~Chapter Twenty One~
I take a deep breath, and walk through the door, sighing as the delicious smells of doughnuts, bagels, and coffee waft into my nose. I glance anxiously around, a small smile forming on my lips as I spot Louisa, sitting in a corner, nearly hidden from sight. She gives me a little wave, and a thumbs up.
A delicious smell lazily circulates the room, and I once again sigh in delight. I'm so glad I found Waffy's; it's such a cozy little place, with delicious scents and (presumably) finger licking food. What else could I ask for?
The tinkle of the bell as someone opens the door shakes me out of my trance, and I turn around just in time to see Atticus enter the room. I greet him with a smile, and it's worth it when he returns it with one of his own. He gestures towards an empty table, and I slide into it, choosing the chair facing the counter with all the delightful goodies on it (totally not intentional).
"What would you like to have, madam?" Atticus asks me, impersonating a waiter. I laugh slightly, and am just about to speak, when Atticus says, "Doughnuts and hot chocolate?" I stare at him in astonishment, became that is exactly what I was going to say, and he sheepishly grins. "That's what you always ordered, before...you know..."
I nod my head, feigning nonchalance, but a warm ball of happiness curls up in my stomach. Atticus still remembers what I used to order, three years later? He turns around around, headed towards the counter, and I sneak a glance at Louisa. She's sipping at a drink, and she smiles widely at me. I relax a little; there's no need to be on edge.
Atticus comes back with the trays balanced on his arms, the tip of his tongue protruding in utter concentration. Like a gentleman, he places my order in front of me, before taking a seat opposite mine. For a few minutes, we sit in friendly silence; but soon that silence gets awkward. I glance around the room, desperately scavenging for a topic point, until I feel my mouth blurting out the words, "Did you know that the centre of a doughnut is completely fat free?"
OH MY GODS, BIANCA. OH MY GODS. My brain screamed at me, and I visibly widened my eyes. BAD JOKE. ABORT MISSION, REPEAT, ABORT MISSION!
Atticus, however, had a glint of amusement in his eyes. "Really?" He jokingly asked. "I never knew! By the way, did you know that there is no angry way to say bubbles?" That was kind of random of him, but the joke would probably have shaken his brain.
I furrowed my eyebrows, like challenge accepted. We spent a bit of time attempting to say bubbles in an angry manner, but it always ended with me collapsing into fits of giggles. We received a few glances from our fellow customers, but I really couldn't care less. Once, I nearly fell out of my chair when Atticus did a particularly funny impression of a berserker waving his hands wildly, and saying bubbles. An old lady beside us looked as if she would have a heart attack at our outrageous behaviour, so I desperately tried to stop the giggles.
A light tinkle echoed through the room, and I turned around, just to see who the new visitor was. The smile melted off my face like butter.
Brittany stalked into the room, talking on her phone, exaggerating her movements. As soon as she saw Atticus and me, she slung her phone into a handbag at her side.
"Hi Atty!" She exclaimed, and I gagged. Atty?
"Oh. Bianca." She greeted me coldly, eyeing my outfit contemptuously. I didn't wither under her glance; Louisa and me had spent hours scouring my cupboard for the perfect outfit. I was dressed in a floral tank top, black shorts, and Converses. I had borrowed a pair of cute strawberry earrings from Louisa, and I absolutely adored them.
Brittany, on the other hand, was dressed in a dark blue striped skirt and white crop top. A glittery handbag hung at her side. She slid in beside Atticus (I hate un-invited guests), and snarled at me. I think it was supposed to be a smile?
My hands clenched under the table, and I stood up. "See you later, Atty." I said to Atticus, venom in my voice. I know I shouldn't be angry at him, but right now I didn't care.
I glanced at Louisa, nodding in the direction of the door, before walking out. I could hear Atticus behind me, telling me to wait, but I didn't stop to chat.
