chapter fifty six

Third Person POV

"Heiji, I want you to go and enjoy yourself," Sunwoo insists as he pathetically tries to drag the girl from off of the couch. "Please, will you go, for me?"

"You could just say you want rid of me," Heiji replies. Although she was joking, the two felt a sense of seriousness in her words.

Partly because it was true, on Sunwoo's part. He wanted that time to himself, but he wanted her to enjoy herself more than he wanted that free time.

"You know I don't," he argues back. "You said it yourself, we've had no time to do anything apart from worry about my health. This will be good for you."

"But what will you do if I'm not here?" Heiji asks, earning a scoff from the man, to which she raised her eyebrow, unimpressed.

"I'm not a child Heiji, I don't need constant supervision," he blurts, making the girls face turn more sour.

"If we're talking like that," she starts, getting up off the couch. "Then I guess I won't need to call a baby sitter for you tonight."

"You know I didn't mean it like that," he sighs as she walks past him.

"There isn't another way you could have meant it," she turns to face him. "I was only trying to help."

"I know," he sighs as she stands in the doorway, crossing her arms at him. "Are you going, then?"

"It's evident I'm not wanted here tonight. I'll give you your space."

"Why are you being like this?" He follows her as she headed towards the stairs.

"I'm only reacting this way based on the signs you're giving me," she justifies. "And I'm trying not to take offence to it. You need your space, and that's fine. But spare the sarcastic comments."

Sunwoo huffs, annoyed at himself but also at the whole situation. It was unlike the two to argue, and it was hurting him as much as it was hurting her.

He followed her to the room, as she flung off her pyjamas and raided the wardrobe for something to wear, stopping to pick up her phone to text Yuqi about meeting her beforehand.

"How will you get there?" He asks, sitting on the bed, watching as she got herself dressed.

"I'll meet Yuqi," she says bluntly. "And then we'll go together."

"I can give you a ride," he insists, earning a look from the woman over her naked shoulder. "If you want?"

"You can't drive, Sunwoo," she shakes her head, which only made Sunwoo sigh even louder. "What is it?"

"I'm trying here," he shakes his head, standing up and ready to leave the room. "You won't even let me take you."

Heiji huffs, turning to face the boy as he glued his eyes to the girls face instead of her body, which was still difficult despite their fighting. "You think I'm purposely rejecting your offer? You haven't driven in months, Sunwoo. We don't even know if you're capable of doing so safely yet."

"I won't know unless I try," he bites his bottom lip, chewing anxiously on it as Heiji tilted her head.

"What is this really about?" She could read the man like a book after all these years.

"Nothing," he shakes his head, looking at the door as he prepared to leave again.

"It's about him, isn't it?" She asks, shaking her head and letting out a laugh as the boy narrowed his eyes at her.

"I'm glad you find it amusing," he says sarcastically. "Don't I have the right to be worried about him?"

"What exactly are you worrying about?"

"The guys in love with you, that's enough to worry about!" He throws his hand up in the air, one coming up to his head to steady the dizzy spell he had just took.

Heiji stepped forward, attempting to steady the man too as he backed away from her. "And you say I turned down your help?"

He scoffs, turning to walk away for what seemed to be the fifth time in the conversation. "Have a nice night, Heiji."

"Your jealousy isn't cute," she spits. "Your jealousy over nothing."

"I have every right," he weakly points a finger at the woman. "You're my wife, and you're hanging around with some guy who needn't I mention - you lost your virginity to."

"Shut the fuck up," she blurts in frustration. "You're taking this somewhere it doesn't have to be. I'm going to sit with more than twenty people, not just him. And if you seriously think I'm sneaking around on you then-"

"Then what?" He challenges, the anger and heat was bouncing off the walls in the room as they stared intensely at each other.

"Without trust, a marriage is nothing," she says sternly, her voice cracking at the end. "And I won't be demonised for trying to live a life outside of this house and outside of you."

Her words stung both her and him, but it was months of frustration building up for the two of them. She didn't mean to come off so harshly, yet she couldn't contain them much longer.

"A life outside with him?" The man scoffs, earning a disgusted look from Heiji.

"Fuck off, Sunwoo. You're ridiculous."

Heiji downed the first drink Yuqi gave her, telling the girl everything as the girl listened intently. "Okay, we are getting drunk tonight."

The two had arrived at the bar shortly afterwards, searching for the group of teachers as they found them in the corner of the bar.

"Hey!" Heiji smiles cheerfully, an attempt to hide her troubled mind.

The two sat between other teachers from their department, beginning to chat about random things which Heiji found herself joining in on.

"I take it we are having some shots?" Yuqi asks her, earning a reaction from around the table. Heiji nodded, giggling at the reactions from the other teachers. Most of them were much older than the two, with the exception of Mr Lee and two other physical education teachers.

"And he arrives," Yuqi whispers to Heiji, nudging her arm as she looks up to see Hyunjae entering the bar.

His eyes catch hers, as Heiji looks away quickly. She didn't want things to be this way, but Sunwoo's words lingered in her mind and she couldn't help but suddenly feel awkward - as though he could see what was going on.

"Shots then?" Heiji smiles at Yuqi after taking a deep breath.

She counts heads at the table, before excusing herself to go to the bar and pay for the round.

"Hey," a voice startles the girl from behind her.

"Hi," Heiji nods, turning to see the unfamiliar man. "Can I help you?"

"I was just wondering if I could buy you a drink," he speaks smugly, earning a roll of the eyes from Heiji.

"No thank you."

"Why not?" The man steps closer behind her, Heiji looking through the people surrounding the bar to find an opening to which she could squeeze in to.

"Do I need to have a reason?" She answers back, earning a chuckle from the man.

"Sorry, I don't handle rejection well," he holds his hands up, Heiji faking a laugh and a smile.

"Well you'll need to handle it, I'm married," she holds up her left hand, showing her ring as the guy only looks at her with a more smug look on his face. "Must you keep bothering me?"

"The thrill of the chase of a married woman," he shakes his head, smirking. "You always play hard to get."

Heiji is about to respond, before she feels a hand wrap around her shoulder, pulling her close to their chest. She looks up to see Hyunjae.

"Have you ever thought that they don't play hard to get, they just are in fact showing you - that you will never get them?" He tilts his head as the man looks at him.

"This is your husband?" He looks between the two.

Heiji gulped, looking up at Hyunjae before wrapping her arm around his waist cautiously. "Yes, it is."

"Attractive man," he nods his head slowly, another smirk coming to his face. "I guess something has to compensate for how shit he is in bed."

Hyunjae doesn't leap forward, however, as the man may have expected he would. Instead, he stood there calm, staring the man down.

He didn't react, because simply - the man only insulted him, not Heiji. If he had insulted Heiji, that would have been the problem.

"Look at the time," Hyunjae dramatically sighs. "Seems like it's ten minutes past your bed time. You best be off then."

"Oh, he's funny too," the man chuckles, looking at the girl, winking. "Well, you know where to find me."

"Yeah, outside on the deck if you don't shut the fuck up," Hyunjae spits before regaining his composure. "Better be on your way now. Your mother will be worried her son is staying out late to sexually harass women at bars."

"Who would have thought?" Heiji joins in, pouting and nodding as Hyunjae laughed down at her. "Bye bye."

Defeated, the man took one last look at the two before walking away as Hyunjae and Heiji retracted their arms from around each other.

"Thanks Hyunjae," she nods, suddenly avoiding eye contact as he looked ahead too. "I could have handled him, you know."

"I don't doubt that, Heiji," he chuckles. "Just being a gentleman."

"I expect nothing less," the woman nods contently, before things suddenly felt more awkward between them.

Heiji felt weird about the whole situation, pretending another man was her husband, especially him. If Sunwoo knew, he wouldn't be happy. And Hyunjae knew that too.

"Heiji?" He says, looking down at the girl as she looked up at him with those beautiful eyes, making the boy blink before turning away.

The man was genuinely scared that the longer he looked at the girl, the more he would fall in love with her. And he couldn't hurt himself anymore than he already had these last few years.

"Yeah?" She quickly turned away from their quick glance, her eyes looking at the bar to see if anyone was ready to serve them.

"It would be best if we didn't talk," he says suddenly, making Heiji's stomach drop. "I'm sorry, I really am."

"May I ask why?" She didn't know why she was enquiring, she should've accepted his answer there and then.

"Your husband is sick," he starts. "And I'm just the guy who is in love with you. Don't you see how wrong it looks if I'm just hanging around?"

Heiji stayed silent, she could see his argument, however, awkwardness at work was not something else she needed right now. She almost overlooked the fact that he admitted he was still in love with her, again.

"I understand," she nods, looking up at him. "I appreciate your consideration, Hyunjae. Seriously."

"I'm glad," he nods, giving the girl a small smile before looking away again. "Here is some money for the drinks. I don't want you paying for it all yourself."

Heiji bows, giving him a quick thank you as he walked away. This would be a long night.

"And you'll text me when you're home?" Heiji drunkenly asks Yuqi as the cab pulled up outside her house.

"Yes, don't you worry," she points her finger lazily, stumbling over her words. "I love you, I'll call you tomorrow."

Yuqi kisses Heiji's cheek as she reaches over to hug her before handing over some money and exiting the cab.

She smiled to herself as she walked up the pathway to her house, her night was good beyond what happened between her and Hyunjae.

She felt a sense of sadness wash over her as she realised what she was coming home to. A house of hostile lovers. She sighed, feeling a certain warmth when she thought about the boy and being able to jump in to bed with him, to hold him and to let him know how much she loved him, and that everything would be okay.

As she looked up, however, her sadness only turned to distraught.

His car was missing. There was a note on the door.
