[2] Prince of Spade

Double Update!

Langris POV

It was breakfast now. Awakening, I walked to the door that leads to the balcony. I opened it and stepped outside.

The birds were singing. The sky was blue.

Then I noticed (y/n) standing outside.

"(y/n)?"

She turned around, startled. "Oh! Langris!" She offered me a cheeky grin. "Good morning! Did you sleep well?"

"None of your business!" I said. Internally I was screaming at myself.

She was taken aback. "Sorry! I was being polite!" Both of us stared at eachother. Blue eyes met (e/c) eyes.

"Sorry," I grumbled. I turned away from her and stared at the kingdom below us. "It's a nice morning I guess."

"Yes, it is." She allowed me to get close to her.

I held a strand of her (h/c) hair. "Your hair is a mess."

"Gee, thanks for telling me," she said sarcastically. "I was going to brush it out after studying the sky."

"Don't you study the sky at night?" I asked. "Constellations?"

She laughed. "Yes, but I was looking at the cloud formations!"

Oh. "Oh, okay. Whatever. I don't really care." Then I remembered something I read in an astrology book. "Have you ever seen the constellation Marcus?"

She shook her head.

"Well, the constellation is based off the peasant girl named Marcus. She was abandoned as a child and when she grew up, she became a powerful sorceress. She lived during the earliest days of the Clover Kingdom and bore the first child, which became known as the first Wizard King, and a daughter named Tetia. I really didn't come across her much in textbooks, only that she was killed right after getting married to someone from a distant place." I explained.

"Marcus..." she nodded. "Where can I see Marcus?"

I shrugged. "Outside at night. Where did you come from?"

"The mountains."

"Hmm..." I then hardened my voice. I had to remember she was a peasant and I was a noble. Nothing can happen between us. Not that I wanted something to! "I don't care."

"Rude." She then nodded to the small table by her door. "Can you pass me my comb?"

I was beyond disbelief. "Are you serious? Get it yourself."

"Please?" She asked. "I'll do anything! I'm just too lazy to move!"

"Fine!" I picked up the comb and gave it her, but felt a strong urge to brush her hair. Stupid.

As if reading my thoughts, she chuckled. "You know, you can brush it if you want."

I went red at the thought of me doing so. "F-fine! But only because you asked me to!"

She laughed. "No, I never did!" I noticed her laugh was like a beautiful breeze on a summer day. My jaw dropped. Her hair...it was more beautiful than I thought. Standing this close...

I scowled. "Stupid sunlight reflecting off."

It was later in the morning that we discovered.

"Langris! (y/n)!"

Both of us turned around, startled.

"Oh~" Vangeance teased. I dropped the comb and let (y/n)'s hair down. "I didn't know you would be so friendly to that 'peasant', Langris!"

I went red. "Nope! I was just...combing her hair because she had something stuck!"

"Aww! He does have a heart!" Toriko snickered.

"Shut up!" I said. "I was just assisting her! I didn't want my poor eyes to be harassed by a piece of fuzz stuck to her head!"

Vangeance smiled. "Sure, sure. Now, can we all eat breakfast or what? We've been waiting for you two lovebirds for ten minutes now!"

It was now (y/n)'s turn to go red. "We're not lovebirds!"

For once we agreed on something. "Yeah! End of discussion! Now, if you'll excuse me, I must get ready for the day!"

We ended up eating breakfast across from each other.

Some members looked at her disapprovingly (as usual) and some looked at her in awe.

Reader POV

I looked up from my breakfast to see Langris staring at me from across the table. I offered him a small smile and he looked away, scowling and blushing a bit.

"You know, I've never seen grumpy old Langris blush," Rosseau nudged me in a playful manner.

I grinned at the red-haired female. "Oh? Is that so?"

She nodded. "I've known him my whole life! I've never seen him smile like the way he does now!"

"He's not smiling!"

She snickered. "Then take a look at him now!"

Sure enough, Rosseau was right. Langris had an actual smile on his face that made him look...handsome.

I blushed a bit. "So??"

"(y/n) and Langris sitting in a tree!~" She looked at some other members.

"K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" They joined in. Even the captain was amused by this!

Langris and I went scarlet and looked away from everyone.

"How inappropiate," he scowled. "I am the vice captain! Show me respect!"

"Shut up, man! It's okay to have a crush," some random guy said, nudging his side.

"His brother would want to hear about this!" Torris said.

"Who's his brother?"

He gasped. "You don't know? His brother is Finral! The flirt!"

"Finral?!" I frowned. "Does he have brown hair and purple eyes and is from the Black Bulls squad?"

"That's the one,"

I internally screamed. How could they be related?! His brother was a friendy flirt and meant well while Langris was a turtle hiding in his shell!

"Unfortunately, he's my brother," Langris said. "He's a failure and a shame to the House of Vaude."

I gasped. "He's your brother!"

"So?"

"Never mind." I got up. "Thank you for breakfast,"

I closed the door, but not before I heard what Rosseau said.

"Pfft. Young love."

It was nighttime again. I changed into my fresh set of PJs provided. Everyone wore them.

I stepped outside to the balcony. It was a clear night. No moon to be seen.

I looked around. "Where is it..."

A voice disrupted my thoughts. "Marcas isn't in that direction,"

"Langris." I gave him a nod and he returned it. "Where can I find Marcus?"

He came over and moved me so I was looking at the roof. "There." I followed where his finger was pointed. It was a constellation in the shape of a heart.

"Why is it a heart?"

He sighed. "You're really uneducated on constellations, aren't you?"

I nodded. "Yep."

"Legend has it that Marcas had the purest heart out of anyone so that's why when she went to heaven, a new constellation appeared in the shape of a heart."

"That's so cool!" I squealed.

Langris nodded. "Yep."

"Now, why are you out here with me?" I asked. "Do you normally look at stars?"

He shook his head. "Nope. I just thought I should get some fresh air before tomorrow. I have to go into town." He hesitated. "I know this is weird, but will you come with me?"

My jaw dropped. "Huh?"

He turned away and rubbed his head as if he were ashamed. "Please?"

"Fine," I then smiled. "Warming up to me, are you?"

He shook his head and his scornful gaze appeared, but it didn't reach his eyes. "No! I'm just making sure you're not bored or getting ideas about visiting the Black Bulls!"

Laughing, I nudged him playfully. "Whatever you say, Noble."

"Shut up!"

"Also, why would I visit the Black Bulls?" I asked him with curiosity.

He shrugged. "No idea. I'm going to bed, goodnight."

I watched him go, a smile on my face. "Hm...maybe you're not so bad."

I looked back up at Arcturus, the brightest star in the Northern Sky.

Soon.

Soon I'll be able to save them.

____________________

It was the morning when I met the other new member of the Golden Dawn, but I knew who he was immedietly.

"My name is Yuno," he said as he walked with me around the base since almost everyone else except Klaus and Mimosa were out on missions, even Langris.

"I am (y/n)," I said to him. "You must be the last."

I could tell by his confused stare that he didn't know what the hell I was talking about.

"What do you mean by that?"

I said nothing else but put my hand on his shoulder. "You'll understand one day. But don't think for a moment that we aren't in the same predicament because in ways, we are."

I left him standing there, knowing he didn't know about his true heritage as the very last royal of House Grinberryall of the Spade Kingdom.

I passed the gardens and saw something in the sky that caught my attention.

I created wings out of ice and leapt into the air, not liking the disturbing feeling that it made in my stomach.

I cast my senses out to the strong magic region that separated the Spade and other three kingdoms, seeing a band of people working to enter a village near the grand mana zone, killing them.

"Holy shit..." I knew I couldn't leave right now, but this had to be reported.

Luckilly, I was able to request audience with the Wizard King.

Julius Novachrono listened to my worries and stood up. "You're the last Korenthan, aren't you?"

I stepped back, not liking how he knew almost immedietly. "How do you know that?"

He smiled faintly. "Beause you look just like your mother. I was close friends with her when we were younger."

"Oh. But I urge you, Novachrono. We can't let those people suffer!"

"I agree." He closed his eyes. "I wouldn't normally do this, but I saw your magic firsthand. I'll send word to the squads to send their most powerful mages. I would also like two captains to go since this will be dealing with international affairs and they know what to do. Perhaps I should maybe instead send the vice captains since my captains are a bit busy..."

He looked deep in thought. "Alright, I'll send word out later today. Thank you for telling me, Your Highness."

I shook my head. "Lord Julius, I'm no royal. I may have the blood of the Korenthan family, but without my kingdom? Without my people? I'm nothing."

"Wisely said, young one." He patted my head. "I trust you will someday find your rightful place in the world."

"I hope so too."

I left the castle and flew back to the Golden Dawn base, seeing that most people made it back.

Again I found myself staring up at the stars, holding a constellation book that I retrieved from the library.

Kivin and Tashiko both suggested it to me and I found myself liking the book very much.

"You're out here again?"

I glanced back and saw Langris walking towards me with his hands in his pockets and a frown on his face. "Good evening."

"(y/n), you wouldn't know anything about Julius' summons to his meeting room tomorrow, eh? Captain just told me he's sending us."

I shrugged. "I said what I said. But what's it to you?"

"How did you know about that? Like, none of us knew."

"I don't know, something just hurt me and I flew into the air to investiage."

"You get pains when people get hurt?"

"No, I get pains if it's near the winter lands." I shook my head. "I don't understand it."

He tapped his fingers on the marble railing, a frown on his face. "Say...you aren't from a noble house and I've asked peasants in the boonies if they knew who you were. So you're going to tell me where exactly you're from."

Something about his attitude ticked me off.

"Excuse me, vice captain, but I don't have to tell you anything. And you never know, I might not have been from those villages. The village I'm from is concealed by the winter winds."

Not entirely a lie.

He looked as if he wanted to say something more, but decided not to. "Alright then. But I'm watching you, (y/n). Something about you is off and I don't know what it is. But I'm going to damn well find out."
