James Cortez was happy. He had just graduated high school, and was looking forward to starting a new chapter in his life. Now, he couldn't wait to spend two months of freedom with his friends. He already had tons of ideas in store. James was clearly excited, it showed on his face.

"Ma, I'm home!" James announced. He had just arrived from lunch with his buddies.

"Oh James! You're home! Early..." Emma, James's sister, exclaimed, mumbling the last part.

James narrowed his eyes slightly at her. "Yeah, I am." He headed towards the stairs before stopping to turn look at Emma again. "Wait... aren't you supposed to be in a flight to whatever country?"

Emma's eyes widened as she smiled suspiciously. "Oh yeah! That..." They fell silent for quite a while. The house phone suddenly rang. "I'll get it!" Emma immediately yelled, running towards the phone. James simply rolled his eyes at her and headed towards his room. He lay down on his bed in silence. He heard a ring and grabbed his phone.

"Hello?" James asked. He smiled a bit, knowing who was on the other line. "Hey dude." a voice replied.

James went down the stairs later that night. He saw his mother and Emma in the living room. Emma heard his footsteps and opened her mouth to speak.

"I have something to tell you." they said simultaneously. "Go ahead." James smiled. Emma chewed her lip nervously. "What? You're pregnant?" James asked, feigning surprise. Emma's eyes widened. "No!" she yelled, pounding her fist in frustration, looking like a tomato. James laughed. "Chill, woman!"

"What were you gonna say?" He sat down. Emma sighed. "Since it's summer, and you just graduated, your father and I decided we go out of town. For the whole break." their mother cut in.

"What?!"

And just like that, James's dreams were crushed.
