Reader Elf POV (499 years ago)
On my fifteenth birthday, I recieved my grimoire that had wintery magic.
"Wow, that's so cool!" The younger elf children surrounded me outside the grimoire tower, eager to see me use my magic.
"Isn't it weird that Patri has light magic and she has wintery magic?"
Licht shrugged. "Well I suppose her mother had wintery magic, so it's not uncommon."
I gazed at Ratri who looked very proud.
I could see it in his glimmering blue eyes. "Well?" I teased him. "Do you want to make good on that promise you made me last year?"
He scoffed in a teasing manner. "As if I could forget-"
"HEY!" Patri shook his head and stood between us. "You will not be doing anything with my sister! Back off, plebian!"
I cast an annoyed look over to Ratri who shared the same frustration.
He sent me the signal to meet him later after Patri went to bed and I nodded in agreement.
Patri and I invited our close friends to the house to celebrate.
Fana sat extra close to me as did Charla and Reve.
"Patoli," Charla called to my brother. "You'll be arranging a wedding in three years!"
Patri glared at her. "Charla! First, call me Patri. Second, like hell that will happen! I'd rather die then see my baby sister married off to Ratri."
Ratri pretended to clutch his heart. "Ouch."
Rhya let out a lazy yawn. "Don't mind him, Ratri. He's only scared of losing his sister. But they're close to the point where nothing can separate them."
"Be careful," Reve snickered. "I think that Ratri really wants to marry you sooner than later."
I looked down with a blush. "He does? How do you know?"
"How do you not know?! He literally talks about you non-stop and is always happier around you."
Maybe that's true.
And in the spring the following year, I was out with Ratri when we spotted a pair of humans.
"Stay behind me," Ratri warned.
We indeed knew that humans had murdered our kind as they were jealous that we were loved by mana and they weren't loved so much by mana.
But then Licht jumped into action and saved the human girl from the wind storm, capturing her in his hands.
The male with her ran up to Licht, but we were too far away to hear what they were saying.
"Hey, Ratri? Isn't that the prince from the human kingdom?" I whispered, motioning to the prince who had blonde hair.
He nodded and used his magic to bring us back to the village.
But again, Licht met with the human pair.
So we questioned him about it.
Licht explained to us that he had befriended the human siblings.
"I believe we can coexist together," he explained to me. "And I think this can work."
And in my youth, I trusted him.
Ratri didn't like it, but he didn't question his leader.
One day I decided to try out the new spell that appeared in my grimoire that morning after I saved the elven children from the currents.
"Winter Magic: Blizzard."
And in a flash, the entire area was covered in snow and the clouds started to storm, flashing lightning.
"What the hell...?!" Ratri started running towards me, opening portals to get to me safely.
"HELP!" I screamed, unable to control the magic.
And as soon as it came, the storm was over, ended by a blinding flash of golden light that I would never forget.
"Are you alright?"
I opened my eyes and saw the prince holding his hand out to me, worry in his eyes.
I was mesmurized by his stare, feeling a huge rush of calm. "Yes...thank you...?"
"Lemiel Silvamillion Clover," he said as he helped me stand up.
Ratri ran up to us and shoved the prince away, wrapping his arms protectively. "Don't touch her, human!"
I placed my hand on his. "I'm okay, Ratri. Thank you, Prince Lemiel."
He and I held each other's stares for a bit before he looked away with a very faint blush.
"You are welcome...?"
"(y/n)."
"(y/n)..." he repeated my name. "And who is your friend with you?"
I tore my gaze from him and noticed how Ratri was fuming in anger. "He's Ratri."
"Ratri. Ah, I remember Licht and Rhya telling me about you." Lemiel nodded. "Well, I should get back. If you wish," he said to me. "I can help you learn your magic."
"Really?" I tore Ratri off me, not liking how his grip on me was getting tighter. "Ratri, stop hugging me too tightly!"
Ratri's gaze softened and he was about to apologize when Lemiel interrupted him.
"Of course, I would be glad to teach you with the knowledge I have on elemental magic." Lemiel started walking away, casting one final look at us and waving with a smile.
As soon as he was out of sight, I turned back to Ratri who was scoffing.
"What's wrong?"
"Don't get so close to him," Ratri frowned.
"Why not? He's being friendly."
He shook his head and sighed. "You just don't get it, do you? Are you oblivious, (y/n)!?"
I didn't like how his voice was getting more and more angered. "Ratri, what's wrong? Talk to me."
He only left through the portal and I scoffed with annoyance.
"BAKANA!" I used my ice creation magic to look for him, spotting him sitting near the river we used to cross as children on the stones. "Ratri?"
He only ignored me and jumped into the water for a swim, taking off his shirt and leaving it hanging on a tree branch.
I stood on the rocks waiting for him to resurface.
"Ratri!" I called. "Please, can we just talk?"
He swam to the rocks and treaded water, nodding.
"Why were you so rude to Lemiel? He was being friendly!"
He stared at me with determintion in his eyes and a blush on his face. "I like you, damn it!"
My jaw dropped and I looked down. "Really?"
"Of course! Have I ever lied to you?" He waited for me to object, but that never happened. "Exactly. I don't like how he's getting close to you. You're mine, (y/n). We're together. I love you."
I smiled gently in understanding. "Me too. I love you too, Ratri. Now I understand. But Lemiel can never replace you."
He cupped my face gently and stared into my eyes. "Can I kiss you?" He whispered.
I nodded.
It was gentle, contrasting his previous attitude.
I could've sworn I felt his heartbeat, but maybe it was my own that was beating against my chest.
It was sweet and I could taste the cherry pie he ate as a snack, my face entirely red.
He broke the kiss, wrapping his other arm around my waist. "Can I kiss you again?"
"You can kiss me as many times as you want."
He brought us in for another kiss and I gripped his shirt tightly, but I fell into the water.
But did I care?
Absolutely not.
I clung to his body, wrapping my legs around him as he pushed me against the rock, kissing me feverishly.
Things got a bit more heated. He ran hands down my body and slipped his tongue in, feeling every area of my mouth that he was claiming.
I let out a small moan. "Ratri.."
He chuckled. "I know, (y/n). I know."
"No, Ratri!!" I pushed him away from me, him giving me a hurt look. "Baka. I'm all wet!"
He smirked. "Oh?"
I went red. "No! Not like that! My clothes! My clothes!!! The water!"
"Whatever you say, (y/n)~"
"ACK!!" I shook my head. "I don't suppose you don't have any spare clothes?"
"Yeah, you can wear my shirt. But that's gonna cost you." He flicked my chin and purred into my ear.
I tried my hardest not to fall into 'the zone' again. "Baka."
"Oh, fine." He broke apart and went to fetch an oversized shirt using a portal, helping me out of the water. "Wear this." I started to take off my clothes, well aware he was watching.
"Can you turn around?!"
"I'll see you anyway through the water's reflection,"
"Weird, but I don't care!"
He turned around and I quickly changed. "You can turn around now." He did so.
I went red at the thought and sat down, grabbing the blanket and wrapping it around me as soon as he returned with a blanket through the portal.
"Hey, what about me?"
"You said you were fine!" I countered.
He sighed. "Fine, but I guess I'll have to take drastic measures."
I gave him a confused stare. "Say what now?"
Using his magic, he made a portal. I didn't know where he went until I felt two arms snake around me and feather kisses on my neck.
I gulped. I've never seen this side to him. But at the same time, my heart was racing. "N-"
"Wrong." He moved the blanket off me. "Licht says we should clean if we are punished. And look at me. I'm a mess. There are tree twigs stuck in my hair, water everywhere."
"Where are you taking this?"
He smirked. "I want you to clean me."
I then knew for certain that my brain just malfunctioned. "What?!"
"You know, you still owe me that favor that you would do 'anything'."
I had forgotten. "Shit...why couldn't I have just gotten off my ass and make food for myself?"
"I dunno, but that favor is going to work perfectly now~"
"No, Ratri." I said. "Not near the others swimming!"
I motioned to the elf parents with their children a bit away from us, watching us with curiosity.
He chuckled lightly before ripping the blanket off me. "Oh, I don't care~"
In a matter of seconds, he had turned me around, connected our lips, and had me slowly removing his clothes.
"I don't think such actions are appropriate, Ratri."
"I don't give a crap," He said.
I managed to get out of the situation, getting the twigs out of his hair and throwing them to the shore. "Happy?"
He was about to argue when we heard the sound of my brother's angered voice.
"RATRI! YOU GET YOUR ASS-I MEAN BEHIND HERE RIGHT NOW!"
Ratri visibly gulped and I walked away, winking at him while secretly praying for Patri to take mercy on him.
Of course, my older brother didn't.
But that didn't matter.
More months passed that turned to years and Ratri and I only got closer.
Then Licht announced that he would be marrying Tetia, Lemiel's sister.
Ratri and I attended the wedding, already engaged.
"You'll be next," Rhya nudged Ratri who only looked away in embarassment.
I patted Ratri's hand and watched as Tetia and Licht exchanged their vows, wondering where my dear friend Lemiel was.
Everything was fine until the sky turned red.
"What the hell...?" Ratri stood up and tried to use his magic only to find he couldn't.
Moments later, I felt a searing pain in my abdomen and saw a source of light magic swords making my white dress bloodied.
"Ra-tri..." I fell over, just barely being caught by him.
"(Y/N)!" He tried so hard to use his magic and heal me as I did the same, but more arrows came from the sky. "Don't leave me, you hear me?!"
I could only hold him close as he tried to protect me from more arrows.
One by one, all of the elves were killed by the arrows, blood splattering the ground.
I held Ratri close to me. "Promise me something, Ratri!"
"No! Save your strength!"
"Shut up and listen to me! If we meet again in another life, promise me you'll let me become your bride!" I cried.
His eyes were full of fear as he held me tighter. "I promise. But you're not going anywhere, (y/n)!"
I shook my head and cupped his face. "I love you, Ratri."
I didn't hear what he said next, but I saw his mouth moving in a shouting manner and a sword came from the sky, plunging from his head to mine.
And we were dead, our lips locked together in one final kiss.
Reader POV (present day, Grand Mana Zone)
"What the hell..." I woke up with a headache. "Why do I keep seeing these people..."
I looked over to see Langris still sleeping on the makeshift bed next to me, a look of pain on his face.
"You were crying someone's name in your sleep," Kirsch informed me as he came over with a mug of (tea/coffee) for me to drink.
"I was?"
He nodded. "Someone named Ratri. And he-" Kirsch pointed to Langris. "He was calling out your name. Almost as if he were watching you die. You both said something about elves."
I took a sip of the beverage, feeling uneasy. "Oh..."
"Yeah. Well, let's wake him up before Aishubado decides to screech in his ear."
And in half an hour, we were on our way to the village where we enountered Diamond mages kidnapping children.
"The nerve of those idiots..." I growled as the Blade of Icarus appeared in my hand and a crown made of ice made its way onto my head, wings made of ice appearing on my back. "Like hell I'll let that happen."
It all happened in a blur and we were back in the Clover Kingdom once more using Langris' spacial magic.
I wasn't focused on anything, but something about the captain made me uneasy when he asked Langris and I how the mission went.
"It was fine," I said.
"Did something happen?" Vangeance asked me with concern in his voice.
I looked up and saw how Vangeance's normal purple eyes were golden.
Something about them seemed familiar.
"No, nothing abnormal. The children are all safe and the Diamond mages all in questioning."
"Good." He folded his hands on the table. "I would like you two to become a team. You've more than proven yourselves on the mission. And with Kirsch as well."
I noticed how his eyes returned to their normal state and dismissed it as a hallucination as I hadn't been able to sleep properly for a while.
I left his office with Langris following me and I knew Langris wanted to talk to me, but I was too unnerved and feeling sick.
"(y/n)!" He caught me as I started to fall, my vision playing a terrifying game of hide-and-seek.
I could've sworn I saw the face in my dreams when I looked up at him.
"Ratri?"
