5. All of the Lights
"I don't know Allison," I say into the phone, closing down the bookstore for the night," it's just, she's the same Lydia but she's not."
Surprising right, I still have a job I know. I've barely been working here lately and I'm pretty much thinking about quitting since this is the first time I've worked in 2 weeks. Technically I can work here wherever I want since Joe and I made this deal but I should really let the job go.
"I know what you mean. Do you think the bite is affecting her?"
"I feel like in a sense it is," I answer, saying goodbye to my boss.
Joe nods, the door closing behind me as he is too invested in the magazine he reads to notice me.
"Yeah I do to, I just hope it's not too bad, so how did seeing Derek go."
I groan, wishing she hadn't asked," I kind of... sort of kissed him."
"You don't kind of, sort of do anything Imelda. Why did you kiss him?"
I sigh," it was too help him, he just looked all sad and shit. No one was going to believe him if he walked in looking like that so I kissed him."
"Well how did it feel?"
"Like I had fallen into my own personal piece of heaven," I mumble, quickly walking through the darkened parking lot. Damn Charlie for having to use my car, last time I walked anywhere I got turned into the Dea. I guess now there's not much to worry about seeing as how I am pretty strong.
"Wow, Imelda. Do you think you guys will get back together?"
"We were never together in the first place,"I correct her," listen we will talk more at school. I need to get home."
"Okay. See you tomorrow. I need to stop and get gas anyway!"
"Bye Allison!"
Holy crap, is this town always so deserted? Like honestly, maybe it isn't in my best interest to be walking around alone.
Oh well, I'm a Dea; kicking someone's human ass shouldn't be that hard and if they are supernatural well then just come bring more fun.
Some guy walked past me, he smiled friendly enough at me so I gave him a smile right back.
"Have a good night," he murmurs.
I nod," you too."
I pick up my pace, realizing that if I don't make it home soon then Charlie will be throwing a giant bitch fit.
Sighing I hear the guy from before stop.
"Hey wait!" He asks.
I sigh, turning around quickly," yeah?"
"Sorry." he mumbles.
"Sorry?" I question but that's as far as I get because soon enough a black bag is placed over my eyes and I'm thrown straight onto the ground. My head slams against the cement, I groan out and try to wiggle away but the persons got a tight grip on me. They handcuff me and I hear a car pull, I'm assuming I'm thrown into the back of it since the next thing I feel is a soft seat.
I stay calm, doing my best not to panic and focus my surroundings. Once a long time ago my father put Charlie, Dom, and I through a hostage situation course. Nothing big, just the basics but it was enough to know panicking was definitely not good. Besides, I could break out of these cuffs quickly.
I took a deep breath and almost yelled out when I recognized the scent.
It was the Argents.
Big fucking surprise, I guess Allison wasn't joking when she said her family was extreme. No sense in trying to get out of this, besides if I broke these cuffs they would definitely know it was me.
So I stayed silent, listening into their heartbeats and determine who I believe to be Chris driving.
Soon enough we stopped, all doors opening and I being instantly taken out of the car. This person who I don't recognize slams me against the cars side, uncuffing me. His fingers dig deeply into the soft skin of my wrists, and then taking me off the car.
"Move," his rough voice orders and pushes me to walk on the hard surface.
I have no clue where we are, none except that we are definitely in a parking lot.
He forcibly sets me down into a chair and then quickly ties both my arms and legs.
I restrain from growling out a snarky comment, instead wait as he finishes.
Once he's done, the black hood is yanked off my bed.
Two black cars are parked behind Chris Argent, his arms crossed in front of him and an attentive look permanently etched on his face. I see that we are in the parking lot of the school, the bus parking lot where I first became associated with their group.
A part of me says to act fake surprised and then angry but I'm Imelda... there's always sarcasm.
"Chris Argent," I say, laughter breaking through," well I guess if I was to be taken hostage by someone it's better this way since you know... there's not gonna be a manhunt for me anything."
A short pause follows, he ignores my words and then begin walking around," do you know what happens to a hunter who is bitten? Do you know what would happen if you were bitten?"
I resist the urge to snort and roll my eyes.
Too fucking late for that one buddy...
"Do you know what we would have to do? What Allison would have to do?" He questions me, stepping closer with a long sword in his hands.
I purse my lips, moving my wrists around and answering," let me guess, your buddy there would split me in half? Ending what you hunters call Lycanthropy."
"What we call Lycanthropy," he corrects mel, insinuating that I was now part of them. He hands the sword over to the same guy from earlier that bid me a good night.
I cock an eyebrow," really? Cause I'm the only one tied down. Don't really think that's a we situation."
Once again I'm ignored as he begins pacing around," you know, I had a guy at the police station the other day. Had him go do something for us and he says he was stopped by a girl. Not just any girl though... he said this one could fight and she had a sharp tongue. Kicked his ass, the one thing that struck me about this girl was that he said she was short... she was short and had a sharp tongue. Know anything about that."
I don't deny it, don't even waver. I just let a bright, proud smile come onto my lips," okay so I kicked his ass... but he was going to kill Isaac."
"That's right!" He says, " he was going to kill Isaac and if we find him on another full moon we will kill Isaac."
"And who's smart ass idea was that?" I question," let me guess, you?"
He stays silent, a definitive wrong answer.
I sigh," I'm thinking old, bald, and should really be in a retirement home? Gerard."
Chris jaw tenses, signaling that I'm pushing some buttons but in all honestly I could give a shit.
"Wrong," he says, coming close to me and then crouching down right in front so we are at eye level," the argents have a surprisingly progressive tradition, that now involves you, knowing wars and violence are typically started by men; we place the final decisions, the hard ones on the women. Are sons are trained to be soldiers, are women leaders."
I smirk, commenting," now that's one tradition I could get behind. Hell, make it a fucking Holiday while you're at it."
"Do you know why we brought you to this spot?" He questions me.
I look around," probably because this is where I was recruited?"
He shakes his head and stands," no, this is where your fears showed their true colors. The alphas attack and you almost losing your best friend brought out the greatest fears inside you; like Allison, who is currently at the Hale House trying to escape, these spots were chosen especially for you. This is your training Imelda. It starts now. Get out of that chair."
"Wait! I yell out, teetering with the chair," how am I suppose to get out?"
"Allison has her arrows, you have your fists and combat moves. Put them to use," he give me the tip.
A guy comes out from behind, showing me an iPhone with a timer. He hits start and the time begins to fly as he too joins Chris in walking towards the cars.
I'll be damned if I'm left here alone so I think quickly. I need to smash this chair and since its wooden it'll be easier, I turn my head painfully so I can see the back wall and notice that it's cement bricks.
That'll work perfectly.
Quickly I lift my tied feet together and using a little bit of Dea strength smash it to the flop, the legs crumbling and my feet escaping the tied mess they were in. Now for my hands.
I take a deep breath and run back, the back of the chair abruptly smashing right into the cement wall and a searing pain going up my back.
I grit my teeth and forget the pain, at least the chair broke fully and now my hands are loose. My wrists are burning but they will heal quickly.
I stand and begin walking towards Chris and the rest of his crew who look at me slightly surprised.
Walking up to Chris I roll my wrist around and murmur," I'm a billionaire heiress... I took hostage classes when I was 12 and learned that move from Charlie's Angels. Thanks by the way, I always wanted to try that out. Now take me home."
I walk right past him and into one of the black Tahoe's.
If that's what training is like then it'll be a piece of cake.
--
"Rock climbing is one of the only things I care never to do ever again," I murmur to Lydia and Allison.
Scott and Stiles stand next to me as well, both boys breaking out into a small smile at my comment as we watch the next couple of kids go up.
"You're just paranoid, because of what happened when you were 8," Lydia comments to me.
"We shall never discuss that ever again," I argue.
"What happened when she was 8 Lydia?" Allison's asks, now curious.
"I would like to know what happened," Scott says quietly.
Lydia smirks deviously before answering," when Imelda was 8 her parents took her, Dom, and Charlie cliff diving somewhere around Reno. She was so excited to climb the rocks she didn't even wait for anyone's instructions, what she didn't know was that sometimes snakes were hiding around there. So knowing Imelda she of course climbed and..."
"Got bit by a snake?" Allison says finishing.
Lydia nods," that's not even the worst part, so she gets bit by the snake and falls straight into the lake. Causes this big scene where she's air lifted out of there and to the nearest hospital, cries so hard she pees her pants, and when they speaks to a doctor it turns out the snake wasn't even venomous."
For a brief pause all 4 set of eyes are looking at me in disbelief while I narrow my eyes at the strawberry blonde next to me, and then they are all laughing so hard the rest of the class looks over.
"You peed your pants?" Stiles says through laughs.
"Fuck you guys! I swear that damn snake was venomous! And the bastard bit me on my wrist okay! I was not going to become some type of vampire snake! I've seen dusk till dawn!" I try to defend myself to no avail.
Instead I have all 4 of my friends hunched over, clutching their stomachs with tears in their eyes.
"Drake! Do you think you could maybe leave your stand up routine and come get a grade? You and Jackson are up next," Coach yells out to me.
I sigh in relief, before kicking at Scott's leg and letting him fall over, taking Stiles with him.
"It would be my pleasure," I mumble to coach who laughs at my childish antics.
"Don't think about it," Jackson mumbles over to me, staring at me while I could drop my gaze from the grey wall.
"Kind of hard to do," I mumble, a forced smile on my lips when I think about the wall.
In reality I was absolutely terrified of climbing it, that damn snake had scared the shit out of me enough to stop me from ever climbing anything again.
"You're a Dea now," he says, securing his straps while I did my own," nothing can hurt you."
"Doesn't mean I'm not afraid of it," I answer back.
"This situation is nothing like Reno," he says, "if you fall at least you won't die."
I shrug my shoulders," true."
"Just remember, keep climbing and don't look down," he says to me.
I nod," okay, keep climbing, don't look down."
"You ready?" He says, placing one foot on the thing.
"Not really this shit is giving me a major wedgie," I comment, copying his moves.
"At least your butt looks good," he says looking back at it.
"My ass always looks good," I mumble," race you to the top."
"Don't do that Imelda, I'll win like last year," he says cockily.
"You said it yourself Jackie, I'm a Dea now," I mumble," I'm invincible."
And I'm off, concentrating on winning instead of falling like last time. Before long I'm ringing the bell while Jackson is only halfway down. I laugh and smile in triumph.
Going down fast I stop at him and say," see Jack-Jack, I would win."
He looks at me amused, while I climb back down and I strap myself.
He comes down shortly and coach calls out Stiles and Erica Reyes names next.
Stiles high fives me as I walk past him, while Erica looks sort of scared. I don't even understand why Coach is making her do it, she's epileptic.
I take my spot back next to Lydia, Scott, and Allison.
"No falling and peeing yourself?" Scott asks me.
I narrow my eyes," not like you did."
We watch as both of them begin to climb, Stiles long limbs coming in handy as he's up the wall in no time. Erica however is stuck, right in the middle and I can hear her crying.
We walk over, I standing next to Stiles who looks at me and then right back up at Erica.
"Erica are you dizzy?" Coach asks," is it vertigo?"
"Vertigo is a dysfunction of the distributor function of inner ear," Lydia says in her smart voice before commenting," she's just freaking out."
"No she's not freaking out," I say," she's epileptic. It wasn't a good idea to put her up their in the first place."
"Why does nobody tell me this stuff!" Coach complains," Erica you're fine, just kick off from the wall there's a mat to catch you."
She whimpers a little longer before finally finding the courage to let go.
Quickly unstrapping herself, she looks around as students begin to laugh at her. I narrow my eyes as she runs off, probably into the nearest bathroom.
"Aye!" I yell out," clearly some of you didn't get enough oxygen to the brain as a child since you think it's okay to laugh at others illnesses!"
They all shut up after that, my friends looking displeased with their actions.
"One of us should go check on her," Allison mumbles as Coach goes on and calls another pair of students.
"I'll go," I murmur.
Quickly I walk off, coach not noticing my sudden absence. I follow her scent which is filled with medicine and drugs, a scent not at all appealing. I hear her whimpers coming from the bathroom and when I push the door open I find her in the corner of the bathroom, using the grey sweater she wears to wipe away the tears.
"Erica," I murmur, my heart sinking by looking at her. Quickly I grab brown paper towels from the dispenser and walk over to her.
I hand them over to her quietly, letting her grab them and begin dabbing away at her face.
"You shouldn't have come," she says through silent sobs.
My heart reaches out to the poor girl as I watch her struggle to keep calm. I place a hand on her shoulder," I know you must want your privacy right now but you should know that those kids are asshole. No one should laugh at you, you can't help what's happened to you."
"It's easy for you to say," she mumbles," you changed so fast. You went from being the outcast to best friends with Lydia Martin, You have so many boys drooling over you, all the freshmen can't stop looking at you. You changed completely, how did you do that?"
I sigh, looking away and instead pushing some of my hair back," you wouldn't want to become like me."
"Yes, yes I would," she says, almost bitter" you don't know how much easier you have it."
I shake my head," my life is not what it looks like. There's good but then there's also bad and trust me Erica when I say the bad always outweighs the good in my life."
"You're just saying that to make me feel better," she mumbles, walking to the sink and splashing some water on her face.
I shake my head," I wish I was... but in reality I would give anything to be the social outcast again cause trust me once you've changed there's always a price to pay."
I walk out of the bathroom then, leaving her to think about my words. She seemed okay, stable enough to be alone. I walked with the rest of the class towards the locker rooms, following behind Allison who smiled as we reached our lockers.
She pulled her shirt over her head, asking innocently," how did it go?
I shrug my shoulders, opening my locker in the same moment," weird. I went in too console her and she kind of started giving me attitude about how I didn't know what it was like to be her."
Lydia rolls her eyes form beside me," Erica has hated you since you turned."
I freeze on spot, turning towards her when she says the word," turned?"
She looks clueless as she clarifies," yeah? Like how you went form drag to designer!"
"Oh!" I nod, furrowing my brows when I feel weird.
"Imelda your hand is shaking." Allison tells me.
Looking down I realize she's right, my hands are shaking like I'm freezing to death or I'm scared. I get this strange feeling inside me, definitely not like with Lydia since she is fine next to me but different in the sense that I can feel something's wrong. No... that's not right I can feel something is going to go wrong. And it's leading me towards the gym.
"Come on," I mumble, walking back towards the gym as Allison and Lydia both follow me.
"Where are we going?" Lydia questions but I don't answer as I go through the double doors quickly. In the same moment that Stiles and Scott show up.
We run out towards the rock wall where Erica is almost towards the top, and she's shaking far too much to just be scared.
Scott and I both dash over, she lets go then and both of us reach out our arms to catch her fall. Erica lands in Scott's arms.
"Put her on the ground," I yell at him, he does so.
"What's happening!" He yells out frantically as more students show up.
"Put her on her side!" Allison drops to the ground next to us as we comply.
"How did you guys know?" She asks us.
Erica grabs onto my hand in her haste, locking it in a death grip as both Scott and I answer," I just felt it."
---
School is so boring, honestly why couldn't we live in that Phil of the Future episode where everything you need to know is just programmed into your brain by that headset thing?
Life would have been so much easier, no more having to walk through pointless hallways with dumbass people staring at you as you walked by.
You know what I would most certainly not miss, Math class. It sucked ass, this class was usually my zoning out class.
Math class was one of those where I thought about places I wanted to be instead of here while Stiles spent the class time playing with my hair or murmuring about how tiny my hand were compared to his palm.
You know where I would like to be? Hawaii! With all those hot surfer dudes and tropical fruit... yeah I think I could live off of hot surfers and fruit. Certainly better then what they offer in beacon hill... okay maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. But if Derek and met I in Hawaii as he walked by shirtless and all wet from just surfing a big wave I think instead of being in the predicament we are in instead we would be on the beach; he would be feeding fruit while we watched the sunset and maybe even made out.
Speaking of fruit I want pineapples... but not just pineapples I want a pineapple pizza. Damn does that sound good, wonder if Charlie is up for buying some for me.
He's into that healthy lifestyle shit right now and all he's eating, or should I say drinking are those shakes with protein and shit. He tried to get me into it the other day but I spit it directly down the sink the moment it touched my lips should have known it was going to be nasty since it smelled like a dead raccoon.
Anyways back to my pizza situation...
"Ms. Drake!" Our teacher Mr. Ham caught my attention," would you know what y=mx+b means?"
"Uhh," I begin saying, racking my brain for any material but the mention of ham got my stomach growling. I looked behind him, at the board to see if anything would help me but there was nothing there.
"Do you know the answer?" He questions me, I'm assuming he was also preparing for a lecture.
My, most likely, smart ass response is stopped when a black trench coat walks right past the open door of the class.
Hold the fuck up...
"Ms. Drake, we are all waiting for that answer," Mr. Ham continues to pester me.
"Imelda it's..." Stiles tries hinting.
However I shoot up the moment I see a certain Strawberry blonde walk by our classroom in a daze.
"Bathroom!" I blurt out," I have to go to the bathroom."
"And you will the moment you answer-" the teacher says annoyed.
I cut him off, already gathering my things," you don't understand since you're a man. I as a girl have to immediately use the restroom and if I don't get to go right now because of some stupid problem then I will sit here and explain to you exactly why I need to go."
He sighs, giving up," alright. Take the pass."
"Not necessary," I say, pointing towards the clock above us," class ends in 2 minutes."
With that I causally walk out of the room and once I'm out of vision run down the hall, searching for Lydia.
That man trench coat, I would know it anywhere. That shits been haunting my dream since the formal. And what's worse is he's got my best friend after him.
I reach the small stairs that lead straight towards the first level and outside, but Lydia is standing there. She doesn't hear me as I walk up to her.
Her eyes are staring directly at one trophy and when I read it my throat tightens in fear.
Peter Hale - Captain
"You saw him too," she asks me.
I nod," yeah, I did."
---
The bell rings shortly after I answer her and she murmurs something about going off to retrieve her bag so I let her. Peters scent is nowhere near and besides he's dead, at least he should be.
I follow the lunch crowd into the cafeteria, heading over towards where Stiles is talking with Vernon Boyd.
That's odd...
"I said fifty, with the 'fuh' sound. Hear the difference? If you can't I can demonstrate another word with the 'fuh' sound," Boyd says to Stiles, a very serious look on his face.
"You mean like fuck you?" I question, sitting ontop of the table towards them," that doesn't work on my Stiles here. You know what does work, threatening."
He smiles at me, a small one that I've only seen a handful of times whenever he would come into the library and eat there.
"Stiles," I said, looking at him directly," give the boy his money. Driving the jeep is not as bad as riding the bus. Now either give him the money or I will assist Boyd in shoving his foot up your ass."
He looks at me slightly betrayed but finally sets the rest of the money on the trouble, Boyd once again cracking a small smile my way. Stiles gets up, grabbing the keys in his hands while I wave goodbye to Boyd.
"Thanks for nothing," Stiles says to me.
I shrug my shoulders," I root for the underdog."
"Im like the underdog of underdogs and you didn't help me at all," he says.
"I'm helping you with Lydia okay!" I defend, sighing," besides what do you need those keys for."
"We are going ice skating," he says, sitting in front of Scott at our usual table.
I look confused," and we as in?"
"You, Scott, Allison, Lydia, and I," he says, Scott nodding along.
"Oh no!" I deny, grabbing for the juicy red apple on Scotts tray while once again sitting atop the end of the table.
"What why?" Scott asks.
"I refuse to be the fifth wheel! You'll be with Allison and Stiles will try to be with Lydia which more then likely won't happen if I'm there okay!" I say.
"Come on! What else are you gonna do tonight!" Stiles asks me.
I think about it, having no logical answer besides watching tv and eating my weight in food. I could try to talk to Charlie but we all know that won't end well at all.
However, instead of Scott and Stiles looking at me ready to answer they are all, yes that includes the entire cafeteria, staring at something behind me. A pair of heels click my way and when I turn around the red apple is snatched out of my hands.
I narrow my eyes when I see Erica, only it isn't the same Erica that made me want to hug her and keep all the assholes away from her. No, this Erica that stood before me, looking like she had just walked off a Harley Davidson photo shoot made me want to punch her straight in the face.
And all because she smelled exactly like Derek, even had the matching jacket.
She twisted the apple in her hand, biting directly into it and smiling. She slams in behind me, the fruits hard knock the only sound inside the cafeteria. Erica swallows the rest of the fruit and smirks at me. Her face a mere inches from my own.
"Life has changed for the better," she says sinisterly.
"Give it a minute," I growl out, my fists already bunching up," realties hand is gonna come to smack you in the face soon enough."
"That's not what Derek promised sweetheart," she says with a smile on her face.
She walks off then, going right back outside, everyone watching.
Lydia walks up next to me then, slamming her hands onto the table," what the holy hell is that."
"It's Erica," Scott manages to murmur.
"No," I growl, for once my eyes shifting without my consent," it's my new target practice."
I stomp off then, following her. Scott and Stiles are quick to get up and follow me, one of them taking my forearm into their palm. I'm assuming to keep me from dragging her up and down the hallways. Doesn't matter, right now I feel like every an army can't take me down.
I practically rip the double doors out of my way, watching on as Erica smirks once directly at me and gets into the black Camaro.
I should have ripped that thing apart when I had the fucking chance.
Derek is in the drivers seat, grinning madly at me.
"I'll rip her Barbie head off," I spit under my breath.
His smile just widens as he drives off. I know exactly what game he is playing.
"Imelda-" Scott tries to calm.
I cut him off," don't even try to clam me down. Just promise me that the next time we see that car the both of you are helping me tear it apart."
Stiles steps in front of me, suddenly enveloping me into his arms and squeezing the life out of me. Part of knows he trying to console me.
"I've got the bat and your crowbar," he murmurs. A small smile fights its way to my face.
"My mom might have some lighter fluid in the house," Scott adds on, rubbing my back.
My fists unclench slowly, I take a deep breath and pull away from Stiles embrace," good. Now all we will need is a video camera and Derek's address so I can send it to him."
