Sap on Steroids

Colerc glided over the soil and leaves. He wished he could run like a normal person as that would be so much faster but he had no leg bones so it was pointless. He could hear the angry snarls behind him and the sound of claws against the undergrowth. Sap was getting closer. On a normal day that wouldn't be so threatening as usually Sap was a small sugar glider with a superiority complex who couldn't run for very long if he wasn't bothered, which he never was. Today wasn't a normal day. The footsteps got closer as did the crazed growls of the raged beast behind him. That wasn't Sap, not anymore.

Colerc could remember the time before this. It had been so quiet and peaceful. They had been at their makeshift home as they waited for the police to cease their search. Sap had been sleeping and Colerc was reading a book on physics, not that he could understand much but he wanted to make something to help with their situation and it was a good place to start. Colerc was brought back to reality as heard the sound of his bloodthirsty companion overturning trees in his rampage to get to him.

Colerc ran for all he was worth. Like his life depended on it, because it did. Sap was gaining on him and he wouldn't have much longer. Colerc's lunges heaved as he bolted for the nearest shelter but it was well over a mile away and Sap would have caught him well before then. Deep down Colerc knew it was impossible to escape this feral monster but he still had some small hope inside that he would make it.

Sap's footsteps pounded the ground. The rocks beneath its paws turned to rubble . Sticks turned to dust and anything unfortunate to get in its way were dead before they knew it had come. Sap was in a rage of hunger and nothing would stop him from getting what was its to consume. Nothing would stop it and if they tried then they could join the rest left in his wake.

Sap was getting closer and his fidus Achates was getting wearier with every passing stride. Sap knew Colerc wouldn't last much longer. It felt a little sad as it was enjoying this chase but it was outweighed by the euphoria it felt at the thought of its reward for capturing the little bag of bones.

Colerc felt numb as he ran. He could barely think any besides running away. His brain screamed at him 'danger! Run! Run! Quick!' But he had finally realised that there was nowhere he could go to escape. He was just biding his time. He noticed too late the tree root in his path. He plummeted to the ground. He accepted his fate. He turned so his face was to the harbourer of his demise. It only took a moment for him to be caught. Sap, no this couldn't be Sap, the creature seemed to tower over him. Its maw was filled with razor sharp teeth. Its eyes were bloodshot and empty. Drool hung from its jaws showing just how hungry it was.

The creature pinned Colerc to the ground with its claws. Its breath smelt of old honey and rotting mangoes. It's teeth were the size of knives and twice as sharp. Colerc closed his eyes and awaited pain.

The creature shifted so it kept Colerc immobilised under one paw. It lifted its right paw over its head and brought it down on Colerc.

Colerc waited but only felt something shift from his goop and the creature get off. He opened one eye and stole a glance at his doom bringer.

The creature was drinking a bottle of honey. What a sight it was to see this huge creature, that looked as though it was built for killing, drinking honey from a 7cm (5.512 inches) bottle, even with the challenge of its gargantuan teeth, it didn't seem to care about anything besides the honey.

Colerc sat up and collapsed against the tree. He laughed tiredly when the shock wore off and he realised what had just happened.

Sap finished the bottle and started going home. Colerc got up to follow him then decided he would rather not walk the rest of the way.

Sap felt Colerc climb onto him and was about to complain when he noticed that Colerc had fallen asleep. Sap huffed and moved onward on the long journey back home.

(749 words before this not including measurement conversion)

Colerc is running. He hears footsteps behind him. He won't stop. Sap is behind Colerc and is mad about the honey restriction though that is not mentioned beforehand. Sap catches Colerc and takes the honey. Colerc is relieved Sap isn't trying to kill him.

fidus Achates means the following:

Important assistant.

A person outside the personal bonds of family, with whom one shares a mutual affection with.

Faithful friend.

I thought it would be an interesting phrase to put in as people who don't know the meaning could definitely take it the wrong way and it would be misleading.
