chapter thirty five
Third Person POV
It had only grown colder these last few weeks which threw Heiji's limited outfit options for the night out of the window. She didn't want to look too bulky, or wear something that wasn't warm enough and she'd catch a cold.
"Is this okay?" She asks her mother, who was standing at the door watching as her daughter ran around frantically.
"Yes, sweetheart," she smiles, laughing lightly at the girls state. "You look lovely."
"I trust you, birth-giver," Heiji points to her, sighing before looking in the mirror one last time. She wore jeans and a long sleeved patterned top, nothing too fancy but the fact it covered her neck was assuring that she wouldn't end up with the flu. "Ready to go."
She picks up her bag, checking for her belongings, putting on her winter coat and proceeds towards the stairs as her mother closely followed.
Her mother was heading to work, so she decided to drop her off at the place she was meeting Sangyeon. Typically, her mother would have had particular views about her daughter dating her manager - then she remembers the men she dated at her age too.
"You know," her mother starts, looking over at her daughter in the passenger seat. "You're like me, you like the older men."
"Mother!" Heiji laughs.
"It's true," she laughs with her, her laughter slowing down as she spoke again. "Your father was five years older than me."
A deafening silence fell over the two. It was rare they spoke about him, but both of the women were highly emotional - they would inevitably cry at the mention of his name.
"I miss him," Heiji says quietly, looking out the window whilst attempting to blink back her tears. She inhales deeply before turning to her mother. "Besides, this guy is only two years older. Not a great difference."
"Still older," her mother points out, her eyes were glossy too. "More experience."
"Don't be so disgusting," Heiji laughs, shoving her mother's arm lightly.
"I'm glad you're getting yourself back out there," she says suddenly, and Heiji felt bittersweet. She was glad too, but she was still nervous. This date meant she was fully attempting to move on, and that was scary.
"Me too," she half-lies, looking out the window. "Just on the left here, mother."
"This part of town?" Her mother looks amazed, the sparkling lights and busy atmosphere made the place look expensive - which it was. "I see a handsome man."
Heiji looks over to where her mother was smirking towards, seeing Sangyeon standing casually outside the bar. He looked incredible, even something her mother couldn't deny, watching as he stood there graciously with his smart clothes on.
"Wipe your drool, mother," Heiji ruffled her mother's hair before opening the car door. "I'll see you in the morning."
"Have fun!"
The girl makes her way towards the boy, the slamming of the car door behind her made him look up and see her, making him instantly smile. It was rare to see her look like this, although the uniform didn't look terrible on her. I guess the person makes the clothes.
"Hi," Heiji bows lightly to him, before he pulls her in for a small hug.
"Hey," he says pulling away from the embrace. "You look great, Heiji."
"Thank you," the girl blushed, looking at the busy bar that was beside them. "Is this the place?"
"Sure is."
The girl almost gasped as they reached the door, the place was bustling with people who all seemed to be having a great time. The doors were rimmed with gold and the place seemed rather extravagant. The girl worried that she wouldn't be able to afford drinks in somewhere so lavish. Of course, it was common courtesy of the man - but she didn't feel like that was always entirely fair.
"Sangyeon," Heiji turns around to face him. "This place looks expensive."
"Looks expensive," he repeats. "The prices aren't terrible. It just has that exterior."
Heiji felt relieved, everyone in the place did look around their age range, and had that student-type vibe. She didn't care about the cost too much, she just wanted to have a nice night.
Which she seemed to be having. The two were on their third drink, which took away the air of awkwardness that had arisen the moment they sat down. Heiji feared they didn't have much to talk about, they knew a bit about each other, but it seemed to fade the more drunk she got.
"Why didn't you just leave the company?" Heiji asks, swirling the remaining alcohol left her in her glass.
"I couldn't," Sangyeon sighs. "I enjoy working there. It isn't ideal or the job I want forever, but I need the managerial experience. Besides, working with great people does help."
"Why thank you," Heiji pretends to flip her hair, giving the boy a smile.
"I mean," Sangyeon starts, before looking up at her. "Eric's great fun."
"Shut up," Heiji playfully pushes his arm from across the table. "Eric is a pain in the ass, I do weirdly love him for it though."
Sangyeon let's out a hearty laugh, "same - it's a strange relationship I have with him."
Heiji laughs, quickly downing the rest of her drink as the man watched her. She raised an eyebrow at him as he stared at her.
"Not the strangest relationship I have with one of my employees, however."
Heiji felt the heat rush to her cheeks almost immediately. She wasn't sure if it was the mans words or the fact he currently looked more handsome than ever. Or both.
"Stop that," she says shyly, looking at his empty glass. "Would you like another?"
"Another what?"
"Drink."
"Not another date?"
He challenges her, Heiji almost letting out a loud snicker at his cockiness, it made him all the more attractive - but sadly it reminded her of Sunwoo and his joking egotistic charms.
The girl hadn't realised how long she had stayed silent for until she noticed he blinked and got closer. "I'll think about it."
"Oh really?" Sangyeon let's out a laugh. "See how you feel after the next drink."
"I'll be floored, my judgement will be clouded," the girl says jokingly and dramatically, pressing a light hand to her forehead. But truthfully, she couldn't give an answer just yet.
"I can wait."
Although he lived at the other side of town, Sangyeon insisted in taking a cab with her to ensure she would arrive home safely, which was kind of him.
Heiji couldn't shake the thoughts of Sunwoo, and it was driving her mad.
Little things, manly mannerisms were enough to make her thoughts be full of him. Even looking into Sangyeon's eyes made her think of how she would have preferred Sunwoo's.
It made her feel wrong for enjoying her time with the man, she questioned what things would be like after this date.
He did ask her on another, but truthfully she didn't know if she could. Maybe this date tonight was a step too far. She needed to backtrack in order to move on properly and efficiently, without hurting anyone or herself in the process.
"Just here, sir," Heiji says as the cab pulls into her street. "Thank you for tonight, Sangyeon."
"My pleasure," the man smiles, reaching out to take her hand and kiss it gently in the process. "I'll see you next week?"
"Yeah," Heiji smiles back, retracting her hand and exiting the car, taking one last look at Sangyeon and waving as they drove away.
She sighed, standing in front of the darkness of her home before tapping her head.
"What is wrong with you?" She says to herself, sighing as she begins to walk down the pathway to her house.
However, something shiny catches her eye in an unusual place on the decking in the front of her house. It truthfully creeped her out, but she didn't know what else to do except walk forward.
Until she realised it was a balloon.
A balloon. With "I'm sorry" written upon it.
"What the fuck?" She grabbed the string of the balloon, taking a closer inspection to see if there was any sort of note attached or something of the sort. She wondered if it was for her mother - but then again, who would it be?
A light cough startles Heiji, her letting out a small yelp as she turned to where the noise came from.
"Hi."
