vingt-quatre
The blond at her side was silent and brooding, scowling at her back as though she couldn't feel it. Her eye twitched, irritation beginning to crawl over her skin like a bad itch and she was half tempted to tear his head from his shoulders just so she could end his childish tantrum.
It had been agreed upon that Victoria would stay away, keeping out of the entire scheme to prevent that little psychic from seeing. Erica could not understand how her cousin was certain that her presence was not already known but she did not really care.
Erica wanted them to know that she was involved. She wanted them to see her, to think that they could out think her and plan for whatever they believed her to be capable of.
Most people underestimated her and it amused her greatly to see their terror once they realised that they were royally screwed.
Riley sped up, shooting her a disdainful glare and her hand twitched, fingers flexing in anger and teeth grounding. The insolent brat was going to get it.
She tackled him from behind, fist hitting the back of his head with as much force she could muster without snapping it right off. She yanked on a fistful of hair, ignoring the way his fingers tore at her hand and lowered her head close to his neck, teeth grazing the exposed flesh in warning.
"Do you want to test me Riley?" she hissed, moving so that she could lick to lobe of his ear.
He growled. "You wouldn't."
"I would. I am not my sister, and she will learn to cope with a loss as insignificant as your own." Erica released him, continuing her way knowing that he would follow without choice. He would never do something to upset sweet Victoria.
She did not like Riley. She did not want to put up with him or be forced to see his face. The boy was foolish, believing that a love directed toward him actually exist. She found it embarrassing, to see him so caught up in emotions that he failed to realise that he was in some sort of game.
As a key point in her sister's plan, she pitied how he pent so much time admiring her and at Vicky's side that he failed to see how false their connection was.
Erica believed that it would be merciful to kill him now lest he suffer such a heartbreak but decided that it was much more entertaining for herself to see the complete and utter betrayal in his eyes at the moment of his demise.
She would relish in that moment.
Reaching the border of the town, Erica took a moment to plan out their course of action. It was necessary that most of what Riley did was based on instinct, that she plan out clearly for herself, so the Cullen's did not see him.
She flexed a hand, squeezing her fingers into a tight fist she ordered Riley away, directing him in the general direction of his target. Erica moved forward on her own.
Splitting from him, she made in the direction of the Cullen home- lingering just beyond their range of senses. They would need to rely on Alice to see her, to spy her and come to stop her.
Erica needed to simply do nothing to hide her presence, she wanted them to focus on her, to come to her instead of head for Riley as he slithered around the human girls home looking for items that could be used to track her- a scent for the newborns to follow.
Standing in the middle of the road, the vampire waited for someone to drive by. It was dangerous, that she knew, not being able to plan around an independent variable. Her plan was weak at best, and embarrassing to the way she felt about her ability to calculate a situation.
She could only plan out different escape routes, and that was something that made her feel like a coward – like Victoria. Her dear brother would never let her live this down.
A snort passed her lips as she thought of her situation. No matter how much time passed her, the vampire would not stop trying to please her brother, would never stop trying to picture that slow grin pull at his lips as he portrayed how content he was with her.
Over the years, she could count the times he had conveyed how proud he was with her on one hand and still she could remember the feeling that it inspired in her clearly. She would claw for his approval even now.
A truck engine was easily heard, breaking her from her thoughts. She made her way to it, a blur of movement before she was before she was standing directly in front of the vehicle, red eyes flashing dangerously in the slight sunshine that stuck through the overcast.
He was her age physically, a boy with a mop of dark hair and a dimple in his smile before he spotted her. The panic in his features made her bones sing and her breath quiver with barely contained excitement.
The boy jerked the wheel, the passenger, a pretty blonde with large green eyes, shrieked as the vehicle swerved around her dangerously.
Erica didn't let them go; moving to their side with unnatural speed, she stuck her foot beneath a tire and lifted as it went past.
The truck flipped, rolling faster than a normal accident with her enhanced strength. She listened, head tilted as their screams stopped and one crunch was heard followed by a hard smack.
The scent of blood in the air was teasing, mocking as she could not touch it. She itched to inch forward but the inevitable arrival of the Cullen's stopped her as they had surely heard the crash.
Delight filled her once the vampire took notice of how close the treaty line was, the wolves would surely be witness to her murder as well if they were fast enough.
Peering through broken glass, Erica focused on the slowing beat of the blonde girl's heart, her companion already dead at her side.
She would let the girl die on her own, hopefully with the pain of her dead companion slicing through her stilling form.
Erica wanted everyone to feel the pain that she felt. It led her to wonder if perhaps it James who was meant to be her forever, and not the wolf that evoke traitorous emotions from her.
James may never have been the bet person, nor was he ever kind or sweet, but he had always been her everything.
They would have done the same if in her position, Erica attempted to reason with herself, fighting down the small voice of reason and morality that reared its head in her direction. It was Paul's fault that she even hesitated, if only in her mind. He would not like if she did something like this, that she knew and hated that she allowed it to cause even the slightest chance in who she was.
Erica was not a weak-willed person. She was aware that letting herself continuously interact with the shapeshifter was a horrible decision on her part- seeing all the mistakes it would lead her to, the changes that she refused to acknowledge.
Had she been paying closer attention to herself, Erica would have been aware of such changes. Would have realised her reason for feeding simply for necessity and no longer fun, for wanting to simply kill the Cullen's that did her wrong and be done with the dramatics.
She simply wanted revenge in the purest sense of the word and that fact was horrifying.
The blond vampire could remember the moment that she promised to herself that she would play the boy to the extreme because she could, how she would never allow a smidgen of emotion towards him; yet here she was, a nervous twinge clawing at her stomach.
"I don't need anyone other than James," she snarled, teeth gnashing together angrily. "They stole him from me."
Anger filled her at the thought of the Cullen's for ruining her life, at Paul for the offence of living when she did not need any person to get in her way, to change her morals and thoughts from the things she had created with her beloved brother.
Stalking forward, she grabbed hold of the truck and dragged it to the middle of the road causing a loud screeching to follow her as she went.
Entertaining the idea of heading into town, of slaughtering couples in their own homes to fill the void, she wandered back towards the forest.
Her high twinkling laughter followed her as she ran through the trees towards Seattle, wondering if this little event was news worthy compared to all the chaos that they were causing elsewhere.
Her part was done, her time wasted in creating a distraction for an incompetent boy. She wasted no time in looking back or checking in on Riley. If this failed, then she would easily be granted permission to do things her way.
Erica loved when things went her way.
