Chapter I: "The Four"

“I’m telling you guys,” Anita Cortales insisted to her three best friends in their homeroom, “if, in two years when we get to ninth grade, we end up in a school like the one in High School Musical, that would be the best case scenario!”

“I’m not gonna debate you on how cool that would be,” Rosalina “Rose” Thomas responded, “but it’s not the school from Fame.”

“Yeah, you two go ahead and break into song at random points during the day,” Trinity Lei rolled her eyes. “Meanwhile, I’m going to the school from X-Men with super-powered mutants.”

“I’m not having this conversation with any of you until you watch I Am Frankie,” Blaine Richards came back with. “Robots and secret missions. It’s perfect.”

“Yeah, yeah, Blaine, we all know you’re obsessed with that show,” Anita teased.

“Oh, big talk coming from the girl who constantly listened to Gongo music when she was nine and cried when they broke up,” Blaine came back with.

At this point, the morning announcements went off: “Attention students, sign-ups for this year’s clubs and activities begin next week.”

“Ooh!” Trinity whispered to her friends. “I’m gonna need to remember that. I don’t wanna miss coding club sign-ups.”

“Are you sure, Trin?” Rose asked with surprise. “Are you gonna have enough time with schoolwork and your game?”

“Oh, absolutely!” Trinity brushed off her concern. “I’ll have plenty of time on weekends to work on my game. Besides, I can use the club as an opportunity to gain new skills, which would make my game even better than it was!”

“Oh, that reminds me!” Blaine suddenly cut in. “You guys know what this year’s musical is gonna be?”

“Yeah, they’re doing that 80s jukebox, Mamma Mia,” Rose responded. “A bunch of flyers are going up. I’m surprised you didn’t notice.”

“I move very quickly from my locker to class! You know this!” Blaine defended himself.

“Ugh, Mamma Mia! That one’s so cheesy!” scoffed Anita.

“Well, if you’re going to be like that, you don’t have to come this year.” Blaine was always defensive about the musicals he was a part of, or wanted to be.

“Oh, and before I forget, flyers went up for the basketball tryouts, too,” Rose turned to say to Anita.

“Ooh, nice!” Anita had wanted to try out last year, but got too swamped with schoolwork. Since dropping to lower-level classes, she figured she’d have enough time this year. Plus, it didn’t hurt that she had a homeroom with her three best friends now.
Suddenly, the bell rang. “Okay, everyone, settle down! Class is about to begin!” their teacher called. The four turned to face the board and pulled out their notebooks, ready to begin the day.
