I have been staying with Sarah and Luke for a few days now I have been helping them with any alien issues that arrived on Earth. On this day Sarah had heard of a school that was getting unusually high grades after some weird sightings had happened only a few nights ago. Luke decided to stay at home with Mr Smith to try and research some more things. Myself and Sarah got into her car and drove to the school where we were met by the headmaster, Mr Finch, who was just really creepy. He shows us around the school thinking that Sarah was a reporter for a newspaper doing an article about him and I was an apprentice working for Sarah. We walked down a staircase as he continued talking.

"Our work here. My improvements aren't confined to the classroom. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. We've introduced a new policy. School dinners are absolutely free, but compulsory. Do try the chips." Despite being creeped out by the guy I wouldn't mind some chips right now.

"Oh, I'd love to. Thank you. And it's got to be said, the transformation you've brought about is amazing. I mean, maybe you're working the children a little bit too hard now and then, but I think good results, they're more important than anything." I nodded my head remembering my school years and shuddering at the memories of the bullies and the horrible teachers.

"Exactly. You're a woman of vision, Miss Smith."

"Oh, I can see everything, Mister Finch. Quite clearly." I smirk at this hoping my eyes didn't turn rainbow. He led us both into another hallway to a door that had a sign on the door reading 'Staff room' he opened the door holding it open for us. As we entered Finch started speaking.

"Excuse me, colleagues. A moment of your time. May I introduce Miss Sarah Jane Smith and Miss Effie Garnet. Miss Smith is a journalist who's writing a profile about me for the Sunday Times and Miss Garnet is her assistant. I thought it might be useful for her to get a view from the trenches, so to speak. Don't spare my blushes." As he was speaking my eyes widened and turned yellow when I saw the Doctor. He seemed just as surprised to see me here but we gave each other a look that said 'act like we don't know each other'. Sarah just so happened to walk straight up to the Doctor and greet him.

"Hello."

"Oh, I should think so." I raised my eyebrow.

"And, you are?" Sarah asked him.

"Hm? Er, Smith. John Smith." I repressed the chuckle that the Doctor notices shooting me a look.

"John Smith. I used to have a friend who sometimes went by that name."

"Well, it's a very common name."

"He was a very uncommon man. Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you. Yes, very nice. More than nice. Brilliant." The Doctor kept up a smile but I saw that Sarah was getting slightly uncomfortable so I broke the silence.

"Er, so, er, have you worked here long?" I asked acting like an apprentice.

"No. Er, it's only my second day." He answered.

"Oh, you're new, then. So, what do you think of the school? I mean, this new curriculum? So many children getting ill. Doesn't that strike you as odd?" Sarah asks.

"You don't sound like someone just doing a profile." He says with a big smile.

"Well, no harm in a little investigation while I'm here." Sarah says smiling before she walks away. "You coming, Effie?"

"Yeah, I'll be right there" After she walks away I turn to the Doctor.

"What are you really doing here? And what happened to your hair?" I rolled my eyes at the last question since I started living with Sarah I met one of Luke's friend Rani who I had become friends with I had told her that I was thinking of dying my hair so she help me put some pink highlights in.

"Well, me and Sarah are doing the same thing. As for my hair I wanted to try something new. Look I've gotta go and catch up with her but if you want I know me and Sarah are doing an investigation tonight so try and come tonight." I hinted before running back to Sarah and talking to her in secret about our investigation tonight.

I stayed at Sarah's house and we planned how we would break into the school until night time descended and we snuck around the side of the building before Sarah picked the window lock and popped open the window before helping me climb in. Once I was in, I helped Sarah climb in and closed the window. We looked around the school for a few minutes when we heard some banging we followed the noise until we opened a door to a storeroom I looked behind us making sure no-one was around but my head snapped back to Sarah when I heard her gasp in shock. In front of us was the TARDIS I jumped slightly when I heard the Doctor behind us.

"Hello, Sarah Jane." We both turned around I looked to Sarah who was just in shock seeing the Doctor.

"It's you. Oh, Doctor Oh, my God, it's you, isn't it. You've regenerated."

"Yeah. Half a dozen times since we last met."

"You look incredible."

"So do you."

"Huh. I got old. What are you doing here?"

"Well, UFO sighting, school gets record results. I couldn't resist. What about you?"

"The same." Sarah took a deep breath that was when I noticed that she had been on the verge of tears when she suddenly began crying. "I thought you'd died. I waited for you and you didn't come back, and I thought you must have died." I placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"I lived. Everyone else died." I shot the Doctor a sympathetic look my eyes turning blue.

"What do you mean?"

"Everyone died, Sarah."

"I can't believe it's you." Sarah said smiling until there was a very high pitched scream making my eyes go orange and yellow. "Okay, now I can!" This made me laugh as we ran through the corridors Sarah looked to me. "Wait, how come your not surprised to see the Doctor?" I smiled sheepishly at her.

"Kinda, because I travel with him. You met me when I was on a 'Vacation' of sorts" Sarah seemed shocked at this but dropped it as we suddenly ran into Rose making me smile, Rose noticed me and smiled.

"Did you hear that? Who's she?" Rose asks staring at Sarah.

"Rose, Sarah Jane. Sarah Jane, Rose." The Doctor says introducing them to each other. Sarah smiles and extends her hand to shake Rose's. Rose shakes Sarah's hand but continues to stare at Sarah in shock.

"Hi. Nice to meet you. You can tell you're getting older. Your assistants are getting younger." My eyes widen at this slightly going yellow.

"I'm not his assistant." Rose snaps glaring slightly.

"No? Get you, tiger." As she walks off my eyes go a dark yellow hearing this from Sarah. We followed after her when we ran into Mickey.

"Sorry! Sorry, it was only me. You told me to investigate, so I started looking through some of these cupboards and all of these fell on me." Scattered all over the floor were plastic bags I grabbed one and looked at the contents. My eyes turned green at realising inside were rats making me drop it back on the floor.

"Oh, my God, they're rats. Dozens of rats. Vacuum packed rats." I heard Rose say behind me.

"Okay, great another thing I'll see in my nightmares" I said under my breath but I think I saw the Doctor look towards me slightly.

"And you decided to scream." The Doctor said to Mickey.

"It took me by surprise!" Mickey argues.

"Like a little girl?"

"It was dark! I was covered in rats!"

"Nine, maybe ten years old. I'm seeing pigtails, frilly skirt." I snorted at this covering my mouth when both Rose and Sarah shot me a look.

"Hello, can we focus? Does anyone notice anything strange about this? Rats in school?"

"Well, obviously they use them in Biology lessons. They dissect them. Or maybe you haven't reached that bit yet. How old are you?" My eyes widened in shock stepping back slightly as I could sense a cat fight starting.

"Excuse me, no one dissects rats in school anymore. They haven't done that for years. Where are you from, the dark ages?"

"Anyway, moving on. Everything started when Mister Finch arrived. We should go and check his office." I quickly followed the Doctor to not get in between the two women.

"I don't mean to be rude or anything, but who exactly are you?" Rose asked.

"Sarah Jane Smith. I used to travel with the Doctor."

"Oh. Well, he's never mentioned you." Rose said kinda smug making me flinch looking towards the Doctor as he rubbed his earlobe clearly uncomfortable.

"Oh, I must've done. Sarah Jane. Mention her all the time."

"Hold on." Rose pretends to think. "Sorry. Never. "

"What, not even once? He didn't mention me even once?" Sarah then turned to me. "Effie, you've travelled with him. Has he mentioned me?" I looked between Doctor and Sarah before my eyes changed colours randomly not knowing what to do until I pretended to hear something.

"Oh, sorry can you guys hear that? I'll just go and check it out" I then quickly ran off ahead to get away from the uncomfortable scene. I waited by the headmasters office for the others when the Doctor walked up with his sonic screwdriver and used it on the lock.

"Maybe those rats were food." The Doctor suggests.

"Food for what?" Rose asks. As the Doctor opens the door I peak inside with him.

"Rose, you know you used to think all the teachers slept in the school? Well, they do." My eyes widened and turn yellow and orange when I saw giant bats handing upside down from the ceiling.

"No way!" Mickey exclaimed before he ran away. We all followed after him as we ran outside I saw Mickey panting resting his hands on his knees.

"I am not going back in there. No way."

"Those were teachers."

"When Finch arrived, he brought with him seven new teachers, four dinner ladies and a nurse. Thirteen. Thirteen big bat people. Come on."

"Come on? You've got to be kidding!" Mickey asked in surprise.

"I need the TARDIS. I've got to analyse that oil from the kitchen."

"I might be able to help you there. I've got something to show you." Sarah said leading the Doctor over to the car we arrived in and opened the boot. I remembered that Sarah had but a metal dog in the back, called K-9. When the blanket was pulled away Doctor smiled widely.

"K-9! Rose Tyler, Mickey Smith, Effie Garnet, allow me to introduce K-9. well, K-9 Mark Three to be precise."

"Why does he look so disco?" Rose asked.

"Oi!" Both me and the Doctor exclaimed.

"Listen, in the year five thousand, this was cutting edge. What's happened to him?" The Doctor asked Sarah.

"Oh, one day, he just, nothing."

"Well, didn't you try and get him repaired?" He asked making me raise my eyebrow at this.

"In what way could she get him fixed without changing the future?" Sarah nodded agreeing with me.

"Effie's right. It's not like getting parts for a Mini Metro. I couldn't show him to anyone."

"Ooh, what's the nasty lady done to you, eh?" Doctor cooed at the metal dog stroking it's face. myself and Sarah joining in.

"Look, no offence, but could you three just stop petting for a minute? Never mind the tin dog. We're busy." I hear Rose say from behind us I roll my eyes smirking before covering K-9 back up and go to hop into the car. But before I could get in out of the corner of my eye I saw a giant shadow fly over us making me snap my head in that direction only to see nothing. We soon stop at a small Coffee shop for the Doctor to fix K-9 when we got there Rose went to buy some food I followed her and bought a soft drink. After paying I twisted the lid off and started drinking as Rose ordered a portion of chips.

"You see, what's impressive is that it's been nearly an hour since we met her and I still haven't said I told you so." Mickey says smirking.

"I'm not listening to this." Rose mutters rolling her eyes.

"Although, I have prepared a little I was right dance that I can show you later." Even I rolled my eyes at this. Rose paid for her chips and I followed them to their table, but didn't sit down. "All this time you've been giving it, he's different, when the truth is, he's just like any other bloke."

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Maybe not. But if I were you I'd go easy on the chips." I glared at him intently my eyes going red.

"And if I were you, I'd go easy on what I say to Rose" That made him look down sheepishly before I let out a breath. "I'm gonna get some fresh air" Rose caught my hand before I left.

"You okay?"

"Yeh, I'll be fine" I walked outside and leaned against the building feeling the cold air hitting my skin. I couldn't help wonder how many people had travelled with the Doctor but my thoughts kept getting cut off as I kept feeling eyes watching me making me very agitated. Soon, the Doctor got K-9 working and Sarah and Mickey were putting him back into the car I stood a bit away from them but the Doctor and Rose talking caught my attention.

"How many of us have there been travelling with you?" Rose asked.

"Does it matter?" The Doctor shrugged off.

"Yeah, it does, if me and Effie are just the latest in a long line." She said scowling making me smile slightly knowing she wasn't just thinking of herself.

"As opposed to what?" He snapped.

"I thought us three were.... I obviously got it wrong. I've been to the year five billion, right, but this? Now this is really seeing the future. You just leave us behind. Is that what you're going to do to me? To Effie?" My heart slightly stopped waiting for the answer.

"No. Not to you. Or Effie"

"But Sarah Jane? You were that close to her once, and now you never even mention her. Why not?"

"I don't age. I regenerate. But humans decay. You wither and you die. Imagine watching that happen to someone who you-" He cut himself off making my eyes widen.

"What, Doctor?"

"You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That's the curse of the Time Lords." He sighed taking a deep breath "I don't even know if being half Arnensian will affect Effie's ageing she could slow down or age like a human" I suddenly heard something hiss and by the time I looked up I saw a large bat creature swooping down with it's large claws aimed at me. As it went to grab my Sarah grabbed my arm and pulled me into her and out of the way. I felt my breathing hitch as I tried to calm my heart down.

"Was that a Krillitane?" Sarah asked from her position of hugging me protectively.

"But it didn't even touch her. It just flew off. What did it do that for?" I heard Rose ask before we all got back into the car and went back to Sarah's house to make a plan for the next day. The next morning I was walking along with the others as the children were entering the school.

"Rose and Sarah, you go to the Maths room. Crack open those computers, I need to see the hardware inside. Here, you might need this." I see Rose hold her hand out to get the screwdriver from the Doctor but instead he gives it to Sarah.

"Mickey, surveillance. I want you outside."

"Just stand outside?" He asks in shock.

"Here, take these you can keep K-9 company." Sarah says whilst throwing him her car keys.

"Don't forget to leave the window open a crack." The Doctor says with a smirk.

"But he's metal!" I smirk at him before yelling back to him.

"He didn't mean for him." I see the Doctor smirk at me.

"What're you and Effie going to do?" Rose asks.

"It's time I had a word with Mister Finch."

"And I want to know why one of his bats nearly ripped my head of last night" We entered the school and found Finch waiting for us my eyes turned red as he smirked and walked away. We followed him towards the pool before we entered the Doctor turned to me.

"Maybe you should wait outside" He suggested making me scoff.

"Yeah, not happening" I pushed past him as I saw him roll his eyes after entering my eyes met Finch's who stood on the other side of the pool. The Doctor saw Finch's eyes on me and I felt a protective hand on my shoulder.

"Who are you?" The Doctor asks.

"My name is Brother Lassa. And you two?"

"Effie" I answered bluntly, feeling like he already knew who we were.

"The Doctor. Since when did Krillitanes have wings?"

"It's been our form for nearly ten generations now. Our ancestors invaded Bessan. The people there had some rather lovely wings. They made a million widows in one day. Just imagine." My glare increased the red in my eyes darkening.

"I'd rather not thanks" This made Finch smirk towards me.

"And now you're shaped human." The Doctor continued.

"A personal favourite, that's all."

"And the others?"

"My brothers remain bat form. What you see is a simple morphic illusion. Scratch the surface and the true Krillitane lies beneath. And what of the Time Lords? I always thought of you as such a pompous race. Ancient, dusty senators, so frightened of change and chaos. And of course, they're all but extinct. Only you. The last." I saw the saddness in the Doctor's eyes and subtly placed my hand on his giving him a bit of happiness trying to make him feel a bit better. But Finch must of seen me as he turned his attention to me. "And of course there is you, Effie." My head shot towards him. "The last trace of the Arnensian race resides in you" My eyes glared at him. "Though I think we both know your more Arnensian then human, don't we" Before he could say any more the Doctor spoke up.

"This plan of yours. What is it?"

"You don't know."

"That's why I'm asking."

"Well, show me how clever you both are. Work it out."

"If I don't like it, then it will stop."

"Fascinating. Your people were peaceful to the point of indolence. You seem to be something new. Would you declare war on us, Doctor?"

"I'm so old now. I used to have so much mercy. You get one warning. That was it."

"But we're not even enemies. Soon you will embrace us. The next time we meet, you will join with me. I promise you." He turned to me. "And even if he doesn't, I know you will Effie. A true Arnensian's would never side with someone who wants war" My stomach begin to tighten from the look he was giving me. I suddenly felt someone pulling my hand I looked up and saw the Doctor giving me a reasuring look. I followed him and asked as we quickly walked.

"Where are we off now?"

"We're going to see if Sarah and Rose have managed to find anything" When we got to the computer room I heard laughter. "How's it going?" The Doctor asks as he enters the room. But Sarah and Rose keep laughing. "What? Listen, I need to find out what's programmed inside these." Sarah and Rose kept laughing nearly falling over their actions making me start to laugh the Doctor not helping with his winy voice. "What? Stop it!" We eventually had managed to calm down and Rose had diverted the kids to another room. Whilst the Doctor was working my eyes snapped to a computer near the front that had turned on by itself. I walked towards it notcing a wired writing flashing across the screen. Before I knew what was happening I felt my hands begin to type on the keyboard and my mind went blank.

3rd pov

The gang hadn't noticed Effie's absence as they were working on the computers on the back until the other computers and the main projector at the front came to life showing the program.

"The Skasis Paradigm. They're trying to crack the Skasis Paradigm." The Doctor said in shock.

"The Skasis what?" Sarah asked.

"The God maker. The universal theory. Crack that equation and you've got control of the building blocks of the universe. Time and space and matter, yours to control."

"What, and the kids are like a giant computer?" Rose asked confused.

"Yes. And their learning power is being accelerated by the oil. That oil from the kitchens, it works as a, as a conducting agent. Makes the kids cleverer."

"But that oil's on the chips. I've been eating them."

"What's fifty nine times thirty five?"

"Two thousand and sixty five." Rose answered instantly. "Oh, my God." She the gasped at the realisation.

"But why use children? Can't they use adults?" Sarah asked.

"No, it's got to be children. The God maker needs imagination to crack it. They're not just using the children's brains to break the code, they're using their souls." The Doctor finished leaning on one of the chairs.

"Let the lesson begin." Finch's voice made the trio turn towards him. Finch had already seen Effie working on the Skasis Paradigm making him smile internally. "Think of it, Doctor. With the Paradigm solved, reality becomes clay in our hands. We can shape the universe and improve it."

"Oh yeah? The whole of creation with the face of Mister Finch? Call me old fashioned, but I like things as they are."

"You act like such a radical, and yet all you want to do is preserve the old order? Think of the changes that could be made if this power was used for good." Finch said trying to persuade him.

"What, by someone like you?"

"No, someone like you." This made the Doctor stop in shock by the answer. "The Paradigm gives us power, but you could give us wisdom. Become a God at my side. Imagine what you could do. Think of the civilisations you could save. Perganon, Assinta. Your own people, Doctor, standing tall. The Time Lords reborn." Sarah saw a look in the Doctor's eyes and spoke up.

"Doctor, don't listen to him."

"And you could be with him throughout eternity." Finch said moving towards Sarah and Rose unbeknown to the group also closer to Effie. "Young, fresh, never wither, never age, never die. Their lives are so fleeting. So many goodbyes. How lonely you must be, Doctor. Join us."

"I could save everyone." The Doctor muttered.

"Yes."

"I could stop the war."

"No." Finch rolled his eyes at Sarah's outburst. "The universe has to move forward. Pain and loss, they define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it's a world, or a relationship, everything has its time. And everything ends." Finch saw the Doctor was going with Sarah so he walked past the group to Effie making everyone's eyes widen in shock and fear to see Effie typing inhumanly fast on the computer.

"Well, maybe you should consider miss Effie in this. Poor child, never even got to meet her mother then her father was not in her life for so long. The Skasis Paradigm could be her only way of meeting her mother, of being a true family" He placed his hand on her shoulder making Rose point to him threatingly.

"You best take your hand off her right now, or else" He knew it was getting a rise out of the human so he kept his hand on Effie's shoulder. The other's might not of seen it but the Doctor noticed tears falling down Effie's cheek after Finch had mentioned her mother. This made the Doctor yell and grab the nearest chair throwing it over Finch's head smashing the large screen. As this happened Finch let go of Effie and Effie's screen had turned off making her slump forward blinking quickly and looking around confused.

"What happened?" Sarah quickly grabbed her hand dragging her behind them.

"I'll tell you later" As they all ran Effie had recovered as was able to keep up with the group when they found Mickey and a student running down the hallways.

"What is going on?" Mickey asks but the Krillitanes screeching makes them all run into the canteen as they all enter Finch and the Krillitanes burst in making Effie place a protective arm in front of the student.

"Are they my teachers?" The student asks in shock.

"Yeah. Sorry."

"We need the Doctor and Effie alive. As for the others? You can feast." Effie glares as the Krillitanes start swooping at them as one goes for the student behind her she puts her hand up to protect him feeling a sharp pain she yells in pain and falls backwards. Looking at her arm she sees three deep claw marks bleeding on her arm. As the bat like alien goes to strike again a laser beam hits it away from her making Finch scream in anger. Effie smiles seeing K9 protecting them.

"Suggest you engage running mode, mistress." K9 suggests. They all get up and begin to run again. They manage to lock themselves in a classroom the cut on Effie's arm had begun to really hurt hiding it from her friends so they wouldn't worry.

"It's the oil. Krillitane life forms can't handle the oil. That's it! They've changed their physiology so often, even their own oil is toxic to them. How much was there in the kitchens?" The Doctor asks Rose.

"Barrels of it." At that point the Krillitanes started breaking down the door.

"Okay, we need to get to the kitchens. Mickey." He says turning to Mickey.

"What now, hold the coats?" Despite the pain Effie chuckles at Mickey.

"Get all the children unplugged and out of the school. Now then, bats, bats, bats. How do we fight bats?" The student goes to the fire alarm and smashes it making the Krillitane fall down in pain. The gang run past the aliens making it to the kitchen the Doctor locks the door behind them. He tries his sonic screwdriver on a barrel of the oil.

"They've been deadlock sealed. Finch must've done that. I can't open them."

"The vats would not withstand a direct hit from my laser, but my batteries are failing." K9 spoke up.

"Right. Everyone out the back door. K9, stay with me." Effie would of argued but at this point she was starting to feel woozy from the cut so she followed Rose outside. When they were a safe distance they noticed the school suddenly explode Rose turned to Effie seeing her look very pale she then noticed the blood soaking her long-sleves.

"Doctor! Effie's hurt!" Rose yelled holding Effie comfortingly. The Doctor runs up to her and pulls her sleave up.

"Effie, why didn't you say anything?" She looked down.

"We needed to focus so all the kids could be safe" The Doctor sighed and invited Sarah to come with them to the TARDIS.

A few hours later Effie, sat in the console room a bandage wrapped around her arm they now had stitches from the scratch. Sarah walked into the room smiling towards Effie.

"You've redecorated."

"Do you like it?" The Doctor asks.

"Oh, I, I do. Yeah. I preferred it as it was, but er, yeah. It'll do."

"I love it." Rose jumps in smiling to Sarah.

"Hey, you what's forty seven times three hundred and sixty nine?"

"No idea. It's gone now. The oil's faded."

"Seventeen thousand three hundred and forty three" Effie said from her seat making the Doctor raise an eyebrow at her, impressed by the quick mental maths.

"But you're still clever. More than a match for him." Sarah encouraged Rose.

"You and me both. Doctor?"

"Er, we're about to head off, but you could come with us."

"No. I can't do this anymore. Besides, I've got a much bigger adventure ahead. Time I stopped waiting for you and found a life of my own." Effie smiled knowing she was on about Luke and the others.

"Can I come?" Mickey spoke up confusing everyone. "No, not with you, I mean with you." He directed to the Doctor. "Because I'm not the tin dog, and I want to see what's out there."

"Oh, go on, Doctor. Sarah Jane Smith, a Mickey Smith. You need a Smith on board." Effie then spoke up.

"Please, Doctor I think we should let him it wouldn't be fair to just abandon him here"

"Okay then, I could do with a laugh." The Doctor decided making Mickey smile but he then turned to Rose who seemed to be not okay with this.

"Rose, is that okay?" He asks.

"No, great. Why not?" She says.

"Well, I'd better go." She goes up to Effie. "Remember whenever your on Earth, your always welcome to visit. You've always got a family here as well" This made Effie smile and gave Sarah a big hug minding her injured arm. Before Sarah left Rose walked up to her.

"What do I do? Do I stay with him? Should Effie stay with him?" Rose asked concerned for her honorary little sister.

"Yes. Some things are worth getting your heart broken for. Find me, if you both need to, one day. Find me."
