chapter twenty two

Third Person POV

Heiji sighed at her phone screen. It had been a full day since her run in with Sunwoo and Seoho. She slept better at night because now she knew the truth, the only problem was that Sunwoo refused to answer her back.

The girl knew he could be stubborn at times. Hell, he refused to let her go when she was with someone else - that's pretty stubborn.

But she didn't think he would be this stubborn. It wasn't a turn off, it didn't put her off him necessarily, she knew if they were together - it's something she could handle, and she would.

Because truthfully, the boy was worth every second of worrying and trouble he put her through, and that's just how it was.

For all the times the boy brought trouble, it was nothing compared to all the times he made her feel special, she would even say loved - but she didn't want to say the word too fast. But she felt secure and safe with the boy, she knew how genuine he was about him and her, and that was more than good enough.

How could she have been so blind? Sunwoo had warned her, Jinsoul had warned her, hell- even Seoho himself warned her.

"Please answer your phone," Heiji sighs, looking down at her text messages to the boy. "You're killing me here."

The girl let's out another exasperated breath before throwing on her work uniform quickly, not even taking a minute to fix herself in the mirror before heading out the door.

By the time she had got to work, the girl was exhausted - she walked today and at a faster pace than usual.

"You look tired," Sangyeon laughs as the girl enters the staff room. "Here."

The man hands her a bottle of water and the girl bows to him in appreciation.

"You're also fifteen minutes early, that's not like you."

"Meh," the girl shrugs. "I had nothing else to do."

"The sad life of a student," Sangyeon laughs. "It's just me and you tonight, so we'll take turns as cashier?"

"No," Heiji shakes her head. "You're the manager. You've got better things to be doing than standing on a till for hours."

"We'll figure it out," the man reassures. "Don't start until Jacob is finished his shift, please."

"You know he stands there for an extra few minutes to speak to the customers," Sangyeon looks over and nods at the girl.

"Exactly," he laughs. "And you look like you could do with an extra few minutes to sit and relax. Managers orders."

Heiji smiles appreciatively at the man who leaves her in the room alone to gather her breath and get the sweat off her forehead.

"Heiji," Jacob calls from the door. "Someone's here to see you?"

She almost flies off of her seat, knocking her knees off the table in the process. Who could it be?

"Hey you," Kevin smiles as Jacob walks back to his original position at the tills. "Are you alright?"

"I'm great, thank you," the girl says, looking rather not so great. "Are you?"

"Yeah," the boy nods. "Have you seen Sunwoo?"

"No," the girl blurts almost instantly. "Why? How come?"

Kevin scratches the back of his neck, "he didn't show up for work two hours ago. I stayed on an extra while hoping he would turn up but he didn't."

"Shit," Heiji blurts out again, taking out her phone and instantly dialling his number. "Answer machine."

"I know, we've been trying for hours," Kevin sighs. "It's not even that he could lose his job, I'm just more worried about him."

The boy genuinely was. Heiji didn't even know half of the things that he did about the boy, she probably wouldn't have realised they were that close. Truthfully, they were but they weren't.

One night after work the two decided to go out and have a drink, confessing some home truths in the process. One was that he didn't love his girlfriend, and the other was the hard time he had at home and how it impacted him mentally.

"Worried?" Heiji asks, looking at the distressed boy.

"Well, probably just as worried as you are," Kevin diverts the tone. He didn't want to tell the girl anything about the boys life that she didn't know - that was down to him. "I'm sure he's okay. He'll appear for work tomorrow and we'll feel silly for even worrying."

Heiji nods at the boy, truthfully, she felt sick to her stomach with worry for the boy. Kevin gives her a small hug, before saying his goodbyes and asking the girl not to get too worried - but she already was.

Waiting for Jacob to stop speaking to an older couple, Heiji hovered around the till area, staring straight into space.

"That's me finished, Heiji," the boy said whilst walking past her. "Are you alright?"

"I'm great, Jacob," Heiji smiled at the boy. "Thanks for asking."

Her shift was going pretty fast, aside from her hands trembling every now and again from worry of the boy and his whereabouts, the same nauseating feeling that appeared every so often - she told herself she was okay, and so was he.

He was just upset she didn't believe him. That was something she could fix, she could make him understand, right?

It wasn't over. She kept telling herself this.

"I've gotta say," Sangyeon approaches the tills, placing his back against the cabinets behind them. "You're my favourite person to work with."

The girl was flattered, from a manager so cool like Sangyeon, she never expected to hear his words. "Seriously?"

"Seriously," he nods, throwing her a smile. "Listen, I know you probably hate working here, who doesn't? But it never shows on your face once, it's quite impressive."

"Unlike Eric?" The girl laughs. The boy never took his job seriously, partly because he hated it and partly because if he hated it that much - he would be as well to take the piss whilst doing it, make it fun.

Sangyeon rolls his eyes at the thought of the boy. "Exactly. Like today for example, you looked really stressed out when you came in, not once would a customer have guessed. It's impressive."

"It's called great customer service," the two laugh. It felt good for Heiji to finally laugh, she hadn't in a couple of days and it was great to take her mind off of things. "And for that, I should be getting a badge."

"A badge?" The man laughs loudly. "What kind of badge?"

"Hmm," the girl pretends to think. "Employee of the month, perhaps?"

"Ah!" Sangyeon points a finger at her, smiling. "You know they just get a post on the wall in the staff room, not a badge."

"But for me, you should make an exception, and make a badge."

"You'd wear that badge for months, don't lie," he says, walking through to the shelves at the front of the tills. "You'd never take it off."

"And?" Heiji says laughing, as the man laughs with her. "Who else would the badge go to?"

"Meh," the man shrugs, genuinely having to take a moment to think about it. "Maybe Jacob."

"I can see that," Heiji nods. "I'd share it with him."

"You know Eric would want a badge just so he didn't feel left out, right?"

"Yeah. We could just give him a little one with anything written on it and the boy would wear it," Heiji laughs. "Just say he's employee of the year."

"That'll be right, I don't even think he'd win employee of the day, never mind employee of the year."

The two laugh out loudly, as a customer approaches the till and Heiji has to keep her laughter contained - at least a bit more than it was. She greets the customer, the smile never leaving her face.

It was the first time in days her mind was taken wholly off of the two boys, and she was grateful that Sangyeon was able to do that. She never thought that her workplace would be the place where she felt happiest at one point.

Gazing through the window, however, was the boy that never left her mind, until now. And that's when he saw her smiling, laughing - forgetting about him.

He couldn't help but smile as he watched her chatting with her manager. She had always exaggerated how much she hated her job, so he was glad to see her enjoying it for once.

His good was up, the bag on his back weighed him down and hurt his shoulders, but he couldn't stop looking at the girl.

That uniform should have been enough to make anyone look ridiculous, to make anyone look less than decent. Somehow, she made it look good.

Sunwoo thought she was beautiful regardless, the most beautiful girl ever - in his eyes. He knew he wasn't the only one who thought this. Her fair hair and those big beautiful eyes, he would be crazy to think he was the only one who admired this girl. But it was a different kind of admiration for this girl, and he'd never let that go.

Except, for now he had to.

This look at the girl was his last look at her, so he was really taking everything in, from her tanned skin to how big her cheeks went when she smiled widely. It was a smile he had grown to love.

He took a deep breath, watching as the man walked behind the counter and the two continued joking and bantering. It hurt seeing another man make her happy, but he knew it wasn't like that.

He smiled one last time, taking in every last feature of the girl for one last time. Her eyes momentarily gazed in his direction, but before she could even begin to figure out who the mysterious figure in the hoodie was - he was gone.

He was really gone.
