Chapter 1
~ Astrid's POV ~
I felt the rising summer sun warm my face through the slightly open window.
Morning already?
I glanced down at my husband sleeping soundly beside me. His ruffled dark hair strewn over his blushed face and forehead. I smiled blissfully and slowly laced my fingers with his as I snuggled close to him.
Five more minutes...
He sighed through his nose and buried his head a little more into the chicken-feather pillows as he roused because of my movement.
"Morning..." I whispered with a soft laugh, brushing my eyelashes against his. He nodded his reply with his eyes still closed and pulled me close to his chest.
I sighed and wrapped my arms around him, his heart beating gently against my cheek. Hiccup leant forward, kissed my head and yawned. "I don't want to get up..."
I huffed at the thought, once Hiccup was up, we would probably have no time together for the rest of the day. I missed the times when we spent hours, even entire days from sunrise to sundown, flying. "I don't want you to get up."
"How long do you reckon I have before Gobber appears at the window begging for me to come out and rescue him from a hoard of angry Berkians?"
"Two minutes..." I sarcastically replied. Hiccup groaned and pulled the pillow over his head. "Over my cold, dead body..."
I giggled and wormed my way under. "I'll hold them off, give you as much time as I can."
He chuckled and kissed me in the stuffy warmth of the pillow. "We'll run away together, the three of us."
I sighed, that sounded inviting. Just me, my husband and our four year old daughter, Lucy.
My thoughts were interrupted by a knock on our door and an indignant moan from Hiccup before he reluctantly slid out of the warm blanket and onto his feet. I reached for him with weak protests before giving up and flopping back under the covers. "I'll be right there, chief..."
While Hiccup talked to somebody downstairs about a Snaffle Fang that had teamed up with a Gronckle and pillaged the fish storage, I threw back the covers and rubbed my face.
I hate mornings.
The pine floor was cold and sent shivers through my toes as I tip-toed from one side of the room to the other where the clothes chest was.
I washed, changed and sat down to braid my hair as Lucy skipped through the door. She was also dressed in her little blue tunic and skirt, and her golden hair was roped up in two small buns on the back of her head. She hopped over to me and grinned, her green eyes sparkling. "Good morning, Mama."
I smiled down at her, but I didn't reply as I was concentrating on getting my braid to stay in the leather band. When I was done, I slapped my knees and bent to her level. "Good morning, shorty!"
"Where's Papa?"
"Talking to somebody downstairs." With a nod, Lucy scurried away and ran down the stairs so fast she couldn't stop and proceeded to charge right into Hiccup's legs.
She was so light that the bump only nudged Hiccup though and he looked down with a smile and ruffled her hair. "Well, good morning, my little Night Fury!" he laughed, receiving an appreciative giggle from his little girl.
I followed and rested a hand on Hiccup's shoulder. "What's happened?"
Hiccup rolled his eyes. "No emergencies, but it needs sorting. I gotta go."
He grabbed his armour from off the table where he had left it the night before because he had come in so late that I was already asleep when he arrived back home.
"But you haven't even eaten yet?!" I fought, trying to give him a reason to stay.
"I'll eat later. I'll see you in a few hours, Trader Johann's coming this afternoon!"
I pouted, but he ignored me and picked up Lucy. "I'll see you later." he smiled gently kissing her cheek.
"And one for Magnus!" she squealed holding up the toy dragon I had made for her.
"Oh Thor! I am sorry, goodbye Magnus!" he laughed, giving the stuffed toy a kiss.
"And one for luck!" she giggled, tapping her forehead with the heel of her hand.
"Alright, one more for luck." he smiled, kissing her gently before resting her on the floor and kneeling down in front of her.
"Do I get one from you?" He asked with a half smile.
She grinned excitedly, her rosy cheeks and bright eyes stealing Hiccup's heart for the billionth time. She gently kissed his nose and he sighed contentedly. "I'll see you later, I love you."
He stood and faced me, his green eyes glistening like they always do. "Do I get a kiss?" I asked, folding my arms and looking down at my feet.
"Do you want one?"
"Maybe..." I murmured bashfully.
He lifted my chin up and pressed his lips against mine.
"Mmm...can I have one for luck?" I whispered with a smile. He laughed and kissed me again and again and once more before I pushed him out of the door.
"Okay, okay! Just go, Chief! I have work to do!" I laughed.
He grinned and stepped backwards out of the door, slowly closing it behind him.
I turned to look down at my effervescent little girl and smiled. "Come' on then, Luc, let's get to work."
