Chapter 1: Hot and Cold

A seventeen year old boy walked through the street at night, the hood of his hoodie covering his face from anyone's sight. The street lamps were cold to the touch since it was fall, almost winter. However, the boy was hot, almost sweating under his hoodie. His mother had made him wear two shirts under it, as well as gloves, which closed off the sleeves.

The boy looked around and sighed, his breath showing up in the air. He then pulled out his phone and put in his earbuds before turning on music. Normally he would sing along, however the music be listened was just the piano, nothing else.

He then looked around and breathed from his mouth once again, his breath visible in the cold air. He then stopped walking, coming upon an intersection. The sign for walking was red, so he decided to wait, even though there were no cars at all. He then pressed the button to request to walk. After a moment, the sign turned to a white silhouette of a person speak to life on the sign.

The boy then began to walk across the street, the street lamp behind him flickering it's light since it was going to run out of power. The deep purple night sky was littered with stars, some bigger than others.

As the boy turned into a building he sighed before opening the door. He walked into the lobby of the building and went to the elevator, pressing the button that requested the elevator. The boy then took out his earbuds, turning off the music as well as the elevator doors opened. He stepped in and pressed the number seven on the panel, the doors closing after a moment. He then slowly felt the pressure of going up, chuckling slightly.

"Haven't used one of these in a long time." He said to himself before the doors opened.

He then walked out of the elevator and walked to a room at the end of the hall to the right. He pulled out the room's key from his back pocket and turned it in the lock before turning the doorknob. He was then greeted by a leather couch, wooden coffee table, 35' inch TV, and a kitchen on the left. He looked over to the kitchen, seeing his mother making rice.

His mother looked at him and smiled.

"Well, you're home early." she said.

"Eh, it ended early. Mrs. Grenner couldn't stay for the whole time." the boy said as he walked over to his mother, giving her a hug.

"I just can't believe you're doing that. Working on robots? That's beyond me." she said, giggling a little as she hugged her son back.

"So, we're havin' rice?" the boy asked with a big smile, since it was one of his favorites.

"Yes, we're having rice." his mother said with a smile, smaller than her son's of course.

The boy then took off his hoodie and sighed in relief before setting it on the back of the couch as he walked past it to get the remote for the TV.

"Hey, are you sure you're ready for all of this?" His mother asked.

"What do you mean?" the boy asked back.

"Well, have you studied enough?" His mother asked.

"Yes, mom." the boy said.

"Ok, just wishing for the best. You better do well tomorrow, Carter." His mother said.

The boy then nodded and chuckled, it was kind of amusing.

"Mom, I think passing a test for a school that focuses on not just normal education, but also using abilities to help people will be fine." He said, propping his feet up on the coffee table.
