chapter twenty six
Third Person POV
"Is it just me, or is the tree sitting at a weird angle?" Heiji's mother asks as her daughter comes pacing down the stairs. "I don't know if my eyes are deceiving me or not."
"It looks a bit lopsided," Heiji skips over to help her mother stand it up a little straighter. "There we go."
"Where are you going dressed all nice?" Her eyes travel up and down Heiji, with her thick woolly tights and her green shimmery dress.
"I'm meeting everyone for a drink, a Christmas celebration."
"I'll be gone when you're back," her mother sighs, eyeing the clock. "So I better say an early Merry Christmas."
The pair stand cuddling for about a minute, before Heiji's phone buzzed in her pocket. "Merry Christmas to you too, mother. But we'll have all day tomorrow to spend together. I've gotta run."
She kisses her mothers cheek quickly, buttons up her jacket and walks outside to wait for the cab Haknyeon and Hyunjae were in.
She felt a little uneasy at the thought of sitting closely to Hyunjae. They hadn't really spoken much since Lia's birthday party, except from on the group chat - but it was a few weeks since the incident initially happened. The group didn't have much time to meet on the lead up to the holidays. Everyone working extra hours alongside having no money, so they decided instead of gifts, meeting for a meal and some drinks on Christmas Eve would suffice.
Heiji's train of thought is interrupted by a car beeping its horn in front of her.
"Hi guys," she says, opening the door and sitting beside Hyunjae. Of course. "Merry Christmas!"
"Wait until midnight," Haknyeon whines. "It isn't Christmas yet."
"It is technically Christmas though, just Eve," Hyunjae defends the girl, giving her a look from the side of his eye. "So, Merry Christmas guys."
The boy throws his arms over the two, embracing them in a light cuddle. Everything felt normal for the two, until both of their minds went back to that night.
Heiji hadn't told Haknyeon, which she felt terribly guilty about. It was just another thing she was letting herself be worried sick about, and she should have told Haknyeon to hear his opinion, it always made her feel better.
But they were drunk, these things happen - even though technically nothing happened. It was still something the both of them would continue to think about, until they addressed it. It wouldn't be Heiji addressing the matter, if that weren't obvious.
"I would like to announce something," Kevin smiles as he dramatically taps on his wine glass. "This is going to be the best Christmas for me, with my great friends and my even greater girlfriend."
The whole table fake gasps, everyone sarcastically shaking their heads saying "no way". Lia laughs loudly as Kevin looks offended and the jokes soon turn into a sea of "congratulations".
Heiji smiled, she felt somewhat proud of her little creation. She brought them together, it wasn't all down to her though, but she still felt proud. She grinned at the girl who sat in front of her with the biggest smile on her face.
"Bleugh," Haknyeon pretended to gag, as Lia threw a napkin over the table at him. "You two are adorable, we get it."
"Jealous ass," Kevin sticks out his tongue, taking a sip of his drink. "Merry Christmas guys, I'm thankful for each one of you, and I'm thankful for Heiji bringing us together."
"You're very welcome," she nods her head and laughs. "I couldn't be happier."
"We're glad, we all are," Jinsoul smiles genuinely at the girl, as Haknyeon's hand comes up to rub her back. He knew she would get emotional at her words, and she did. "Please don't cry, it's Christmas!"
Heiji laughs a little through the tears in her eyes, gosh, they barely said much and it triggered her emotions.
She stays like that for a while, looking around her group of friends and feeling grateful for all they had done for her these last couple of months. She barely notices Hyunjae's hand from the other side of her reaching up to rub her back, until she see's Haknyeon's head lean over to look at the boy. Their hand's must have touched.
He didn't say a word though, and neither did Hyunjae. He assumed it was just a simple act of kindness like he had done to the girl - but it was weird to see him be affectionate, he never was. But he shrugged it off. Heiji was upset, and he was comforting her, that was all.
"Thanks you two," the girl laughed, the boys lifting their hands. "I'm such a cry baby."
"I know, tell me about it." Haknyeon mutters jokingly as Hyunjae loudly laughs before Heiji lightly smacks both of them on their backs.
The waitress who had been serving them for the night came back to ask if the group wanted more drinks, and when she returned, she brought something with her.
"I see some lovely couples around the table tonight!" The lady smirks, dancing around the table jokingly as the group erupts in laughter. She pulls out a mistletoe from the pouch in her apron.
She lingers around Lia and Kevin, and everyone laughs and screams as she places the mistletoe above their heads. Kevin scrunches up his face, cringing. "This is so weird! Why!"
Everyone was too intoxicated and in high spirits to even acknowledge that the two were about to kiss in front of everyone, in fact - everyone cheered them on with laughter ringing in their ears.
Jinsoul and Sungyoon had already prepared for the small plant to be hung above their heads, in fact - they made a complete and utter show out of it. They dramatically led up to the kiss, leaving everyone in hysterics as they grabbed each other into a passionate, yet jokey kiss.
"Let's see who we have here," just as Heiji thought the lady was about to walk away, she approached her side of the table, despite Mia, Haknyeon, Heiji and Hyunjae waving their hands at the woman and saying no. "Don't feel pressured, this is all just a funny little game. Feel free to say no."
The group all laugh, sure it was good fun and a joke - but this was slightly uncomfortable for the four. Heiji specifically, as she sat between Haknyeon and Hyunjae, with Mia beside Hyunjae.
Haknyeon's face scrunches up when the both of them look up to see it dangled in front of their head, the whole table laughing at their faces, telling them to just do it. "Seriously?"
"Ahhh!" Heiji hides her face in embarrassment whilst laughing, she truthfully didn't want to kiss her best friend. Even a peck for being a good sport would still be slightly uncomfortable for her.
"I'll do it." Hyunjae shrugs, as the whole table looks shocked before laughing.
"Someone's eager," Haknyeon leans over to look at the boy. "But take her."
"Thanks a million, Hak!" Heiji smacks his arm jokingly, turning to face Hyunjae with the help of Haknyeon spinning her round quickly by turning the girls shoulders.
It was simply a repeat of Lia's birthday. Their faces were just as close, everything about the other looked the same.
However, Heiji wasted no time, she didn't want it to look too suspicious. She leaned in and pressed her lips to his, as he kissed her back gently. His hand almost reached to touch her shoulder, but Heiji pulled away quickly. They had already kissed for too long. "Merry Christmas."
"Yeah," Hyunjae breathed out, the girl facing away. "Merry Christmas."
"That was longer than a peck," Kevin announced to the table, earning laughs from most and a light smack on the arm from Lia. "That leaves two!"
Heiji laughs, looking over as Mia walks over to Haknyeon, placing a small peck on his lips before walking away. The two were close enough for that type of thing not too be too awkward. Despite him and Heiji being closest friends, it would have still been awkward and uncomfortable for the two to kiss. Their friendship wasn't a casual thing, it had real meaning and feeling.
However, with the way Heiji was starting to feel with Hyunjae looking at her from the corner of his eye, she wish she had just given Haknyeon a peck on the cheek. She now felt more uncomfortable than she thought.
"Well that was all a bit strange," Kevin announces again, the group all simultaneously taking a sip of their alcohol. "I mean, who does that?"
"Well when you come to an all adults bar and restaurant like this, it's kind of expected," Sungyoon points out. He had probably been to plenty more than anyone else here had. "Besides, she didn't force anyone. All in the Christmas spirit!"
When Heiji got home, she sat herself on the couch, pulling a blanket over her shoulders as she kicked her shoes off to the ground. The Christmas fairy lights were switched on, and she felt cosy. The clock was soon to strike midnight, and she felt like a child again with the excitement that built up inside her.
Except, she was a child with very adult feelings and problems.
Tonight, she could have said no. She didn't have to kiss Hyunjae. She didn't have to make things even more awkward.
She didn't have to kiss anyone when she wasn't over Sunwoo.
She closes her eyes, and thinks of all the times she had kissed him. Now, she regretted not kissing him more, holding him more. She never thought he'd be gone, and if she knew that - she would have never let him go in the first place.
The girl grows frustrated with herself, the mixture of anger and sadness took over her body and consequently, she ended up crying for the second time tonight.
She should have been spending Christmas with him. She should have been coming back home to him. She could even imagine the sight of him lying on the couch in front of her with the Christmas lights reflecting his gorgeous, tanned face, lighting up those big doe eyes.
"Where are you?" She barely whispers, almost coming out a whimper as the tears soaked the neckline of her dress, holding on tighter to the blanket.
The girl struggles to open her eyes wholly, too immersed in her emotional state and how comfortable she felt sitting upon the couch. Her eyes drift over to the decorated Christmas tree in the corner of the room.
She weakly stands up, wiping her ears with the sleeve of her dress, smudging her makeup down her face. If only Sunwoo could see her now.
Turning the Christmas tree, she searches for the object she had hidden out of her mothers sight when they were decorating the tree a few weeks ago.
She picks up the glass bauble, more tears gathering in her eyes as she lets out a small yelp and begins to sob.
S.H & K.SW
The girl breaks down on the floor. It was a breakdown which was well overdue. She hadn't cried over the situation enough, she hadn't thought about him enough - the way she should have. Sure, he broke her heart - but she didn't doubt that she broke his. And that killed her inside.
After weeks of fighting the tears, putting on a brave face and façade which she herself even began to believe - she needed to feel the hurt. The hurt was real.
Regaining her composure after a few minutes, she picked herself up off the floor and held the bauble securely in her hands, looking at their initials side-by-side, reminding herself of the good times she had with him.
"It's just another day without you," she wipes her tears, breathing in, aiming to reassure herself. "I can do it."
(A/N; ngl... I felt really sad writing this. Heartbreak isn't easy or nice. I hope none of you ever have to experience such a thing.. <3)
