There was something about running that made her feel free. The way the trees blurred around her, the way everything turned into a mixture of colors was outstanding.
She flits through the woods, her feet barely touching the ground due to her speed. Her hair flowed behind her, catching on various branches. She knew that her hair would e full on leaves and twigs by the end of this.
She forced herself to go impossibly faster, testing how far she could get into their land. Their patrolling was weak; the borders were relatively open. There were five wolves in total, only two were out. They were awful at their job. She knew the set path the took, their pungent scent clung to it. The wolves were slow, too spread out to do the job right.
It was quite funny how easy they were making it for her.
Twitching her fingers in preparation, she flung herself forward. She gripped a branch and pulled herself up and out of their reach.
She swung herself, jumping from tree to tree as the wolves growled and barked at her feet. The wolves were familiar, two that she had seen quite often.
"Alpha," Erica called down to him, a wicked grin on her face "What are the odds of meeting you here?"
The black wolf growled at her, spittle flying from his maw. His body shook, his eyes held furry at her position perched out of his reach.
"Let's play a game," Erica narrowed her game. "I try to get little Bella within reach, and you try to stop me."
Pushing herself in motion, she landed to the ground gracefully. Not wasting a second, her body was already flying over the land. A loud howl sounded behind her, followed by heavy footfall.
"The Cavalry is coming, the Cavalry is coming," Erica taunted.
Blonde hair whipped around her, curly locks flying all over. She could feel strands getting caught on her surroundings, stray pieces trying to pull from her head.
She felt teeth nip at her feet and she grinned mischievously. They were far into the land now, nearly at the beaches. She simply needed to pass the tree line, her game would be won if she passed onto the beach.
She pushed harder, every step focused to test the abilities of the large bodies. Her petite frame gave her the advantage; with agility and finesse on her side, she could slip away before they could reach her. Her ability made her even matched to the pack, perhaps better.
Bare feet met soft dirt. Imprints were hardly left in her wake. The rush and flurry in the pit of her stomach had her laughing aloud to herself.
A thought flashed across her eyes, a vague memory of when she was a child. Hunting, tracking was the only source of income for the poorer families. The families that didn't have the skill sets to run a far, to aid in the construction of the new land. She could recall the way James would chase her, how her Papa would encourage her to run as fast as her little legs could carry her. The excited shrieks of a little girl would echo throughout the trees, often accompanied by deep laughter.
She could recall the way she would call for her Mummy, the way her tiny hands would cling to her mother's thick skirt as it if it could grant her some sort of safety.
Erica yelped softly as she nearly ran into a tree, her eyes widening once she realized that she had gotten lost n thought. Her past was often repressed, something that James often viewed as weakness. Her brother was quite right, as usual.
Letting her mind calculate for her dangerous mistake, she changed her path. Sliding to a stop, she slammed her hand into the nearest wolf sending the beast flying backwards. Turning in time, she ducked under the attack of the next one. Erica took note of it's size and stature and decided she didn't like this wolf. His brown fur was soft and welcoming, inviting her to reach out and feel the texture but it's eyes held hatred.
She sent the animal a playful kiss.
Feet pounded the earth behind her as she began to hear the waves. A triumphant grin plastered itself onto her face as she realized that she had basically won; the pack of dogs could not risk exposure.
Letting her emotions get the best of her, she felt as snow began to stick to her stone skin. It began slowly, picking up pace the closer she got to the beach. A salty breeze began to mix with the crisp smell of winter sow.
She could distinguish various scents, one being his; the hot smell of summer with a hint of wet dog. She could tell that he was nearby, close enough for her to distinguish. She was thankful she hadn't seen him, she wasn't positive that she could deal with that; wolf maybe, skin definitely not.
Theoretically, it was easy for her to ignore the mate pull. When it's nothing but a concept, she could berate and belittle him all she wanted. It frightened her that she might not react how she wanted in person. Already, she could feel her mouth watering with venom at his proximity.
The beach came into view. Children played in the sand, a couple sat on an abandoned driftwood log. Erica could see the sun peaking from the clouds, see the way it shimmered against the murky water. In the distance stood cliffs, tall with waves crashing gently against them.
Erica felt her shoulder crack as she flew through the air. She landed on her side, a loud thump echoed through the air. Dazed and confused, she blinked quickly. Everything clicked into place easily, immediately putting her on defense.
To her side, a wolf was pulling itself to it's feet. It shook his large head around in, obviously disorientated by throwing itself at her. It was a dark grey in color and Erica could feel sparks shoot across her body from where it had touched her.
She growled at the animal, the sound originating from deep in her throat. Erica glared heatedly at him before glancing around. Her ears strained for any sign of life any heartbeat.
The wolves circled her. They were crouched low, their stomachs grazed the earth as the stalked closer.
It was strange to be viewed as the prey, but she wouldn't allow herself to panic. They were nothing but dogs. Erica was a natural predator, everything about her being designed to kill. She didn't fear a bit of drool.
She was thankful she opted out of wearing shoes.
Arching a delicate eyebrow, she lazily gazed up at the wolves. Her expression screaming boredom.
With her body on the ground, she took a moment to roll her shoulder. Her eyes left the wolves to asses the damage done. Erica gripped the her of her top lightly before pulling it above and her head and dropping it to the side. Her finger prodded at the cracks in her marble skin, tracing them as they slowly began to knit together.
Knowing that her nonchalant attitude was aggravating the wolves, she kept her sense of them. She was crazy but not suicidal.
"I didn't think you were capable of hurting me Paul," Erica spoke. She looked toward the wolf with faux sad eyes. "I thought you were better than that."
The wolf whimpered, his eyes flickered from her chest to her shoulder. Paul lowered himself low to the ground, rubbing his stomach against the earth. It was different than the others; she couldn't detect any trace of malice.
Erica dropped her hands low to the ground. She could feel the tension growing. Preparing for an attack that was to surely come at any moment. Her fingers flexed, her hands hovered at her side in anticipation.
"You're all slow to move," she huffed impatiently. "If this is how you protect your people then they'll all be dead soon."
Refusing to look back at Paul, she looked to the other wolves. Erica locked eyes with each one, daring them to be the first to make a move. Reaching the large brown one, she grinned as his front paw twitched.
"I would like to get this over with," she directed to him. "I'm rather hungry."
Erica was ready for the lunge. The large animal launched itself at her, it's front paws pressing into her chest. Her hands found themselves gripping at fur instantly. Her head turned to the side as it snapped at her head.
Growls and barks surrounded them as her fingers latched on his neck. It had been a very long time since Erica had looked at body of a wolf, yet she knew that James had taught her where to the main artery was when they were still human.
Small hands pressed on the windpipe, ready to rip it out when he disappeared from on top of her. In it's place stood a dark grey wolf. His fur brushed against her bare chest, his hackles raised.
Paul stood above her protectively, his body rigid. The boy was ready to fight any of his fellow wolves if they stepped too close to her.
"Well this is an interesting turn of events," Erica commented.
The brown one snarled at her words, spittle flying from his mouth.
"You have to be the most disgusting animal I have ever encountered. Can you werewolves people get rabies?" Erica eyes him with disgust.
The brown one lunged for her again, meeting Paul head on. She stood slowly, her eyes set on the brawling pair. It began as a slow ache in her chest, slowly turning into a burning sensation as she watched her mate get hurt. Every part of her being pushed her to put an end to it, to put an end to the one that was hurting him.
Before Erica could even comprehend what she was doing, she stood in front of Paul, her arms wrapping around the neck of the other wolf as he came toward her. A blue ice exploded from her hands, leaking into the boy's body.
He tensed in her arms before he violently began to shiver. Slowly, he began to shake in her hold, struggling to get away from her. Locking her hold tighter, she began to add more pressure.
Anger surged through her as Paul limped towards her, his blood dripped to the floor slowly. The scent was intoxicating, pushing her min into a frenzy. She could kill them all, wanted to kill them all.
She dropped the wolf to the earth with a thud. She took cautious steps towards her shirt lay on the earth and slipped it over her head, never turning her back to the animals.
The cracking and shifting of bones drew her attention to the shaking wolf. She watched in awe as his fur gave away to skin. He gazed up at her with wide eyes.
"What kind of monster are you?" he spoke through shattering teeth.
Erica tilted her head to the side as she studied him closely. Never had she done something like that to a person. His reaction was interesting.
"You're still cold," she observed. "Ever after I have stopped touching you."
"No shit," he grumbled.
Stifling a laugh, Erica flashed to his side. She touched his skin, ignoring the way he flinched away from her with a scowl and the way an all too familiar wolf growled.
"You do not seem cold to me." She frowned thoughtfully. "How peculiar."
Shutting her eyes, Erica shushed the boy that tried to speak. She growled to him every time he attempted to move. Focusing on the same blue ice, she visualized it leaving his body.
She felt her body being shoved away as the boy stood before her, anger radiating off of him. He shook, a sign she had learnt to associate with their shifting.
Erica lowered herself into a crouch, ready to kill the boy before he had time to turn. All it took was one bite, a useful tidbit she had learnt from Paul.
"You don't smell remotely appetizing, but I will still enjoy watching the blood leave your body," she hissed to him.
He snarled in her direction, his body beginning to convulse. Erica lunged at him, a blur of blonde as she flew forwards, tackling him to the floor. Her fingers danced across his neck, prodding at the various veins as he bucked and shoved against her.
Ice burned a trail along his skin, snow collected in thick layers on the ground. The wolves behind her snarled and snapped, each wanting her to stop.
Feeling a tug on the back of her shirt, she shook herself from her daze and faced a sad looking furry Paul. His teeth tugged on her shirt, pulling her away from his pack mate. Erica let him lead her away, keeping her eyes locked with his.
"I would have killed him," she whispered, knowing full well every wolf could hear her. "Do not take this for weakness because I would have killed him and thought nothing of it. I am every bit the monster you think I am, but you are all every bit a beast."
Erica disappeared in a flurry of ice, snow and chaos; not a trail was left in her wake.
