Bonding On Birthdays
Note: So, my actual birthday is less than a month away, so happy birthday to me!
One question I have about birthdays...
Why do we give presents to the kids? Why not the adults? They were the ones who created us, went into labor for us, raised us, yet kids get the celebration.
It makes no sense.
Also, this story is in the version where Barry's mom's death was the day before his birthday, and this is after the Runaway Dinosaur, where Barry visits Nora's grave.
There is finally some real hurt!Barry stuff in this chapter!
Anyway, enjoy this chapter!
...
Barry was so happy.
It was his first birthday with Len!
He finally got to celebrate the best day of the year with the best person he knew!
The weird thing was, Len hadn't said anything to Barry about it.
It kinda hurt.
It was his special day.
He didn't want a surprise party, or something else.
He just wanted to spend the day with Len.
...
Barry kept hinting about something, but Len had no idea what it was.
Wait. Why was Barry off today?
Hmm.
He should probably ask.
But he had too much pride.
It was obviously something Barry excepted him to remember.
Was it hot in here?
...
Caitlin and Cisco were setting up STAR Labs for the party.
Knowing Len, he had totally forgotten what today was, and that would break Barry's heart.
So, they decided to make it seem like he hadn't by having a surprise party.
Hopefully Len would go with it.
...
Len had gotten a weird call this morning saying Barry was off, to pick him up, and bring him to STAR Labs.
They didn't say why.
He decided to go with it.
...
When Barry walked in, and was greeted by the customary shout of, "Surprise!", he looked at Len and felt his heart break.
He hated being set up.
He hated surprises.
He hated his birthday.
So, with tears in his eyes, he ran to the one place that he knew he would be left in peace.
...
Cisco, Caitlin, Joe, Iris and Len were confused.
Why was Barry sad?
Then Joe remembered something Barry had said.
"You know, after Zoom and Reverse Flash, I hate surprises. And being set up, especially by loved ones. And, my Mom died the day before my birthday, so I just want to forget. Makes me wish I could get drunk."
Joe gasped.
"We did everything wrong," he breathed.
"What?"
"Barry literally said, 'You know, after Zoom and Reverse Flash, I hate surprises. And being set up, especially by loved ones. And, my Mom died the day before my birthday, so I just want to forget. Makes me wish I could get drunk.'"
"Man, we all screwed up," Len whispered.
He then ran out in hopes of finding his boyfriend.
...
"You know, I love them. I guess I just, I can't do that kind of thing. I've always hated surprises, and I guess I expected them to remember that. Being set up, who likes that? And you'd think they would remember when my mom died."
Barry sat next to his mother's grave, and felt the tears fall.
"Well, I should probably put the mask back on," he muttered and zoomed off.
...
Note: I put that line there because I feel like he always wears a mask. No one, when they have that much tragedy, can be that happy, at least in my opinion.
...
"Barry?"
"Hey," Barry sighed. He was so sick of wearing a mask around his boyfriend, so he let it fall.
"You know, I thought this birthday would be special. Different. But I was wrong. It sucks worse than any other. Because it made me feel like my family doesn't listen. But that's ok. It sucks, but it's not life-threatening or anything."
Len couldn't help it.
He walked forward and hugged Barry.
"I love you, and I'm so sorry."
Barry felt the dam break.
He cried softly into Len's shirt.
"I love you too," he muttered, and hugged Len as tight as he could.
"I forgive you, and I always will."
...
That was tested when Len admitted he'd forgotten Barry's birthday.
...
Note: I hope you enjoyed.
Congrats on hitting 200 reads! I must be a good author.
