[35] The Other Son

Comments highly appreciated!!

Langris POV

I hurried over to House Rosen the following morning to confront the new head, a woman who I had a very small fling with ten years ago.

"Lady Eline," I nodded curtly to her.

She was in a wheelchair, her terminal illness going even worse for her. "Hello, Langris."

"It's Vaude to you," I snapped. "Now. Where is the boy you claim is my son? Or was that another one of your lies?"

Eline Rosen nodded to a maid who came back with a boy following her.

I took one look at him and knew he was 100% my son.

He had my eyes but his mother's white hair.

"What's your name?" I asked him, feeling no hostility towards him for it wasn't his fault he was born an illegitimate child.

"Gray," he said. "My name is Gray."

"Gray," I repeated. "A strange name, but I like it."

I leaned down and he accepted my hand. "You're very lucky, Gray. Your father is a prince, you know."

"I know," he was quiet. "And I also have a brother and sister."

And you're going to have two more siblings.

I nodded. "That's right." I stood up and faced his mother. "Lady Eline, my wife has extended an invitation to speak at the royal palace. I'd suggest you take her up on that invite."

Lady Eline nodded. "Very well. I trust Her Royal Highness will not be foolish as to attack someone ill as myself."

My eyes darkened. "I can assure you: my wife isn't barbaric. It was actually her who gave me the letter-unopened-that contained the truth that you hid from me for ten years."

"Hm." Eline had her son wheel her through the portal I created, already having talked to her maid to not follow.

(y/n) was sitting on her throne, the guards not in the room to give us privacy.

The only other people were Fallon, her mother, and of course Yuki.

"You must be Lady Eline Rosen," (y/n) said formally.

"I am," Eline confirmed, bowing as best as she could as she was in a wheelchair.

"No need to bow," (y/n) smiled warmly. "I-"

"Stop," Eline looked down. "I don't care what you have to say."

Fallon gave her a look of disgust and was about to snap when (y/n) gave him a stern glare to be quiet.

"I'm going to die in less than a month. I want to make sure my Gray will be taken care of. I would've contacted you never, but alas, I have no family left. After they all died in the war seven years ago, it's just been Gray and I."

"You've truly no one left?" I asked her.

"Not a soul."

"Then..." I couldn't just say that I would raise Gray as (y/n) already looked hurt when she found out.

But what my wife said next shocked me.

"Lady Eline, I would be glad to raise Gray as one of my own," she said. "However, he will not be eligable for the crown as he does not have a drop of House Korenthan-my family's-blood."

"I understand." Eline nodded. "Thank you, Your Highness. That's all I ask for."

"Of course. Now, there is an apartment on the eastern wing that is currently unoccupied. Shall you wish to take it? We can offer you the best care and comfort here at Windsor Castle."

"I would like to spend the rest of my days with my son above everything," Eline said. "And that is all I wish."

"Right."

(y/n) stood up and grabbed Fallon's hand. "Fallon, this is your older brother. Gray, this is Fallon."

Fallon looked up at his older half-brother, a disgusted look turning into one of curiosity as he would always follow his mother's example, even when he didn't like someone.

His theory was that if the person was accepted by his mother, then he too should welcome them.

A policy that I supported 100%.

"I'm Prince Fallon Astro Korenthan-Vaude," he said. "The eldest Korenthan-Vaude. But you can call me Fall."

"Fall. I'm Lord Gray Rosen of House Rosen, a noble house in the Clover kingdom."

"He's also your brother," I clarified.

Fallon didn't look too upset as he accepted the fact. "Then why do you have a different Mommy?"

"Because I met his mother first," I explained. "But I love your mother very much. More than anyone," I said to Fallon.

"Right." He looked skeptical but accepted it anyway. "I see. So, Gray, what magic do you have?"

"He's a spacial mage," Eline said. "And he's gotten training from Finral."

"That would explain a lot," (y/n) muttered. "Well, I know two very talented spacial mages, myself included."

Eline glared at my wife. "You may be his wife now, but I will always be the one who claimed his first time."

(y/n) rolled her eyes. "Do you think that's appropiate to say, Lady Eline? I could care less who he's slept with before. As long as it's old news. Why say something like that? It has no relevance."

Eline scoffed. "You think you're so high and mighty because you're a princess. Unlike you, I've had everything taken from me. My family. My power. My friends."

(y/n)'s eyes glittered with sorrow. "That's where you're wrong, Lady Eline. I don't know what you went through, but you shouldn't assume what some did or didn't go through."

"You bitch," she spat. "If it weren't for you, I would probably Lady Eline Vaude."

I glared at her. "That's enough, Lady Eline. You and I didn't work out and to be honest, you're irritating. Using me for your own selfish needs."

"Both of you, stop it," (y/n) said sternly. "I don't care what happened in the past. And as a parent to children, neither should you. What matters now is Gray and his well-being."

"Right." I cast her an apologetic look, but (y/n) ignored me.

"Now, I'm going to take a nap. Langris, I'll leave you with Lady Eline and Gray. Fall, bring your sister back to the nursery."

"Yes, Mother." Fallon gave me a glare and followed her out, Gray giving him a curious look.

"So...what should I call you?" Gray asked me.

"You can call me whatever you're comfortable with,"
I said.

"Okay, Langris."

Eline gave her son a warm smile and allowed a maid to bring her wheelchair to her living quarters.

"So, Gray, what is your magic like?" I asked him.

He shrugged. "It's mostly for deliveries since Mother doesn't want me overexerting my magic since only Finral understands the magic. Not even your parents know about me."

"I see."

I'll have to work out the bits with (y/n) as how we will tell both kingdoms of such a scandal.

But it would've been found out anyway as House Rosen had rose magic and not spacial magic as Gray has.

"My magic isn't very strong," Gray informed me.
"So I doubt I'll be as strong as you or Lord Ledior,
much less the Queen of Diamond."

I chuckled nervously. "Son, I'm afraid my wife is too powerful for her own good. There's been theories that she outtakes even the first wizard king and fifth Diamond monarch."

"Do you mean Queen Augustine The Great?" Gray asked me.

"Yep. I can tell you've been studying. Good for you."

Gray showed me his magic and I noticed right away it was as weak as my brother's when we were younger, if not younger.

"Gray, how many times have you used your magic?" I asked him.

"Maybe three times? I manifested it when I was nine."

"Ah. Forgive me, but when is your birthday?"

Gray looked down at his shoes. "You don't know my birthday?"

"No. Your mother kept your existence hidden for ten years. Had I known I had a son, I would've given you a much better life, that I promise." I kneeled down and held his hands. "And I would've been there."

"I see..." he sighed. "My birthday is July 5th."

"The fifth of July?" I hummed. "So you and Fallon are both my summer babies. And your coming siblings will be born in the fall."

"Huh?"

"My wife is pregnant," I said. "They'll be born in November as it's February 26th.. Your sister Yuki was born on the 14th."

"I see." Gray looked down. "If you're my father, why hasn't my mother ever said anything? Surely she must've known you had the right to know?"

I sighed. "I don't know, Gray. But I do know for a fact that I'm here now and I intend to be there until the day I die."

"Yeah, so you'd better not die soon."

"Yeah, yeah."

A month later, Gray's mother died.

She died in the rose garden and had requested previously to be buried beside her parents.

(y/n) and the rest of the family followed Gray and I to the funeral in the Clover kingdom.

When the people found out I had an illegitimate son, they weren't too happy but accepted Gray as he was born before I met my wife.

Gray was crying quietly as he watched his mother's coffin be buried.

Fallon tried to offer him comfort, but (y/n) held him back, saying Gray needed time to himself.

After the funeral at the afterparty, Gray was a bit happier, but was still quite sad.

(y/n) found me outside drinking my beverage in the cold March wind, just staring out at the Clover capital.

"Are you alright?" She asked me.

"Of course," I said.

"If you need to speak to someone, I'm here for you."

"I know." I allowed her to hug me. "It's bittersweet. Her and I were once good friends and honestly, she wasn't that bad of a person. Just using my money to try and get medicine for her sick parents. If she had told me, I would've helped. Guess it's far too late now."

"Do you still love her?" (y/n)'s voice got quieter.

I turned and looked down at her. "What?! Of course not! (y/n), you damn fool. You know you're the only one for me and I'm only meant for you."

"I know, but-"

"But nothing. I love you and only you. Now, how the hell are you able to accept Gray? If I found out you had an illegitimate child, I'd be angry and might not accept them as a family member nor introduce our kids to them."

"It's just what love does," she said. "And no one is to blame completely. You were just a dumb teenager when you...uh...conceived Gray. Besides, he's a delightful boy."

"I can't disagree. However, his mana is disturbingly low. It's almost as if he's lame with magic..."

"Maybe, but maybe his strengths are not in magic but another thing?" (y/n) looked at the distance. "I have an ancestor who was born with no magic and she ended up being one of the greatest warriors on the battlefield. She was called Princess Jeane."

"Perhaps."

"In this new age of technology, I am sure Gray can find his purpose. Oh, and that reminds me. I've discussed it with parliament and the guardians. We've agreed on giving Gray a noble title in the Diamond kingdom."

"Really?"

"Of course," She smiled. "He deserves it. You should see him with Yuki. You know how Fallon doesn't let anyone near her except me, my mother, and perhaps Winston? Well, Fall really trusts Gray."

"That's wonderful. I was concerned that Fallon would hate Gray since he's from another mother and we both know how much Fallon adores you."

"Yeah, well, whatever. As long as they all get along, that's fine. And he'll be gaining two siblings. Which reminds me!"

"Hm?"

(y/n) patted her stomach. "I'm carrying a girl and boy."

"Oh?" I smiled brightly. "So we'll have two sons and two daughters together. Technically three sons, but Gray isn't biologically yours-"

"Gray may have a different DNA code than I, but you don't have to be blood-kin to be family."

"True."

"Now...Mother says she feels the war is drawing closer to our world. I fear we will have to fight should the gods chose to bring their war to our world. We must be prepared for what's to come."
