Chapter IX: "Static"

That Saturday, all of Codebreaker Club hopped onto a video call in the band Discord server to celebrate the release of their first group single.

"YouTube says we're premiering in 15 minutes! That's T-15!" Noah announced.

"I can literally feel the chills going down my body! This is so exciting!" said Trinity, whose stimming in her seat could've told anyone that.

"Well, the excitement isn't over yet," Luke replied. "Noah, tell them what you told me!"

Noah nodded. "I was talking to this kid, Saira Hussein, from English, who saw our vlog..."

"The kid who throws that big Halloween party every year?" Trinity wondered aloud. After a bit of silence, she awkwardly cleared her throat. "Sorry, I just...I feel like I know where you're going with this."

"Right," Noah continued. "Xe invited us to play this year's party! We can debut 'Phantoms' there, and since we only have two songs - three if you count 'Break the Code' - we can play a cover or two to round things out!"

"Can I pick one of the covers?" Anita asked. "Asking out Aurora... didn't go very well, so this could be my next biggest chance!"

"She turned you down?!" Trinity was stunned.

"No, I just never asked her," Anita clarified. "I never got the chance in all of the chaos of practice."

"Well, I'm sure we could pull out something romantic for you!" Luke agreed. "What sort of vibe do you want?"

"I don't know her music taste too well," Anita replied. "Me, I'm very much a punk rock girl, but I don't know if she..."

Just then, they heard a knock on Rose's bedroom door. She said to come in, and it turned out to be her mother with her laundry.

"Hope I'm not interrupting anything," Lily Thomas said with a smile.

"You're fine. We were just talking about a gig we got," Rose replied.

"No way! You got a gig this soon? Congrats, honey!" Lily gave a high-five to her daughter. "When is it?"

"Sometime within a week of Halloween. We haven't ironed out the exact details."

She looked a bit nervous about that. "Okay, well, just let me know as soon as possible, because getting time off from the store to drive you is gonna be difficult around that time." Lily worked as a manager for a local store called Wild Time Costumes & Party Shoppe.

"Wait, I have an idea! Hold on," Trinity cut in. She got out of her seat and left the room, leaving her camera to show only an empty chair.

"She does this sometimes," Blaine said, for the sale of Luke, Noah, and Lily.

A minute later, Trinity came back in with an older man beside her: her dad, Jian Lei.

"What's this about a carpool?" Jian asked, before his face turned into one of awe.

Lily's face almost identically matched his. "Trinity, who's this?"

"Bà ba!" Trinity explained. "My idea was to have him drive both Rose and me to the concert. We can come over and pick her up."

"You're Trinity's dad?" said Lily. "I wonder why we've never met before."

"I don't know, but I'm very glad I've met you now," Jian replied.

After a brief beat of silence, Trinity spoke up: "So...carpool?"

"Yeah, that sounds awesome!" Rose replied. Lily nodded in agreement.

"Perfect? Just let me know when to come get you," said Jian.

"I'm looking forward to it," said Lily.

Rose gave her mother a side-eye, and she quickly left the room. A minute later, so did Jian.

"Was that strange to anyone else?" Trinity asked.

"Looked like classic 'awkward flirting' to me," Blaine remarked. "Remember what you said about Justin? How you can't talk right around him? Maybe the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in this case."

"You think our parents like each other?" Rose asked with surprise.

“I think you may not be the only one getting ‘picked up’ on Halloween week, Ro!” Anita confirmed, with a sly smile.

“I…don't get it,” Trinity admitted, slightly embarrassed.

“Hold on,” said Luke, sending Trinity a private message explaining the joke.

“Oh!” she exclaimed with a slight chuckle as she read his DM. “I don't know. I mean…I understand romantic love at first sight, but, really? You think they already wanna do that?”

“Sure! I know I’ve thought about it with Aurora, and we're not even together! Haven't you thought about it with Justin?”

Thankfully, Trinity didn't get the chance to provide her sheepish answer, because Noah soon shouted out, “The premiere countdown is live! I repeat, the premiere countdown is live!”

“Yes! Here we go!” Blaine shouted with excitement.

“Shall we count down together once it gets down to ten?” Rose asked.

The other five nodded and did so, and then they all quieted down and listened to their song together. Their song!

“Never thought I would rise up again. Retired before my graduation, oh woah…”

We did it, Luke thought with disbelief, listening to the words he wrote laid in front of these incredible instrumentals. We made a song! Together!
