Chapter 4

Meanwhile, Lauren was headed to the front of the school, where Travis was already waiting for her.

"Hey," he said, pushing off the wall, but as he did he tripped and ended up on the ground.

"You okay?" Lauren asked stifling a laugh.

"Do you happen to have a band-aid?" he asked, ignoring her question. "Because I think I just scraped my knee falling for you."

"Umm- Uh. What-? Wait." she stuttered, unsure of how to respond, but Travis just smirked and began heading down to the lake, throwing a "You coming?" over his shoulder. Lauren followed, still quite embarrassed.

At the lake, a canoe was already at the shore, ready to go, and Lauren climbed in without hesitation. She and her dad had gone canoeing before and it was great, a lot of fun and adrenaline if you went fast enough. Travis however, was a little more hesitant.

"Come on," Lauren said, recovered from her bout of embarrassment and stretching out her hand to help Travis into the craft.

"I can do it myself." Travis pushed her hand away and jumped into the canoe, rocking it like crazy and splashing both of them with water.

"Travis!" Lauren complained.

"What?" Travis asked defensively. "I got in, didn't I? Now we need to catch a duck."

"Can we catch two?" Lauren asked enthusiastically. "I want to make one into a poultry pie."

"Okay, I guess so." Travis shrugged. "Just how are we going to catch them?"

"I researched this," Lauren said proudly. "Sneaking up on them while they are eating and catching them by the neck is the best way."

"So are we going to lay out bait and then wait?" Travis quizzed.

"I guess so." Lauren unknowingly echoed Travis's words. "How's the middle of the lake?"

"Suits me just fine," he said, not really caring.

Then the two of them got out paddles and slowly began to get to the middle of the lake.

"On my count," Lauren said confidently. "Three, two, one, row!"

When she said row what was supposed to happen in theory was they would row in sync with each other and propel the canoe forward, but what actually happened was a little different. Somehow Travis ended up rowing the opposite way so all they did was spin around in a circle.

"Wait, we're supposed to go the other way?" he asked, smiling innocently. It was very obvious he did it on purpose, so Lauren decided to retaliate.

"Hey!" Travis shouted out, wiping the water from his eyes.

"Problem?" Lauren asked, mocking his previous innocent smile, but her eyes said, Try me.

For the next half hour both forgot about the project as they splashed each other with water, and only when a flock of ducks landed in the middle did they snap out of their childish behavior.

"Well, that was fun," Lauren said, wringing out her black shirt like a sponge. "And obviously I won."

"In your wildest dreams," Travis snorted, flicking a few drops of water on Lauren as she rolled her eyes.

"You're not starting this again, are you?" She asked, getting into an exaggerated cautious fighting position.

"I might be," He smirked, flicking some more water on her.

Lauren wiped her eyes, partially to get the water out, and partially to hide the evil smile, which she soon replaced with a sweet one. "Travis, who is better at canoeing?" She asked.

"Me, obviously!" Travis stated, sure of himself. That is until, out of nowhere, Lauren jumped up and landed with all her weight, rocking the boat. Travis tried to steady himself, but it was useless and he ended up falling: right onto Lauren, toppling over her.

"Umm, this is awkward," Lauren said, after an uncomfortable moment of being completely paralyzed.

"I'll second that." Travis agreed, slowly rising.

"Uh, don't we have to catch a duck now?" She said, just to break the awkward silence that settled afterward.

"Umm, I guess," He answered, picking up his paddle began to row, and Lauren silently joined him as they slowly moved towards the middle of the lake.
