chapter thirty eight

Third Person POV

It had been days since Heiji last seen Sunwoo, and ever since - her thoughts were running in circles.

The guilt she felt for what happened between her and Hyunjae only grew stronger. Seoho didn't know about the two, he could find out at any minute, and so could Sunwoo. She already felt bad enough that Sunwoo thought something was going on between them.

As for Sunwoo, every night he lay awake restless, wondering if the chase for the girl was worth it anymore.

He had seen her with Hyunjae, and although she told him nothing was going on, a part of him refused to believe it. It must have been him that night, but then who was the man from her work? Where was she, and who was she with the night she kissed him?

He had chased her before, he had been relentless in trying to win her over, even though he knew it was wrong - he wondered if it was her time to chase him. Although, he couldn't bare to think about moving on with anyone else, so how could she?

He thought it had been too easy for the girl. The thought of being anyone other than her made his stomach turn. So, he decided it was best to stay out of her way, for now. Until she could fully see the extent to which she had also hurt him, he would stay away completely. And if she loved him the way he loved her, she would find him.

For now, it was a waiting game. However, Heiji was contemplating whether talking to Sunwoo again would be a good idea.

"Do you still have his number?" Haknyeon asks from across the table.

"I do, but I don't think he uses that one anymore," Heiji sighs. Haknyeon had met her on her lunch break, where she told him about what happened last Saturday night. "At least not since he left."

"I mean," he takes a sip of water. "He isn't exactly wrong about you and Hyunjae."

"He doesn't need to know about that," the girl speaks firmly, almost as though she is reassuring herself.

"Why are you so phased about whether he finds out or not?"

His question threw Heiji off a little, why did she care? They weren't together at the time, they never were.

"You never done anything wrong," the boy argues. "You should only be caring if you're planning to get him back, he might find it strange you guys are still good friends. Do you want him back?"

Heiji looks nervously at the boy who then rolled his eyes at her. "I don't know, Hak. I know how I feel for him and that's all. After the other night, it doesn't seem like he wants me again."

"That's probably because he was hurt seeing the girl he loved holding hands and laughing with another boy," he points out, making the girl sigh again. "It would hurt you if you seen him being that close with someone else. Just try consider being in his position."

"I done that for months, Hak. I tried to put myself in his shoes," she argues back.

"You can try thinking like someone else but you'll never see the whole picture through their eyes," he raises an eyebrow. "You just have to be a little more considerate. You've both hurt each other, Heiji, and I know that's not what you want to hear - but it hasn't been all him."

The girl looks up at his almost judging eyes, before taking a deep breath. "I can't tell if you're on my side or his."

"It isn't about sides," the boy says gently. "I'm your best friend, it's my job to make sense of some things to you. If you really want him back, I'm not wholly against it - I just don't want you walking into things thinking that you've been the only victim here because it'll ruin things in the long run. If you want him back - you need to talk to him about how he's feeling."

Heiji lets out another sigh, she knew what she had to do, she just found it hard to hear. But she realised, after today, that she would have to get used to it if she really wanted the boy in her life.

When the last class of the day finished, Heiji was first out of the classroom door, wandering aimlessly around the halls. She knew he was back, but where could he be? Would he even be here yet? Was he even in classes today?

Her mind tried to comb back through old conversations, the boys interests outside of his soccer, in an attempt to figure out what corridor he could be down.

She never knew where the boy lived, so that was useless.

An idea struck, however, as she began to lightly jog through the crowds of people and make her way to the carpark, trying to spot Sunwoo's car.

By the time she found it, she could hear chatter heading in her direction, as she tried to look casual hanging around a car which wasn't hers.

"Hey," she heard the boys voice speak lightly, as she turned to face him beside a girl of a similar age to the two. She was gorgeous, with long dark hair and large piercing eyes, Heiji instantly felt intimidated by her beauty, and also insanely jealous. "What are you doing here?"

"Hi," Heiji bows to the girl who throws her a smile and bows her head politely back to her. "I was hoping to speak to you, but it's not a big deal, I can catch you another time."

Sunwoo looks between the two girls, awkwardly shuffling. "Sooyoung, could you wait in the car for a few minutes?"

"Sure," the girl smiles, looking towards Heiji. "It was nice to meet you."

Her delicate voice and beautiful features made Heiji's heart sink, besides the fact she was currently getting in Sunwoo's car. She finally felt the same burning feeling in the pit of her stomach that she imagined Sunwoo might have had when he seen her and Hyunjae, both times.

"You alright?" The boy asks casually, although it was all an act.

"Yeah," Heiji stutters, before taking a deep breath and regaining her ability to speak. "I just wanted to tell you..."

Heiji trails off, turning to see the pretty girl sat in the passenger side of the boys car. He follows her eyes as her words disappeared. "Tell me what?"

"Me and Hyunjae, uh," she struggles to look back at the boy, her heart felt like it was in her stomach and her nerves were almost shattered. "We're just friends. I don't know if you believed me when I said, but we are."

"Okay," the boy nods slowly in an attempt to keep up the casual demeanour he was portraying, but his heart felt happy at her words. "Thanks for telling me."

"Yeah," Heiji nods, she wasn't sure how much her words meant to him now that he was seemingly moving on. "That was all."

"Okay," he repeats, giving the girl a small smile as he noticed her nerves. "Well, I've got to take Sooyoung home."

"Okay sure," she forces a smile. "I'll see you around, then."

"I'm sorry," Sunwoo says softly before the girl walks away. "I'm sorry for how jealous I came across. I know that isn't something you like, I just couldn't help it. I hope you understand that."

Heiji's eyes meet the boys. "I do understand," she looks towards the passenger seat where the girl was still sitting, she understood more than ever now. "I'm sorry if it seems like I don't, or if it seems I 'play the victim'."

The boys words from that night still stung Heiji, because she knew after her talk today with Haknyeon, that maybe they could be true.

"I didn't mean it like that," the boy moves closer to her, watching as her eyes turned sad. "You know I didn't."

"It's okay if you did," Heiji inhales, trying to appear confident with her words although she was pretty upset. "I see that now. I'm sorry for hurting you, Sunwoo."

He looks between her eyes which had appeared to become glossy as she spoke the words, and he wanted nothing but to embrace her and tell her to forget about everything, but he knew he couldn't. He was just glad he had finally heard her apologise after he had numerous times.

"I better get going," the girl puts on a brave face. "You have to take her home, so."

"You know her name," Sunwoo lightly giggles at the jealousy that had dripped from her words.

"Yeah, I do," Heiji laughs softly, before whispering, "I don't think I'll forget it."

Heiji gives the boy one last smile, before turning away and walking towards the gates again. The last look at the boy she prepared to be the last, considering another girl sat in the seat where she felt she belonged. She felt replaced, and she couldn't do anything about it.

"Heiji?" The boy shouted from beside his car.

"Hmm?" She half turned, not mentally prepared to see his face again since she had already assumed it would be the last.

"She's my cousin."

He throws her a small smile, before opening the door and getting into the car. Heiji stands there frozen, before lifting her palm and hitting it against her forehead. She watches as the two drive by, giving her a small wave and a smile. She wondered if they were laughing at her stupidity - because she knew she would have been too.

However, for the first time, she had experienced the type of jealousy she had caused to other people, and things became suddenly more clear - she would have to work harder to get a boy like Sunwoo back.
