, closing my eyes, trying to think of something else.
"Passengers please make sure your seat belts are on. We will now be landing in Tulsa, Oklahoma."
Tim suddenly bolted up right, and I snorted. He adjusted his stupid glasses and fastened his seat belt tighter. Mine was alright, so I just braced myself for the landing.
After a few minutes, the plane jolted slightly and we began to go down. I grabbed the arms rests, like I had done at the beginning, and tensed. We came in contact with the runway and the plane shook. I gritted my teeth, but Tim seemed so relaxed. I wondered briefly how many times he had been on a plane.
"We have now arrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It's safe to take off your seat belts. We hope you had a great flight, and have a good day."
Tim's grin returned. "Ah it's good to be back home!" He said.
I rolled my eyes for the umpteenth time today. "Yeah, I bet it is."
"I never got your name."
I sighed. "If you have to know, it's Dallas. Dallas Winston."
Tim nodded. "Well it's been a pleasure flying with you Dallas."
I raised an eyebrow, and shook my head as Tim joined the people in the aisle to get off the plane. I followed behind him, until I was back into a new airport.
Right away I noticed how much smaller it was compared to the one in Manhattan. Everything seemed really...different. Slower and quieter maybe.
I shoved my hands into my pockets and secretly followed Tim so I could find a way out of this place. Once we entered the main area, Tim was greeted with a big hug from various people. They must have been the family that he was talking about.
I walked around him, and out the exit once I found it. I stepped outside of the building, wondering what it was like to have a family that actually cared about what happened to you.
I felt like I was on a completely different planet in a matter of seconds. Everything seemed so much more open than New York. I noticed some groups of people walking together. There were two guys, each with their arms wrapped around a girls' shoulder. They had sweaters and tan pants on, and the girls wore skirts that went down to their knees and blouses. I frowned slightly. God, is everyone like this here?
As soon as they past me, they stopped their chatter and gave me a nasty glare of pure hatred and disgust. I guess some things are the same.
I didn't pay them any attention, I decided finding someplace to eat would be more important. I turned to the right, walking down a street.
After a couple minutes I finally spotted a diner. I went as quickly as possible to the entrance, Jesus I was starving. I entered and there were red booths and black and white tiled flooring. There were only a few people seated.
A waitress with curly blonde hair, and bright red lipstick came towards me. She had on a short skirt and low heels. "Can I help you, hon?" She asked. Oh God. I forgot about the accents. Her voice had an annoying southern twang.
"Um yeah. I just need a table," I said slowly.
"Right this way," she said and guided me to a small table with a red chair.
"Thanks," I mumbled as she placed a menu in front of me.
"No problem, sugar. I'll be right back to take your order."
I cringed slightly. How the hell was I going to live here. Sighing, I looked the menu over. They had almost everything; steak, burgers, sandwiches, ice cream. The prices weren't that bad either.
The waitress returned after a few minutes, and pulled out a small notepad. "You ready?"
"Uh yeah. I'll have a coke, two burgers, fries, and vanilla ice cream."
She nodded and quickly scribbled it down on her notepad. "Comin' right up."
I placed my elbows on the table and rested my head in my hands. I had no idea where I was going after this. Living on the streets didn't seem that appealing.
Suddenly there was a loud burst through the door, and two boys came in laughing. They both had grease in their hair and were wearing jeans and sneakers. I furrowed my brows, remembering that group that I had just seen that was dressed so nice.
One of the boys looked around and made eye contact with me. He was pretty tall and had rusty colored hair. He grinned slightly and nudged the other one, pointing in my direction. Oh great.
They both made their way over. The one that had been pointing pulled up a chair and sat across from me. He put his elbows on the table and leaned forward. Then his grin disappeared. "Glory! Did ya get jumped by some Socs?" He asked.
"What?"
He pointed to one of my bruises. "You look like you got into somethin'."
Why are people so damn nosy. I just shrugged, "You got a reason for disturbing me?"
The boy just laughed and the other continued to stare at me. He had dark hair that was combed and greased. "Hey I haven't seen you before," he said slowly.
"I wouldn't expect you to."
"Hey I like this kid!" The one sitting at the table said. He reached out his hand, "I'm Two Bit," he said. "Two Bit Mathews."
I decided that it couldn't hurt to shake it. "Dallas Winston."
The boy with the dark hair, that was combed in swirls stretched his hand out too. "Steve Randle," he said with a smile.
I nodded and shook back. Just then, the waitress came back and set down my food. "There you are," she said and left to help the other tables.
"Damn Carol looks good," Steve said as he shook his head and watched the waitress go by.
"Amen to that," Two Bit replied. He then reached out, and popped a french fry into his mouth.
"Every fry you take that's a finger you lose," I said. These two were getting on my nerves and I really just wanted to eat.
"Feisty are we?" Two Bit said.
Steve shook his head. "Sorry about him. He was dropped as a kid." He swiftly hit Two Bit in the back of the head.
"Ow! Hey watch the hair!"
I took a bite from my burger, hoping they would leave soon.
"So, I think it's pretty clear you're new," Steve said. "Where ya from?"
"New York," I replied as I took a sip of my coke.
"Woah, really? What's it like there?" Two Bit asked, suddenly interested.
"What is this, an interrogation?"
"Fine," Two Bit said. "Hey, Steve and I are going to the Curtis' place soon. Wanna come with?"
"Why the hell would I want to go to your little friends house?" I asked.
Two Bit grinned wildly. "Cause I got your wallet," he said. Proudly holding it up.
"Hey! Give it back!" I yelled.
Steve just watched in amusement.
"Gotta come with us I guess," Two Bit said.
I had no time for this. I stood up and shoved him to the ground. He looked a little stunned at first, but to my surprise he lunged back. We wrestled on the floor until I got a good grip on his arm. I quickly flipped him onto his stomach and dug my knee in his back, pulling his arm at the same time.
"Ow ow owww! Okay, okay!" He wailed.
I grinned and took my wallet back. I sat back in my seat, and continued eating, like nothing happened. Two Bit remained on the floor, rubbing his arm.
"Ha you got beat Mathews!" Steve said laughing. "Hey Dallas, you should come with us. The Curtis' are real tuff."
I definitely liked this Steve guy more than Two Shit.
I shrugged, finishing off my second burger. I had nothing better to do...Having some familiar faces could be a good idea. "Yeah I guess so."
Two Bit got up from the floor and sat on the table next to me with Steve. "You could meet everyone. There's Darry, Pony, Soda, and Johnnycake."
I snorted. "You guys sure got quite some interesting names here."
Two Bit took another fry and put it in his mouth. I glared at him, and he innocently raised his hands up.
I finished up my food and the waitress, Carol, came back. "You all done?" She asked.
"I'd like a little more of the melons please," Two Bit said and then erupted in laughter.
Carol rolled her eyes, ignoring his comment. "That will be $2.15," she said.
I counted out the money and she took it, along with the dirty plates.
"Well let's get going," Steve said. "I don't know about you but I'm in the mood for some chocolate cake."
Two Bit nodded eagerly, "Oh boy that cake is to die for," he then turned to me. "Mrs. Curtis makes the best chocolate cake you will ever taste."
I nodded, and followed the two boys out of the diner, and on my way to the Curtis house.
