BONUS CHAPTER: Yuno's Silence
Yuno POV
I walked with Asta to the gate of the Magic Knights exam and spotted someone that made me halt.
"And did you see Sister Lily when I asked her to marry me-OUCH!" Asta bumped into me. "Yuno?"
I was frozen when I saw a girl with (h/c) hair talking to someone with floppy brown hair.
Who is that?
Time seemed to stop when I saw a black string that connected me to her direction.
A red string of fate means soulmates.
A black string of fate means that they're your soulmate but aren't meant to be with you.
I never understood what I meant.
Time resumed and she walked right past me, looking up at me briefly.
I covered my face and hid a blush.
Beautiful.
"Oi! Yuno, why'd you stop moving?" Asta jumped up and flicked my cheek but I moved back, walking towards the arena with a dazed look on my face. "What's gotten into him?"
I watched her take the exam, easily flying next to me on her broomstick.
But then I noticed time stopped but what startled me was that she stopped time.
I watched her jump up to the balcony to where a guy with the red string of fate that was attached to hers was standing.
Oh. So he's her soulmate while I'm just the indirect direct one.
It was very rare to have a soulmate who wasn't meant to be with you, but it's happened to people before.
Time resumed and I found myself up next for the battle.
When we were called up to be chosen, (y/n) had all the captains raising their hands for her.
I noticed the guy from before leaning forward, interest glimmering in his eyes.
(y/n) chose the Golden Dawn and I chose the same squad, hoping to at least become close with her.
My room was across the courtyard from hers and I could see her and the man who I learned was the Vice Captain of our squad.
So she likes the stars?
The morning after, I sat near her, on the right side of the vice captain who all but glared at her.
After breakfast, I decided to talk to her.
"My name is Yuno," I said as I walked with her around the base.
"I am (y/n)," she said with a saddened smile. "You must be the last."
I gave her a confused stare. "What do you mean by that?"
"You'll understand one day," she said as she placed a hand on my shoulder. "But don't think for a moment that we aren't in the same predicament because in ways, we are."
She removed her hand from my shoulder and walked ahead of me, her aura saddened.
What does she mean by that?
I ended up going to the library to go read.
I had first found some books on the history of the kingdoms surrounding the Clover kingdom since I was bored, not expecting to see a portrait of King Maxillion Korenthan and Queen Consort Anika Korenthan.
I was shocked to find she looked like Queen Anika Korenthan of the Diamond Kingdom.
A couple days later, I heard she and Langris got into an argument.
"I expect you not to ge in my way tomorrow," he was saying to her in an angered tone. "I don't know why Julius wants you to come with me and the other vice captain. You're nothing."
I gripped my wrist, fighting the urge to scratch his eyes out.
He doesn't even know who he's talking to!
How rude.
(y/n) closed her eyes and took deep breaths.
I had noticed the mana was cold as was the air around me.
I was about to step out of my hiding place when she left, not looking back.
But I ended up running into her on the way back to my dorm.
"(y/n)," I nodded to her respectfully. "How are you?"
"I'm fine," she lied.
I rolled my eyes. "You're lying to me."
At her silence, I sighed since I didn't want to make her upset.
I wanted to take her mind off that asshole who was her soulmate.
"Come on, I want to show you something." I looked back and saw her spirits brightened. "Don't take it as me being friendly, I'm just making sure you're on your A-Game."
(y/n) chuckled with amusement and followed me to the garden tower.
"What's this all about?" She asked me.
I opened the greenhouse and pointed to a rose in the shape of a diamond. "You're from the Diamond kingdom, aren't you?"
"No-"
"Don't lie to me," I said. "I know you must be the very last. I found it suspicious when you looked just like the previous queen, but with different eyes." I held up the book about the four kingdoms.
Then a frown made its way onto my face. "But I find it strange that there are no records of the Spade royal family. The pages were torn out."
(y/n) shrugged. "Well, I don't know what to say to that."
I closed the book and gave it to her.. "Something about you seems tragic. You know I am here to talk if you want. You know that?"
(y/n) smiled, feeling better. "Thank you, Yuno." She sat down on a marble chair and started looking at the pages.
I sat down next to her, wanting to sit directly next to her but also not wanting to seem creepy.
It was silent for a bit before I decided to speak again. "Hey, (y/n)?"
"Hm?"
I asked her about her relationship with our vice captain and she informed me it was basically nothing.
So that means I have a chance still.
I invited her to join Klaus, Mimosa, and I on missions and told her not to give her answer right away.
I was about to leave when she stopped me.
"Yuno-"
"I know, I won't speak a workd about what we discussed," I said to her as I bowed slightly. "Your Highness."
I noticed Langris's appearance in the shadows and closed the door, glaring at him.
"Vice captain," I said as I stood up to my full height.
"Rookie." He glared up at me. "What's your buisness with her?"
"Why does it concern you?" I asked.
"I-"
"Exactly, it doesn't." I moved ahead, looking back at him. "It's not over, Vaude. I will be the one to become the vice captain and captain one day. And I will do so with her at my side."
I could tell he was pissed off so I exited the scene quickly before he could attack me.
More months passed and I had to watch (y/n) be reincarnated into an elf.
I was also reincarnated but since my elf counterpart died the day Licht and Tetia got married, I didn't have intentions to kill humans nor destroy everything.
In the shadow palace, I watched (y/n) working alongside her elf counterpart with the real Licht (not Patri impersonating him) and the first wizard king to defeat Zagred.
It was beautiful.
She was beautiful, inside and out.
Time passed quickly and I had the displeasure of overhearing Langris breaking up with her over an account of something stupid.
I watched him leave and I quickly entered (y/n)'s room, comforting her.
It was horrible to see, especially since it was clear (y/n) had eyes for him.
Yet I'm still foolishly hopeful that I have a chance.
I escorted (y/n) to her kingdom where we trained together.
I had found out earlier that I was the long-lost prince of the Spade kingdom, the only surviving heir to House Grinberryall.
I knew I stood more of a chance to be with her since I was apparently of royal blood just as she was, but it was also not good since Langris himself was of nobility.
Still, I stuck beside (y/n).
I eventually came to terms with her lover, him telling me to protect her if anything happened.
I swore to do so, knowing that it must've taken a lot for him to suck up his pride and even talk to me.
However when (y/n) and Langris were about to get married, the Golden Dawn was attacked and (y/n) died in Langris's arms.
I attacked Zenon with full force, but he overpowered us.
However, (y/n) used some sort of magic to come back and she saved us alongside our captain.
Days later, (y/n) was up.
The flowers I had in my hand dropped and I ran over to her, scooping her in my arms despite Langris giving me the meanest look ever.
"I really thought you died!" I was on the verge of crying but knew I couldn't.
"We made an unbreakable vow. To save each other and our future," Langris snapped at me. "And the last thing she needs is your shit. Get lost!'
I let go of (y/n) and stood to my full height. "I'd watch your mouth, Langris. I may have just ound out my true heritage, but it doesn't dismiss the fact that you've always treated me like crap."
(y/n), in other words, told Langris to leave so she and I could speak.
"I'm sorry about him," she sighed.
I sat down on the bed next to her, sighing with loss. "It's fine. I'd act the same way if you were mine."
I wanted her so badly to be mine, but fate had other plans.
Hence the black string.
I stared at her for a bit, pain in my eyes.
We talked for a bit more before I decided to fess up.
I told her the promise I made to her fiance, knowing that she deserved to know.
Conversation eventually turned to me teasing her about her future with the former vice captain and I told her about my childhood with Asta and the other children at Hage.
I allowed her to lean on my shoulder, wrapping an arm around her since it was fine for us.
How I wish you were mine.
Despite better judgement, I kissed her forehead and lips before falling asleep next to her.
Through the war, I found myself side by side with Langris and (y/n) to defeat Zenon since Nozel went to go take care of the dark disciples.
After the war, I felt myself growing distant from her.
I learned I had a sister named Emily who died in childbirth, begging me to take care of her other son Eren.
However she lost the child she was giving birth to, Eren losing not only his mother but his stillborn sister.
The kingdom welcomed Eren as the heir since hewas the son of my older sister and had the blood of House Grinberryall.
But tensions started to rise between the Diamond kingdom and my kingdom.
Especially after she told me to leave her kingdom since she had to remind me that our kingdoms no longer had the same type of alliance as before.
It pained me to walk her down the wedding aisle despite what I told her, but I still did it.
If she's happy, that's all I care about.
I was pleased to hear that she delivered a healthy baby boy and named him Fallon, but I was angry at myself for not telling her the truth of how I felt.
And in that anger, I was hostile to her to the point where she didn't invite Eren and I to the christening of her daughter Princess Yuki Eira Korenthan-Vaude.
We eventually made our friendship again at Asta's ceremony to becoming the Wizard king, both of us missing each other.
But she had already expanded her family and it just pained me even more.
And many years later, I found myself reading a letter from Langris that he clearly wrote in distress that (y/n) had died, saving us from the gate of Hell.
I ran outside and didn't care that people were around, letting out a cry of pain.
I never got to tell her personally how I felt, nor the soulmate string even though she wasn't meant for me.
And now she'll never know in life.
I attended her funeral, calm and collected while I was dying internally.
Her family and I became closer and I pushed aside the old rivalry I had with her husband as I couldn't imagine what he felt since he knew her better than I, even having a family with her.
I was pleased when my adoptive son Eren married Gray Rosen.
And many decades later, I found myself on my deathbed.
I was greeted into Heaven by (y/n) herself.
"Yuno!" She looked just as I remembered.
Young. Beautiful. Powerful.
And that beautiful smile.
"Good grief. You made me wait too long to see you again." She took my hand, a cool breeze making her white dress flow in the wind as she guided me to the hall of immortals that humans called the gate to Heaven.
"(y/n), I've missed you."
She gave me a warm smile. "I missed you too, Yu. Now shut up and let's go. I want to show you everything here."
And we were reunited once again.
