Know Your Enemy
Sang stops short of the back door when she hears a muffled voice from outside.
"Hey mom," A slightly nasally female voice says, "I just wanted to know if I should bring anything with me when I come home next month.....Oh, Vegas?.....No, yea I get it. It's fine, Me and Jay will find something to do. We're still on for Christmas though right?.....New York?....Yea, I guess. Gotta keep him happy.....Yea, I'm sure. I'll stay with some friends....Yea, ok...bye." The girl hangs up the phone with a sigh, unbeknownst to her that her conversation was not as private as she thought.
"Ugh! Just great," She sighs in annoyance, "mom gets a new boyfriend and I get kicked to the curb. Again! Fine, whatever, no big deal. I'll call Jay, not like he'll have anything to do."
She lifts up her phone to dial her brothers number, after it rings a few times he picks up.
"Yea?"
"Hey, mom's bailing on Thanksgiving and Christmas so what do you wanna do?"
"Actually I already have plans."
"What!? You've gotta be fucking kidding me! First her, now you?"
"Jade it's not like that."
"Oh yea? Then tell me dear brother, what the fuck is it like? 'Cause from where I'm standing it looks pretty fucked up!"
"Don't be such a bitch. Tasha's family invited me to spend the holidays with them. And since when do you even want to go home and see mom? I thought you'd be too busy banging Rocky to care about seeing us."
"Yea, well he's got his nose in the air for some new bitch. Not really sure what the hell anyone sees in her anyway, she's not even pretty."
"Gee I don't know Jade, maybe she hasn't fucked her way through the football, basketball and baseball team."
"Fuck you! And neither have I, two of those Academy guys won't give it up."
"Not like that's stopped you before."
"Just what the fuck are you trying to say Jay?"
"I'm saying maybe if you stop being such a slut you could get a guy to take you home, and not just to his bed. God Jade have some respect for yourself! I'm done looking after you!"
"Fuck you Jay! I don't need you! I don't need anyone!"
"Keep telling yourself that sis." *click*
Jade stares down at the phone in her hand in disbelief, how could her own brother think that about her. He's lived the same life she has and yet he has the nerve to turn up his nose at her. Jay's always been there for her. When they were 6 and their dad got locked up for possession with intent to distribute. Through all their mom's less than perfect boyfriends who tried to put their hands on her. He was always there after those few who slipped through the cracks succeeded. Jade can still feel their hands on her, touching her most sacred and innocent parts. Knowing her mom knew and did nothing to stop them. Now Jade knows why her mother never stopped them, she's not so innocent anymore. Hasn't been for a long time. Now she willingly does all the things her mother practically forced her to all those years ago, only now she does them on her own terms. She'd do anything to feel something, anything, instead of the numbness seated deep within her soul.
Jade puts her phone away and dries the traitorous tears falling down her face.
"I don't need him, I don't need anybody." She mumbles to herself.
After she composes herself, a creak in the door makes her turn around. She watches as Sang walks outside and moves over to the side of the back porch, leaning over the railing with her hands clasped in front of her.
"Well if it isn't the new little slut." Jade sneers at Sang. "Got tired of being on your knees already?" This is Jade's defense mechanism, has been since she was a child. Her thoughts on the matter is that no one can hurt you if you hurt them first.
Sang ignores Jade and continues to look out at the reflection of the moonlight on the pool.
"You better stay away from North." Jade continues, "He's mine! He doesn't need some little wannabe slutbag hanging all over him so back off! He hates that you follow him around you know. He's says it's pathetic, how little your self respect is. Personally I couldn't agree more, so just stay away!" Jade crosses her arms and glares at Sang.
Sang finally looks away from the water and turns towards Jade, standing up to her full height, not that it's much. Jade flinches slightly from the look in Sang's eyes. It's not hurt or anger like she thought she'd see in the small girl. Instead it's pity, for her. Jade doesn't need or want anyone's pity, it just fuels her rage.
"You think you're better than me? You're nothing! No one will ever love a little whore like you!"
Sang flinches slightly at the reminder of her mother's last words to her. Seeing the reaction, Jade thinks it's because of her and continues. She hurls insults at Sang while stalking closer to her until she's right in her face. The whole time Sang just stands there, her hands at her side, doing nothing.
"You'll never be good enough for him, just give it up already." Jade says, ending her rant.
Sang looks Jade right in the eye and tilts her head to the side, examining her.
"Glad you got that off your chest? Do us both a favor and next time, use a mirror."
And with those parting words Sang walks back into the house, leaving a dumbfounded Jade in her wake.
