Shadows and Ice

I land on a pile of snow and roll onto the ground. The sun is setting, which provides a perfect cover of darkness. I run down the sidewalk, not bothering to look back. I notice a moving truck, and it has some human-sized empty boxes outside to help the people who are moving. I climb into one, and close the top.

"This one is heavy." One of the workers say.

"Yeah, let's just hurry. I heard they're moving into some old house that was owned by a Jade Marshall." The other says, "Her daughter is living with Stark now, and I guess the stress of that was too much. She died earlier from a heart attack, and get this, she was at the hospital too." My heart stops.

They drop the box and go back inside. I climb out, and run. Luna might be my last chance at safety.

"Please Luna, please." I say to myself as I near her apartment.

I knock on the door, and she opens it.

"Hey, Cas. What are you doing here? I thought Stark would be right behind you at all times." She asks.

"I need your help. My mother is dead, and you're the only person I can trust right now." I respond. She nods, and ushers me inside.

I look around her apartment. She has a bunk bed in her bedroom, and her bathroom is full of makeup. Like how I am weakened by heat, her weakness is light, so the apartment had a dim light instead of a normal brighter light.

"So, is Stark trying to fool you with lies?" She asks.

"Yeah. To make things worse, my mom died from a heart attack, so it's not like I have any other family." I reply.

"Cas, I'm so sorry." She says.

"It's fine. I just need your help with something." I respond, "I need you to find where the Avengers keep their contraband."

"On it." She says, turning on her laptop, "I'm looking for what, exactly?" I watch her look through the blueprints, and then she looks at the camera footage.

"A pair of gauntlets. The ones we built this past school year." I explain.

"Oh, they're going to pay if they messed with those. I failed robotics and computer sciences to make those!" She replies, "I found them. Fifth floor, second room to the right."

"Thanks."

"No problem, Cas. We should be able to get them now. The Avengers are on the streets looking for you. I disabled their security systems, so we have a way to get inside." She explains, closing her laptop.

We get up, and run to the tower. We slip inside without detection, and get into the elevator. I press the button to reach the fifth floor, and we start ascending. We soon stop, and the doors open.

"Second room to the right." She reminds me. I nod, and run.

I open the door, and my gauntlets are in an open crate. I pull them over my wrists, and an icy chill courses through my veins.

"Cas! They're back!" Luna yells from the elevator.

I run to the elevator, and climb in right as the doors close. It descends to the ground floor, and the doors open, revealing a team of angry Avengers. I freeze the light switch behind them, and turn to Luna.

"Hold on!" She orders. I grab her arm, and she teleports us to a new spot among the darkness.

We run out of the tower, and I freeze the door closed behind us. We keep running and reach her apartment. We lock the door behind us.

"We won't get far. They know I have the gauntlets, and that means nearly limitless power." I tell her.

"I have my own toys." She assures me. I watch as she opens a closet full of armor, weapons, and other goodies.

"You built all of this?" I ask, astonished.

"Yeah." She answers, pulling out a set of gloves. They are black with gray fingertips.

"What do those do?"

"These? They can create waves of dark energy. They also amplify my range." She responds.

I take my gauntlets off and hide them in my bag. I don't want to declare war on the Avengers. I look up at Luna, who just nods. She knows why I'm doing this.

"Go. I can handle myself." She says as she turns the lights off. She closes the blinds, and I hide under her desk.

The door slams against the wall, and I watch as she stumbles back from the light. I pull my gauntlets out, and pull them over my wrists. I step out into the darkness. Someone turns the lights on, temporarily blinding us.

"Stop them." Someone orders.

My vision returns, and I cover the thermostat with ice before anyone can reach it.

"I can't conjure dark matter if the lights are on." Luna tells me.

I flip the gauntlets over, revealing a tracker. Luna and I are going to need a miracle to escape this. Then, I see what our miracle is. I run to the light switch, and turn the lights off. I cover the panel in an icy glaze.

"Ready, Darkheart?" I ask, repeating her childhood nickname.

"Of course, Frostbite." She responds.

A wave of dark energy knocks our attackers off-balance, and I freeze them in place. Their arms are frozen in place as I flick the tracker off my gauntlets.

"I have a message for your leader. We will not surrender, we will not back down, we will keep fighting. So, get away from us while you still have the chance." I say as I destroy their icy restraints. They get up and run.

"That took guts, didn't it?" Luna asks. I shake my head, and she shrugs.

We lock the apartment door, and cover the windows. I turn the lights on, but I make sure they're dim. Then, we fall asleep. I'm in the bottom bunk, and she's on the top.
