chapter four

Third Person POV

The start of the following week, Heiji decided to start her week differently to how she had been doing it every other week. Sunwoo's words really affected her, although she didn't want to admit it. She did not know Sunwoo properly enough to be taking such words he said about her friends to heart, she knew she should have defended Seoho. Why did she care what Sunwoo thought?

Sunwoo had obviously spent time with Seoho both on and off the pitch, but it was no where near as much time and she had spent with him. She never considered him boring, maybe blunt in certain social situations, but that was just him and his introverted character. That was something she and all of her friend group admired about him, it was funny at most times.

She wandered aimlessly around campus, it was a Tuesday which meant no Kevin or Jinsoul today, they had taken separate tutorial classes from her. She was never usually too fussed about being alone, but being alone with her hectic thoughts, waiting for the clock to hit 2pm so she could actually do work to keep herself sane - was a different thing altogether.

Heiji grabbed a sandwich and a bottle of juice from the cafeteria.

"Sitting in today, Miss Heiji?" Asked Maria, the canteen lady. Heiji's mind went elsewhere as she handed over her money, and she found herself shaking her head, taking the food and leaving the tray with Maria, apologising quickly as she strode out of the lunch area.

She looked like a woman on a mission, and she felt completely out of her mind. However, she knew where she wanted to go. It was a nice day and it was a perfect excuse to go to the place her legs were taking her to.

She found the perfect bench, looking around before sitting and taking out the book she needs to read ahead of her next class.

Her eyes drifted to the soccer field. She didn't quite know who she was looking for, but she was looking for sure, and that was enough to concern her. She didn't realise the one she was actually looking for wasn't yet on the field, as she felt his presence behind her.

"Damn, and I called Seoho boring?"

She wanted to roll her eyes, make a sassy comment and tell him to go away, but she was more so shocked that a weight came off her chest and she found herself no longer looking towards the soccer field and instead into Sunwoo's eyes.  Once she finally composed herself, she retorted "I'm sorry, can I help you?"

"You just never sit out here." He says, sitting next to her, too close for her liking, or Seoho's.

He had clocked the sight before him when one of his teammates asked what was taking Sunwoo so long, and another replied that he was too busy "flirting with a geek". Seoho didn't rush to defend Heiji, partly because he didn't want the football team to think Sunwoo was stealing Seoho's girl, because deep down he knew he could if he tried. Also, partly because his jealousy over the sight he seen before him stopped him being able to project any words he really wanted to say. To Seoho, it was strange, Sunwoo never noticed her before - so why now?

"I was wanting to watch Seoho practice for once, I've never seen the university team in action," she somewhat lies. "And perfect lighting for my book, see?"

She holds the book at an angle, as Sunwoo makes a goofy face at her. "Nerd."

"Nice bench too."

"I'm sure that's why," he smirks, but Heiji is too busy looking at Seoho who waves at her from the pitch. She can't see his miserable facial expression from this far, but she tells herself that he is what she came here for. "Do you ever have fun, Heiji?"

Her eyes go wide as she turns to face him, unsure of what he means and unsure of what to say. "Didn't you see me have fun last weekend with my friends?"

He scoffs, "sure, weekends are supposed to be fun if you're not working. What about your weekdays though? Do you just study, wait for your next shift to come around, wait until Seoho texts and offers to come watch a movie with you?"

"No," she bites back almost immediately after he stops talking, he smirks again. "I'm not a teenager anymore Sunwoo, I can't fuck around and mess my first year at university up, and neither should you."

He nods slowly at her, trying not to let a smile creep on to his face. He wondered how someone could be so politely spoken, innocently and beautifully faced, yet so fierce and abrupt at the same time. It was nothing like he had ever seen before in any other girl, and Sunwoo had known lots - so he knew he should be worried, or stay away from her. But he wasn't going to do that.

"Well, mum," he playfully teases her for her last comment, "if you ever want to have real fun, you know where to find me, evidently."

He begins to slowly walk away, turning around every so often to see if her face has changed from the shocked state it was in when he said those words. He didn't quite know what he meant when he said that, but he knew if she came asking for an adventure he would go with her. And that's when he realised he had more problems on his hands, such as his girlfriend.

"And what would your girlfriend think about that?" Heiji questions, her heart picking up pace and her palms beginning to sweat. I guess it does happen, sometimes.

That was when he realised he had more problems than he initially thought he did. Not only did he have the problem of Seoho in the picture, he also had Jiwoo in the picture. He turned around, slowly walking towards Heiji and again reaching down so only she could hear.

"And what would your boyfriend think about you coming here to watch me, and not him?"

-----------------

After the game, Sunwoo felt both physically and mentally drained, which was unusual for him. His mind was running in circles whilst he literally was. Why couldn't he shake the desire to chase after Heiji, even though he knew how wrong it was? He had only properly met her a week ago, but he already felt stronger towards her than he did to his girlfriend in 6 months.

The truth was, it wasn't an excuse, but he was never happy with Jiwoo. She never forced him to be with her or anything of the sort, he felt somewhat superior to all the other boys in his friend group if he bagged her before any of them could even get the chance. She was pretty, a bitch, but a pretty one at that.

Around him, she was sweet, most of the time, but controlling and demeaning the other times. She couldn't move past the fact that Sunwoo used to be a player in his teenage years, it made her not trust him. He could understand why, but he was younger then, he was influenced by the same people sure, but they were all young immature boys then.

This lack of trust showed a lot within even the first month of them dating, and it should have been a sign for Sunwoo to get out as quickly as he could, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. He felt that his past and his reputation was something that only he could fix, it was his fault after all. He had to prove to her that he wasn't like that anymore.

Had he not been so dumb in high school, he could have been friends with more guys like Hyunjae, as opposed to Changmin and Juyeon. He also could have had a chance with a girl like Heiji much sooner, but now a guy like Seoho has her, and admittedly, he believed he deserved her more than he ever did.

Sunwoo was so desperate for Heiji to see that he had changed, partly because the very girl he had chosen could not, and it was making his life hell.

His parents didn't approve of Jiwoo, they believed her to be emotionally manipulative, and they seen the effects of their relationship on their son. The fact that his parents didn't approve was enough to turn Sunwoo completely off from her.

No matter how much he replayed the toxic memories they shared in his head, he knew he was wrong for pursuing Heiji when he was tied down to someone else. The only positive is he knew he had even more of a reason to get himself out of the relationship with her. He just wondered if Heiji would do the same with Seoho.

----------------

Wednesday night shifts were arguably the worst shifts out of the whole week, the only positive being that Heiji could go home and stay up as late as she wished as she didn't have classes the next day, and the more sleep for Heiji, the better.

The store was a short distance from her home, but she would always take a safer detour when walking home at night to keep herself safe. It was rare in her area to see any trouble at this time of night, but she knew it wasn't impossible. She crossed the road, running as the car engines started to rev a little louder - she must have misjudged the length of time left on the green man. Close one.

Heiji walked past the busy row of shops which were all shutting as the clock struck 10pm, some bars and restaurants staying opened. She seen the small café-bar she was at last weekend, and wondered if Kevin was working. Not only Kevin, though, but she ignored that thought and convinced herself that she only wanted to see Kevin.

As she passed the store, she walked a bit slower, looking to see some staff folding away chairs and tables in the outside area, but no sign of Kevin.

"Looking for me again? Didn't I warn you about that?" Sunwoo laughed from the seat of his car, parked right beside where Heiji was standing. She sighed, rolling her eyes, turning around to see his smug expression in the drivers seat. "Do you need a lift home?"

"It's probably best I don't get in a car with you, anyone could see us, and besides - I don't live that far."

"I know where you live, and its definitely not on this route," he answers back, opening the passenger seat window a little further. "You either don't feel safe walking the back roads, or you wanted to see me, or both - so I suggest you get in."

Heiji is about to speak, and truthfully, enter the passenger seat, when she hears someone running towards her. "What are you doing here?"

"I was gonna come meet you when you finished work, I wasn't sure which way you were going," Seoho smiles and Heiji smiles back, she felt bad that he was running the streets to find her. "Why did you come this way?"

"I-I didn't feel safe going the other way, I usually come this way if I finish at 10pm..." Heiji trailed off, as Seoho turned to look in the car parked beside them.

"Oh hey man, I can give you guys a lift somewhere if you want?" Sunwoo asked innocently, Seoho looks back at me as though he is considering it.

"I wouldn't mind a lift to be honest," he shrugs. "I'm kind of tired from running about."

"Hop in."

Seoho sat in the front with Sunwoo, Heiji in the backseat behind Seoho. She felt uneasy, being in a confined space with two boys who made her feel very different things. She wondered why Seoho accepted the lift, why he came all this way to see her but no longer wanted to walk with her. The truth was, Seoho knew, after that weekend, that the route Heiji takes would allow Sunwoo another chance to talk to her. He let his jealousy take over and decided to see it for himself, and he was right.

When they got to Heijis street, Sunwoo eyed Heiji in the rear-view mirror, "is this the right house?"

He knew fine well it was, but he hadn't spoken a word to her since she got in the car, so he felt like he needed some sort of interaction to keep himself a bit sane, with the jealous lover in his passenger seat - it was a risky game to say anymore than he did. "Yeah, thank you Sunwoo."

As they exited the car, Heiji took one last look at Sunwoo before waving as he drove off. She and Seoho sat on her porch stairs and chatted about their days. Heiji didn't suspect a thing about Seoho's unexpected appearance tonight, and he was glad she didn't.

"We'll need to plan another date soon," Seoho said, eyeing the girl. He didn't want her slipping away. It was selfish, but he had liked her too long to lose her to someone like Sunwoo. "If you'd like?"

"Sure," Heiji smiled and laughed, "a mate date."

She was teasing him, for how shit he made her feel when he said that to her the first time. However, a part of her actually meant those words.

He glanced over at her, laughing slightly, before inching closer to her face. Heijis breath stalled in her throat as he reached over and connected their lips. It was brief, Heiji barely had the chance to close her eyes. She was shocked.

"I'll see you on Friday at some point, yeah?" Seoho smiled down at her, as she nodded. She couldn't quite process what he had just done.

"B-Bye."

She stayed like that for a while, watching Seoho disappear down the street. She felt a bit odd receiving a peck on the lips from someone who supposedly liked her so much, she thought there would've been more than that. She was also thankful, however, that it wasn't more than that. Even though it was brief, she felt next to nothing, apart from the initial adrenaline of having someone so beautiful close to her face.

As she stood up to enter the house, she glanced over to see Sunwoo's car parked the next house down, smartly - the opposite direction of where Seoho was going. Sunwoo had drove around the block, and came back just on time to see the pathetic kiss Seoho gave her. He knew if he ever had the chance, he would give her the passionate kiss a girl like her deserves.

She strides over to the car, chapping on the window although he is already looking at her, smirking. He presses his lips up to the drivers window, planting a peck on the condensation. Heiji can't help but giggle at this, but still feel frustrated that he was hanging around.

"What are you doing here?" She asks, as he puts the window down to show his beautiful tanned face which reflected perfectly in the moonlight. He seemed almost too good to be true.

"I was planning on taking you somewhere before that loser stepped in," he says seriously, before putting on an innocent, cute face. "The offer is still there, he's gone now."
