five: camped away

"frau tirena!" he shouted to her, his spittle all over her dirty face. "ich werde nur einmal mehr fragen!"

"i've already told you, i don't know." anne spoke, shaking her head. "and even if i did, i wouldn't tell you."

the soldier remained calm, despite having faced numerous hours of torture and pain. her heart still slammed against her ribcage, and she could still feel the endless panic clawing at her.

"i really just don't want to answer your questions, mister heinz. nothing against you. well, actually, everything against you." anne sighed, shrugging with whatever energy she had left. "just, you aren't really my type, darling."

the german man turned to his comrade, muttering something about english in german. she spoke german, she just didn't really feel like speaking it to them.

"miss tirena, my partner would greatly appreciate it if you-" he was promptly interrupted by anne.

"your partner? so sweet. a true modern day love story." she spoke sarcastically, making her voice seem genuine. she watched as the american man went into a panic.

"no! he's not my, i'm not his- what?!" he spat, scowling. "mister heinz would greatly appreciate it if you would speak german."

"tell herr heinz that he can have it up the ass. i'm not answering his stupid questions." anne retaliated, glaring at the men. "you assume that i can't take your torture."

the translator turned to heinz, muttering something. he responded, though this time, speaking to anne.

"du musst mir antworten! wo sind deine gegenstücke?" he shouted, obviously becoming more and more frustrated.

"i have no idea where my lovely ladies are! i've been here for a month, idiot. they haven't come for me yet." anne shouted, spitting at his feet. "i don't care for you, really."

"nimm sie weg." he muttered to his translator, waving a hand away. "ich will sie nicht sehen."

"ich werde das machen." the translator obeyed his orders, taking anne by the wrists, untying her from that chair, linking her arms in cuffs.

he exited the room, letting out a slight chuckle. "you sure give him a run for his money." he spoke, and anne turned her head to see his blue eyes. "he doesn't like you, really."

"i'm not an idiot, really. i can tell." anne joked, laughing. "he is quite an idiot, however. honestly, if i was torturing someone, you have to put real effort into it. you can't just give up, you actually have to try to torture them?"

"try to? he did. really. i wasn't sure if you'd ever give in. you're an idiot." he laughed. "anne tirena. what a name for such a person as you."

"well, i suppose my parents didn't expect me to be in a concentration camp in my twenties. not that they should've, really. i mean, they didn't know what one was when they had me." anne pattered on. "but, that's a story, i suppose."

"i would suppose so, miss tirena." he spoke. "i'm about to do something very stupid, and i hope you don't disagree."

"well, i'm all up for stupid things. hell, how do you think i got here?" anne joked, laughing.

his hands let go of her wrists, and she turned around, to find him pushing against her shoulders, pushing her to the wall. she let herself be controlled, feeling his cold lips hit her chapped ones, his hands still pressed firmly against her shoulders.

he pulled his head back as they both breathed, small clouds of fog surrounding the warm air.

"i'm anne."

"joseph. nice to meet you."

"lovely to make your acquaintance."

"well, i suppose that i have to return you to your 'lovely lady,' as you called her. let's move on, now." the brunette american hustled her away, but anne could feel his hands fidgeting. "will i be seeing more of you, then, mister-"

"witicker."

"mister witicker?" she finished her question, turning back to see him looking straight ahead.

"i guess we'll have to see, miss tirena." he whispered, his lips gently brushing against her ear as he leaned forward. "i'd look forward to that..."

"as would i, joseph." anne replied, letting a slight laugh emerge from her parted lips. "until then."

"until then."
