Chapter Nine

NOW

Sonny

"Here."

I hand Kelly Martins a biology book with book marks in it.

"You are ten minutes late we could have used that time. We have to cover properties of compounds."

She takes the book with her 'I rather be somewhere else' attitude and starts perusing through it before removing a number of markers signaling she already knows some of the marked topics.

A minute into our session things couldn't be more awkward. The quietness, the back and forth glances at the same time avoiding eye contact, the questions and odd replies.

"Look I'm sorry about the other day and your eye. If there is anything I can do to compensate for what happened. I got..."

She puts some money on the table from her pocket and starts organizing some coins. "Are you giving me money?" I am shocked she even spoke to me in the first place. It's rare. Now she is offering me money?

"I only got 7 bucks." She confirms sincerely.

"If it's any consolation the guy had supper with me last night so yeah so much for wanting to one up on him."

"You stay with the guy?"

"Not for long." She speaks defensively, "I'm going to make sure he moves out."

"Yeah?"

I put my pen aside for a moment. "Kelly who is this guy and the kid in question?"

She starts removing the money from the table. Of course I had forgotten that I should mind my own business. Well I thought I take my chances since she was in a talking mood... thought she would open up but I guess not. "What were you expecting? That I would take 7 bucks and forget everything?"

"Anyone ever told you that you got a mouth on you?"

We go back to the session.

"You're one to talk -" not for long, clearly. "The boy who just walked his way into this school with limited editions and a range; no one knows where you come from well except your cousin over there." She points at Robert.

Great, Robert is here.

"You know ever since these tutoring sessions you have been this entitled, mean, egotistical prick with contagious mood swings. I think I'm finished here."

"Hey." Robert chimes in with a summery disposition; Kelly ignores him and walks past him. His stare extends from her to me.

"You two love birds had a fight?"

"F-u Robert. What do you want?"

"You promised."

I sigh. "So did you. You said only one game."

"No I said until Tucker, who busted his knee during last week's game, gets better... Everybody wins remember . How your dad doesn't have to worry Tsk tsk tsk tsk??? So... What was the fight about?"

"Back off!"

Kelly

X hands me the money in an envelope without looking at me. It is my cut from Sheryl's party, a party I did not go to. I do not want to take it but I have to. Kadja just started working at Percy's and lord knows the last thing I need is Craig footing the bill. He has already put enough fingers in my business. This is my last cut then I am out. I have to focus on something like college. I can hear laughter like I am on comedy central- but yes that is what I want. Back to what I do not want X making me feel like shit for not holding my part of the fort, I know he knows I did not sell anything. Word gets around.

Ryan - Mr Kian's younger brother passes a bag of peanuts to me and I pass it to X. Today we are four man short . I am not even listening in to the conversation happening around me because my mind is up in arms wondering about my crew and wondering what X thinks of me, that I am a taker, that I do not want to work for what I have even if it is dirty work.

"I want to be on the lookout this week."

He scoffs. "No."

Ok I am officially a liability, extra baggage, officially the 'girl' in the group. Ryan hands me another bag -now that my mind is on something else the bags are suddenly coming in fast from the back of the truck.

"I need to make up for the past weeks. I can't sit on my laurels besides no ones here to do it. It's just me."

"I need you at school Kels. I need you there pulling up good grades. It's not just for you but for everyone. We need the cover. At Deja's show, the shot out with the Pilgrims, you saved Murphy's a**. It could have been anyone and you saved us all and it has always been that way."

I pass him the bags thoughtfully. "Is it enough?"

"I will let you know when it's not."

"Have you heard from them?"

"No.," He replies without looking at me.

X was dubbed 'Dad' by the crew. He goes from making the 'safest' deals to advising Murphy and the lads about girls and other bad decisions. He is the one that shows up when you need to be bailed out of trouble. He has a way of making you feel good about yourself even when you are sh*tting as f**k.

The gang happened to him after his brother got shot at. Out of the blue he had an entire family to take care of and bills to pay. Somewhere along the line he met Murphy and I as the kids who delivered 'orders'. He took us in showed us the ropes to a not so glamorous life.

I stop at the local store to pick up some basics. This is the part that makes me happy- grocery means one less thing to think about for some time. I can hear Kadja's sigh of relief. One can never underestimate the value of knowing what you are going to eat for the night or the next day.

"Hi Kelly."

I need to leave this town.

"Hi." I respond super exhausted.

Mr. Patel hands me some change with his tale tell eyes.

His insurance money must have come through. He had us fake rob his store, a few weeks ago. He said he needed the money to pay for his wife's medical bills, whatever she was suffering from, I was not listening all I could think of was how twisted it was going to be scaring people like that with real riffles. Bun called it easy money. I was hoping we get out alive. How I survive these things- I do not know.

"No-no-no-no-no-no - Noh!!"

Someone's just demolished my f*cking bike, my only source of transport. It was left slammed on the parking lot like someone ran over it with a car a million times. The thing looks redundant. I cannot believe this.

"F**k it! D*mn it!" problem is it could be the Chiccoz but then again I can think of a million people who would do this to me or Murphy or the whole gang. Talk about a low blow. I look around for a clue.

The Coverton flats are too far to walk. I do the only thing I can do, balancing two grocery bags in one arm. I call X.
