He is the Spirit of power
The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of power
There are many thoughts that come to mind when we think of power. Perhaps we've read statements like, "power corrupts." I do not believe that power corrupts. God is the most powerful of all the people you'll ever know, and yet, He is so pure.
Power rather just reveals the nature of the person. It's not bad, as people have made it to be. It's a good thing and it's something that the believer can benefit from.
- Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
Genesis 1:26 NKJV
God gave man dominion. What's dominion? That's power to reign. That's power to rule. If God gives power, that tells us that it's pure. Every gift the Father give is pure.
Now, how is the Holy Spirit the Spirit of power?
- But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
Acts 1:8 NKJV
The Greek word used for power is dynamis. It means: force, ability, abundance, strength, might and violence. Can you imagine just how much power we can have when we function in the Holy Spirit? Did you ever think about the paradox of the Holy Spirit being a comforter and someone with violence at the same time?
You'd ask, why do we need power? Because we have a human nature that fails. Left to ourselves, we cannot do much.
People have gone on to believe they don't need God. But no! That couldn't be further from the truth. We need God. And we need His power.
- The voice said, "Cry out!" And he said, "What shall I cry?" "All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it; Surely the people are grass.
Isaiah 40:6-7 NKJV
The bible says, "All flesh is grass." Let's think about this for a moment. What power do we have? What might do we have? It's only the grace and mercies of God that keep us alive.
We need power because we are weak. We need His strength if we ever going to do anything with our lives.
The Holy Spirit makes our lives extraordinary. Without His presence, we are left to our ordinary selves. Lacking strength. Ability and might.
- So he answered and said to me: "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' Says the Lord of hosts.
Zechariah 4:6 NKJV
In the above scripture, the people quickly learned that they had no power with and in of themselves. They needed that extra 'umph'. Then the text says, "But my Spirit." We cannot do anything without the Spirit of God. That's why we need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit.
In the name of Jesus, Everlasting Father we thank you. We bless you. Lord, help us to walk in your power all the days of our lives. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen
