Frozen
If there ever was a cause to call me cold-hearted, then it would be you, and you only. As I retreated to the very ends of the Earth, I felt the chill I never had before. No longer did I flow swiftly with a current so strong as it had once been. The cold was making me weary. As weary in body as in mind. I braved across, and yet, I knew I would give the fight up for good reason. This, too, would be a stage of my life, and if that is what the creator deemed best, then I would not oppose it.
Soon enough, I changed form. I became white where I had once been colourless. I had lost all movement. Were you happy that I was restrained? It was of my own accord, yet it was your actions that had driven me to do so. Where I had once been limitless, I now stood still, but I was more so a protector than ever before. I was no longer the last defence. No. I was the armour and shield. You call me treacherous. And you would know, wouldn't you? After all, treachery seems to be something you are well familiar with. Isn't that what you have indulged in all these years? Fine, I am treacherous, but only so I can protect far many more lives than yours.
Frozen as I was, the oceans still flowed beneath me. The creatures still thrived. I watched them all, contended and peaceful- the penguins fishing, the polar bear raising its young. I watched as these lives flourished in their hidden world, far from the reach of killers like you. The jellyfish were about in their beautiful shades of pink and purple. The skies were lit by the auroras, the colour bringing life to the empty vastness of the sky, and for a brief while, life was good. But in a world like yours, nothing ever lasts, does it? The very water you called the elixir of life, you polluted without a second thought. The rains that you called a blessing, you wasted away. Now, you refuse to spare even the very air that you breathe. I have seen you sell water like any other commodity. Is that what you will do with the air too? Bottle it up and stick a price-tag? You build your factories indiscriminately- produce chemicals that you find cost-effective -yet you pay a much higher price. Are you truly so selfish that you think not even of the future of your own kind? You would much rather destroy us in your time if it means you won't have to suffer for it.
You burn things so toxic. Use sprays that choke the air around you. You are killing yourself without even knowing it, and even if you do, you'd call it a blatant lie if only because you are loath to let the luxuries go. You are making the world a furnace—a giant one at that. You are sitting within it, adding fuel with every action of yours. And you will burn. That is the price, but can you be any crueler to force the millions of other living beings to burn along with you as atonement for your folly?
You built a greenhouse to help grow your plants, and the world was happy for it, as was I. Now, you don't grow them. You kill them for selfish gain. We are not powerless against you. Our power is boundless, and that is why we hold back. Stray too far, and Mother herself will rise against you, and that day, you won't stand a chance. Each time you burn something, I melt a little more. Another bear loses her home.
I kept melting, running down the many glaciers, and it was a parting worse than any can bear. I was being torn away from the lives I had sworn to protect. Entire species have been wiped off the face of the Earth. You will never see them again, nor will your posterity. I had promised my cloud that I would help the world. But a time has come now when I can't even help myself, much less help you.
It had once been cold here. Now, it gets hotter by the day. Heatwaves caused by your own foolishness claim so many lives, yet it seems not to bother you in the least. The oceans that had once been a hub of life now show more signs of death than anything. The creatures living there are suffocating. It is high time you humans realize that you are going down, and you are dragging the others down along with you. What little trees survive your atrocities are charred to death by the unforgiving fire. Is this what being advanced means? Is this the proof of your wisdom? Is this the way you use the power that you have been gifted? If this is so, then I want nothing of it.
You say we are all inanimate objects. You claim to have the most capacity to think and feel. What happened to your feelings even as you exploited us? Did you feel nothing even as those little seals mewled piteously over their melting homes? Think you that the Earth cannot bleed and cry as you do? Trust me, she does. She sheds her tears, as do we all each day—tears for the doom that awaits you and the destruction that awaits us. You search so hard for extra-terrestrial life, yet you fail to protect the life on your planet. You are draining the colours of our planet, and soon, all that will remain of us will be the white of bones and the black of death...
All this for something as petty as greed.
