Enmity

Anya, a bubbly little ten year old girl with curly black hair adorned in two ponytails, was proudly flaunting her mother's handiwork to her classmates . Meanwhile  Ayaan , a silent ten and half year old boy who was apparently too serious for his age , was minding his own business while sitting in the corner seat of the first bench trying to be attentive and look studious. It was clear from the very beginning that these two were opposite poles of magnet , different sides of a coin, i,e two people who were very different in their thinking. Where Anya was showy and a chatterbox, Ayaan was quiet , introverted and straight forward.

Roll numbers were distributed according to first name and therefore Ayaan and Anya had adjacent roll numbers. And incidentally they were allotted seats according to their roll numbers which led to their first meeting on becoming bench partners. Their bench was the middle most in the middle row and both of them were unhappy about that for  very different reasons, Ayaan because he didn't get the first bench and Anya because she didn't get the last bench. As days went by it was clear that both of them didn't like each other. Ayaan was too boring, serious, hostile and dumb- looking for her sake while Anya was way too loud and giggly for her own good according to Ayaan. But both decided to tolerate each other owing to the situations in their respective homes. Anya was keeping quiet because of her father's condition while Ayaan because he wanted to prove that he was a worthy capable son of his father.

Everything went on smoothly until the day of their first unit test when these two bench partners started showing their true colors. Ayaan wrote his paper, hiding it from the neighboring students preventing them from copying and thus trying to become an ideal student all while mentally trying to shine out in his teachers eyes owing to his manners and ethics. While Anya, a bit clueless as ever, was trying to seize any opportunity she got to peek in her fellow classmates' paper , one in particular , and trying to get a bit more marks than she deserved. But Ayaan without fail prevented all her efforts and victoriously succeeded in shielding his paper through out the exam . By the end of the exam Anya had made up her mind against her bench partner considering his un-helping attitude, while Ayaan had developed disdain in his mind against Anya thinking her as a girl with less ethics and sense of honor .

From then on they didn't even try to hide their dislike for each other and stopped tolerating each other completely. This led to the start of a new phase of enmity which continued for years. They did everything to harass each other from playing pranks to spreading rumors. Anya would open the lid of his water-bottle every now and then which would make his whole school bag, bench and floor wet while Ayaan would erase all Anya's classwork when she was not on her desk. From spreading silly rumors like Ayaan wets his bed every night and that Anya still sucks on her thumb while sleeping, to huge pranks like purposefully displacing teacher's stuff which would lead to the teacher blaming Ayaan for his carelessness considering he was the class monitor . And in return Ayaan would create fights between Anya and other bully-type popular girls by making their ego a soft target. Many times these pranks landed them into troubles , punishments but luckily none of them serious enough to involve their parents. This continued for the next 2 years. They both unknowingly became the center of each other's universe but in a negative way.

They were popular in the school, so were the stories of their enmity. Ayaan was popular for being a studious and teacher's pet student while Anya was popular because of her sense of humor, extrovertness and kind nature. Everything became routine until the day Ayaan's dad had to transfer again and Ayaan had to leave the school . Anya was elated and sad at the same time , elated because she would not have to see his face again and ironically sad for the same reason . On the other hand, Ayaan was just feeling numb by the situation as his father expected him to take changes as a course of nature without showing displeasure . His father had taken his right even to be sad.

Although both decided to call a truce before the day Ayaan had to leave, their pride stopped them and their enmity did not get a closure.
