chapter sixty five
Third Person POV
Heiji chewed her lip as she sat down across from the man, the whole situation was a bit too formal for her liking.
"What's wrong?" She asked with confidence, although she was lacking.
Hyunjae looked up at her, something sparkled in his eyes but Heiji couldn't tell these days if it was the usual twinkle of admiration or something worse. "Are you going to the wedding?"
"Yes," she nods her head slowly. "Why, aren't you?"
"I can't," he says simply, looking rather sad. "They want me to take the class on a trip that whole week, I can't even refuse."
"Why can't another teacher take them?" Heiji asks, her words trailing off followed by a sigh.
"I can't let a biology teacher take my physics class," he shakes his head. "Then my work and teaching for the year would be down the drain."
"It's just a trip?" Heiji shrugs, her words sounding more like a question.
"Think of it as physics camp," Hyunjae chuckles. "I wouldn't be back until the Friday night. I can't fly to Canada for the Saturday, I'd practically miss everything."
"Shit," she drops her head as the man sighs. "I'm sorry, Hyunjae."
"I'm the sorry one," he says sadly. "You're lucky you got cover for that day."
"I am," Heiji chuckles. "But don't be sorry or feel bad, it isn't your fault. I'm sure they'll understand that it can't be helped. They knew having a wedding in Canada that people would find it more difficult to be there."
"I guess," the man shrugs. "I still feel bad."
"I told you it can't be helped," Heiji reiterates, as the man looks up at her.
"I feel bad for you, having to go without me," he pouts dramatically, making Heiji chuckle.
"I don't know how I'll survive," she places a hand on her forehead, and one clutching her heart.
She walked by the table, walking towards the classroom door to pop next door to place her lunch dishes in the washer, but the man snaked a hand around her waist, attempting to pull her down towards him.
"Hyunjae," Heiji swatted his hand, truthfully making the man disappointed although the whole thing seemed a joke, like fun. "Someone could see."
"No ones there," he shrugs, his hand still on her waist. She reluctantly leans down to kiss his head before pulling away, making him sigh.
He watched as she walked away so casually, as though she didn't know she was breaking his heart.
He couldn't deny that things were different, although she remained remotely affectionate and she never verbally announced anything was different.
But what did he expect, when getting involved with a married woman whose husband had vanished?
That didn't mean her feelings had vanished with him.
"I need you to know something," Heiji says over the video call to Kevin. "And you have to promise not to say anything."
"What is that?" He tilts his head curiously.
"I won't be attending the wedding with Hyunjae, as you know," she coughs. "I think Sunwoo wants to attend."
Kevin stays silent for a minute, trying to process the woman's words. "So, he's coming as your date?"
"Yeah, I guess," she shrugs. "Everyone knows he's back, I guess since we're still legally married, it isn't all that weird."
"I guess," Kevin nods, still looking rather confused. "I hope he isn't upset about not getting an invite. It wasn't that I didn't invite him, I just didn't know how to contact him."
"He knows," Heiji smiles. "I need a favour, though."
"And that is?"
"Can you keep the photos with him in it to yourself?" She asks, biting her bottom lip.
"Why is that?" He looks at the woman intently through the lens. "Who doesn't know about him being back?"
"W-What?" Heiji stutters as the man begins to chuckle.
"I'm guessing you haven't told Hyunjae," he nods somewhat understandingly. "I get it, Heiji. I'll try my best to exclude him in photos."
"I'm not sure he'll even want photos of himself taken," Heiji blurts. "He is looking rather ill, if I say so."
"You've been seeing him, then?" Kevin asks curiously.
"Not like that," Heiji lies. "I guess, this is still his home, he pops by now and then."
"Just so conveniently when Hyunjae isn't there?"
The woman stays silent, watching as Kevin began to chuckle on the screen, making her feel nervous. She didn't want the man to think any different of her, but she supposed that would be inevitable.
"Don't worry Heiji," he says softly. "I'm not judging you. I really love Lia, I can put myself in your shoes to some extent. I'd never stop loving her, even if she done the worst possible thing to me."
"It's shit," Heiji shakes her head, laughing a little. "It's so amazing to love but it's so shit how we will love regardless."
"That's what your vows are for," Kevin chuckles. "Are you alright for me to pass this on to Lia, just so we can make sure everything goes smoothly on the day for you?"
"Of course," Heiji nods repeatedly. "I'm missing her. You also shouldn't be worrying about making things go smoothly for me, I'm really asking too much here."
"She can't wait to see you," Kevin smiles. "We love you, Heiji, I hope you're not working yourself up too much like I know you can do."
The woman smiles, nodding at him reassuringly. "I'll try not to."
"Just come and enjoy the wedding, let all your worries go," he smiles. "It feels surreal being the accomplice in an affair - I never thought I would be."
"I wish people would stop saying that!" Heiji chuckles, although she knew it was true. "My situation is exceptional."
"Exactly," Kevin nods. "I wouldn't agree to this otherwise, but for my friend and the man who chose me to be his best man - I'll do it."
"Love you," Heiji blows a kiss. "Oh, who is your best man?"
"I hope Sunwoo isn't offended," Kevin shakes his head. "But it's a friend I made here in Canada, he's great. Ideally I would have wanted Sunwoo, but he was off the radar."
"Quite literally," Heiji chuckles. "He won't be offended, Kevin. He'll just be happy to be coming, and to see you."
"And to see you in a pretty dress," the man wriggles his eyebrows making the woman blush. "She ain't even deny it either."
"What can I say?" She flips her hair, the two laughing. "He loves me."
"And you love him," Kevin nods, awaiting the girls response as she simply nodded sheepishly. "Cute."
After texting Hyunjae to tell him she couldn't hang out at either of their places, Heiji simply did nothing - unlike the text she sent, which detailed how stressed she was about marking students papers and having a lot on her plate.
She felt guilty for lying to the man, she loved him and respected him enough to be conscious of her actions.
But it didn't seem to stop her, and it was all because of him.
The man who's picture lay on the fireplace. She wondered why Hyunjae didn't kick up a fuss at the sight of it, but that showed her how respectful he was. And only made her feel more guilty.
But, again, it wouldn't stop her.
Her phone lit up again, this time with a text from Sunwoo, to which he asked if they could hang out. She instantly began to type, yet refrained from sending so quickly.
He chuckled at her attempt, noticing she was typing and sitting on the reply, so he texted her to say he knew she was on the chat waiting.
And within the half an hour, Sunwoo appeared at her doorstep. Their doorstep.
"Hi," he smiled, as Heiji reached for his arm and gently pulled him inside. "Is this the part where you kiss me and lure me to the bedroom?"
"If you want that you can just say so," she shrugs, sending the man a grin. "Hi."
"You're happy," Sunwoo tilts his head, smiling back at her. "What's gotten into you?"
"Can't I be happy to see you?"
Her words made Sunwoo's heart flutter, seeing how happy she currently was and her declaring it was due to him - was all he wanted to hear for the rest of his life, however long that may be.
"I'm happy to see you, too," he smiles down at her. "I'm glad I can see you tonight."
"We see each other a lot," Heiji points out as he follows her to the living room.
"Not enough," Sunwoo shakes his head, as she turns to face him. "I want to see you every minute of every day."
"Ew," Heiji sticks out her tongue. "That isn't possible."
"But if it was," he chuckles, sitting down beside her. "Then I would. Besides, I've told you before, I want to spend my last days with you."
"Stop," Heiji shakes her head, scrunching her eyes - the same reaction she had every time he remotely brought up something about his death.
"I know you don't like to talk about it," he sighs. "But it's reality, Heiji."
The two cuddled for a while, their bodies lazily entangled on the couch in front of the fire, Sunwoo's free hand clasped with Heiji's as the other was threw around her shoulder.
The movie playing was a great distraction for the thoughts racing through the woman's mind. She felt so secure and warm within the arms of the man she loved, that she had to swallow the constant lump in her throat that appeared whenever she remembered it wasn't forever.
"What are you thinking about?" Sunwoo whispers, noticing her eyes diverted from the film every now and again.
She didn't answer, simply attempting to wipe her mind of any sad thoughts.
"Heiji," he spoke a little louder, letting go of her hand to turn her face towards his, to which she shifted her whole body so she was lying face-to-face with him. "What's wrong?"
"I don't want a divorce anymore," she spoke shakily as the man looked shocked. "Fuck, that's the last thing I want."
He watched as she began to cry into the blanket, his heart ached and he could only hold her closer. "It's okay, Heiji."
"I want," she chokes out, pulling her head up to look at him. "I want you here forever."
"I will be," he nods, cupping her face in his hands. "Even if not physically, I'll always be with you Heiji."
"I hate being with you and feeling like I need to stop myself from getting too comfortable," she blurts. "I need to remind myself that this isn't forever, and it scares me, Sunwoo."
"It was never going to be forever," he speaks softly as she continued to cry. "One of us was going one day."
"Not until we were old," she shakes her head in his hands. "It isn't supposed to be like this."
"You're telling me," he chuckles, the girl letting out a shaky smile as she sniffled. "I need you to do one thing for me, okay?"
"Anything," she speaks without hesitation, looking into the mans eyes with admiration that made him feel almost overwhelmed, yet so loved.
"I need you to let go of those thoughts, okay?" He speaks gently, calming the girls nerves. "I need you to love me as though each day is the last."
"Don't say that."
"I'm being serious, Heiji," he says sternly. "When I die, I want my last memory with you to be amazing, to be fun. You'll be the only person I think of when I see the light, okay?"
"Stop," Heiji only cries harder, the man not letting go of her face although she squirmed in his touch. "Stop, please."
"Can you promise you'll love me?" He wipes away her tears as her breathing only became harsher.
She stares at him for a while, looking between the eyes she loved more than anything that ever existed, and she knew her answer. For him, she would do anything.
"Until death do us part."
