S2E2 Back in black
Robby was at Miyagi-Do, at the punching bag. A look of anger on his face as he stroked the bag over and over. Daniel was inside hanging up the photos of all of Mr. Miyagi's family that did karate as well as Mr. Miyagi. He sighed softly. "Pretty big shoes to fill." He said as he looked at all of them.
Sam had pulled into Miyagi-Do, getting out of the car and walking through the gate. Her phone started to ring, pulling it out of her pocket she smiled when Aisha's name pulled up. She answered, putting it to her ear. "It's about time I heard from you. Do you miss me?" She asked in a joking tone. "A lot." Miguel answered. "Please don't hang up, Aisha doesn't know I'm using her phone." Sam's smile fell when she heard his voice. "What do you want?" She asked him. "I know I screwed up. I made a mistake. I just want things to go back to the way they were." His voice was quite and pleading. "Well, it's not that easy. Look, Miguel I..." She trailed off when she saw Robby at the punching bag, he looked over at her briefly. "I can't talk right now, just ask Aisha to call me back." With that she hung up the phone. She looked over at the boy. "I thought it was Aisha." She told him with a half smile. "You can talk to whoever you want." Robby replied in a grumbling voice.
"Hey guys." Daniel said, walking towards them, his voice happy. "Perfect attendants on day one." Sam turned to her dad with a wide smile. "So what's our first lesson?" She asked. Daniel looked over at her. "You'll see." He glanced between his students. "Come on. Let's go." His voice was happy. Daniel lead them to where the cars were. He pulled out a knife and cut a bag of sand open, making a circle. "If we're going to play in the sand can't we just go to the beach?" Sam asked, looking at her dad. "No, not today." He said straightening back up. "It's been a long time since this dojo's had more then one student. You figure with two people you have twice the defense, right?" Robby shrugged with a slight nod and Sam was nodding yes. "Wrong. One of the cornerstones of Miyagi-Do karate is "always moving in a circle" and with the wheel technique you'll soon see that two people can be as strong as twenty. Now are you ready?" Daniel looked at them. "Yes Mr. Larusso." Robby said, his voice serious. "Let's do this." Sam was smiling wide. "All right. Let's get in the circle." The two teens walked into the sand circle. "Face me. Bow." Daniel instructed, the three bowing together. "Face each other. Bow." The two turned to each other and bowed, not once breaking eye contact
Eli, Bert and Aisha stood there. A thoughtful look on Eli's face. "What do you think Shit-head one and Shit-head two?" He asked. "I was thinking more of Mary-Kate and Ass-hat." Aisha said, making Eli laugh. "Well, I'm-" Chris started to say but was cut off. "Did I say you could talk?" Eli said in a loud and intimidating voice. Miguel walked up. "Look guys, there just messing with you." He said with a small smile, his voice nice and kind. "Thanks man." Chris said, shaking hands with Miguel . "Plus everyone knows your names are Ass-face and Douchebag." Miguel said happily as he started walking, making Eli laugh. Mitch leaned towards Chris. "Dibs on Ass-face." He said in a whisper.
The door opened, the bell chiming to let them know someone was coming. John Kreese, the original Sensei of Cobra Kai when Johnny was a student, walked in. He looked at some of the thin, nerdy students. "Jesus Christ." He whispered in disappointed and disapproval. "Who's he?" Eli asked Miguel, eyeing the man. Miguel looked confused. "I don't know." Kreese was walking the edge of the mat, eyeing the students. Miguel stepped towards him. "Can I help you with something, sir?" He asked. Kreese looked him over before shaking his head. "No. But I can help you." He told Miguel. "Hey." Johnny's voice was heard as he walked from the back room. "Uh, Sensei.." Miguel gestured to the man. Kreese walked up to Johnny, the two standing close. "What the hells wrong with you? I said tomorrow." Johnny said in a low voice. "Tomorrow, today. Who can keep track?" Kreese asked making Johnny sigh
Robby and Sam stood in the circle. In the beginning they were moving in sync. "Nice. Now show me the wheel." Daniel said as he watched them, that's when they where at their own times, when they backs were turned towards each other. "No, you two need to be perfectly in sync or this technique won't work." The two teens looked at him. "Technique? This feels more like a dance." Robby said with some confusion in his voice. "Yeah, when do we do the hokey pokey and turn ourselves around?" Sam threw in. "Okay guys, trust me. If you both master this no one will mess with you, come on let's try again." They moved back into the position when they started to become off.
"You need to do it at the same time." Daniel said when they tried a second time, "How are we supposed to stay in time if we can't see each other?" Robby asked. Daniel looked over at him. "You need to sense what your partner is doing even if you can't see them." Sam and a Robby shared a look. "How are we supposed to do that? The Force?" Her voice held a tiny bit of sarcasm. Daniel went to reply when his phone chimed with a new message. "Shoot. I got to go help your mom with some. I'll be back as soon as I can. Keep trying, just feel it okay." He had started to back up before turning and heading to the car. The two sighed before starting again
Johnny stood in front of his students. "Today we have a visitor. This is Mr. Kreese. He's just a observer, pretend like he isn't even here." Johnny told them, casting the man a side glance. "Mr. Diaz, warm them up." He moved to stand by Kreese as Miguel moved to the front. He bowed to the others and they bowed back. "Front kick!" He called, everyone following suit. "Front strike!" The group moved in perfect sync. "Side dab!" Miguel called, everyone dabbing then breaking into laughter. Johnny looked down, Kreese was staring intensely at him. "What the hell was that?" Johnny demanded. Miguel looked back at him. "We're just messing around. We have 11 and a half months until the next All Valley." He seemed slightly confused as to why Johnny seemed different, on edge. "Yeah and we already know how to kick ass." Eli said, the group around him laughing. "Oh, really, so you're done huh? Nothing left to learn?" Johnny's eyes were fierce. Aisha giggled some, Johnny looked over and approached, standing in front of her. "What's so funny, Ms. Robinson?" Aisha tried to hold back her laughter. "Sorry, Sensei. You wouldn't understand." He narrowed his eyes at her. "Try me."
Aisha leaned a bit closer to him. "It's a snake-do." She told him. Johnny didn't understand. "What's a 'Snake-do'?" He questioned, everyone put a elbow on the arm, holding the other hand up like a snake head, making a hissing sound. Kreese looked disappointed. "Quite!" Johnny yelled, everyone instantly stopped. "5:00 am tomorrow morning. Corner of Fulton and Raymer. You don't show and you're off the team. Class dismissed." Johnny was anger as he walked into the back room, Kreese following him.
It was 5:00 am, the Cobra Kai students where mixing cement. Some were passing bags down the line. Aisha was stirring it with a shovel. "Don't add to much water, you want it nice added thick." Johnny said, watching from the side. "Sensei why are we mixing cement?" Miguel asked, out if breath, stirring in a different wheelbarrow then Aisha. "No questions." Johnny said sternly. "All right." Miguel was beat, he went back to his job. "Keep stirring!" Johnny was walking away from them. He walked to stand by Kreese. "Their muscles are gonna ache, sure, but if you want to make them tough you have to give them something to be afraid of. No one's afraid of a little cement." The older man said. "They will be." Johnny said.
A honking horn caught their attention. A cement mixing truck was pulling into the area. Kreese glanced over at Johnny. Johnny walked up to the truck driver, talking and shaking hands with him, it was obvious that they knew each other. He handed Johnny the keys before walking off. The students shared confused looks.
Sam was practicing the wheel technique when Robby walked into the dojo, he seemed upset. "Hey, um, was the first turn clockwise or counterclockwise?" She asked him. "I don't remember. What's the point even? How's a stupid dance going to save us in a fight?" He asked in a rough voice before walking off, leaving the stunned and confused girl behind him in the ring of sand.
Daniel was taking the bonsai trees off of the wooden wheel in the pond. "Dad?" Sam asked as her and Robby walked back there. "Dad what are you doing?" He got out of the pond, legs soaked. "Mr. Miyagi built this a few years before he died. He said it was a monument of balance. Today it's not going to balance bonsai trees, it's going to help you learn the wheel technique." Daniel said with a smile as he walked towards them. "Hop in." He gestured to the pond. "You want us to get in there?" Sam asked, jabbing a thumb at the water. "Yeah."
"You could have told us to bring our swimsuits." Robby said as Sam started to untie her shoes. "Oh come on, a little water never hurt anyone." Daniel said with a smile.
After Sam and Robby took off their shoes, Robby was the first one who started to get in. "Nice and easy." Daniel told him. "Oh, it's cold." He said, making sure he held his hands above the water. "Oh come on its not that bad." The man laughed some. "Oh my God dad what did I just step on?" Sam asked, freaking out, "It's nothing, do the worry about it. Get on each side." He instructed. Robby started to push on the board to lift himself up, his end going into the water. "If we can't do it on the ground how are we supposed to do it on this?" He asked, looking over at Daniel. "On the ground you can't tell when your partner is moving. But on that deck, trust me, you'll know right away. Come on, get on." The two started to get up at the same time, the deck staying some what even. "There you go, find your balance." Sam started to shakily get to her feet. Robby following suit. "There you. Okay, look at Robby, sense each other." Daniel said, his hands out like he can will the deck to stay balanced by that gestured alone. "Okay, get into your starting positions."
They started, the deck as well as themselves wobbling. They were getting to the part where their backs would be turned, Robby slipped, hitting the deck before going into the water. That cause unbalance, Sam stumbling backwards before going into the water. "Not a bad start, okay? You're just finding your footing." Daniel asked them, Robby pushing his longish hair out of his face. "I don't feel like we're finding anything." Robby said, Sam had a panicked look on her face. "Dad when was the last time this thing was cleaned?" He dodged the question. "Come on guys, get back up. That was great." Daniel said instead. Robby started to get back up
Johnny stood in front of the truck, his students surrounding him. "You think winning the All Valley has giving you the right to goof off?" He asked, hands on his hips. "Well I got news for you. Winning on championship doesn't mean squat." He started to pace in front of them. "I true champion never stops training. You keep moving or you get stuck exactly where you are. It's just like the cement in this truck. If that drum doesn't start moving the cement will harden and get stuck. Is that what you want to happen to you?" He stopped walking. "No Sensei!" Everyone said together. "Good. Then climb up, get inside and make it spin." Everyone shared looks. "Sensei we're sorry for messing around." Aisha said. "We've learned our lesson." Eli threw in. Johnny pulled the ladder down, making a loud clang noise. "Get in!" He said in a more demanding voice. "Sensei this seems kinda dangerous. I mean the fumes alone..." Miguel started before being cut off. "Quite!" Kreese yelled, everyone looking over at him, even Johnny. "This man led you to the mountain and you question him? Look at you. Look at all of you. I can't believe this pathetic pack of p*****s made it to the All Valley." Kreese was now standing in front of them all. "And won. It's a absolute miracle. And who made that miracle?" He asked before gesturing to Johnny. "Johnny Lawrence. The best student in the history of Cobra Kai. My student."
Eli looked at him. "You were Sensei's Sensei?" He asked in a amazed voice. "You better believe it. And I'll tell ya, I've never trained a tougher student in my whole life." He glanced over at Johnny. "So if you know what's good for you, you better listen to every goddamn word he says." Miguel took a step forward. "I'll do it, Sensei." He said, head held high. Miguel walked towards the ladder, Johnny patting his back as he passed. He was followed by Eli then Aisha. Miguel looked into the drum. "Holy shit." He said in a small, awed chuckle. He lowered himself down into the left over cement, slipping and falling. Eli followed, slipping but he regained his balance. "This is weird." Miguel said, others have joined them. Johnny looked in. "Don't just stand there, you want to get stuck? Move!" Miguel nods. "All right come on." He moved towards the curving wall, the others following suit.
Robby got back up. "All right, now remember. Use all your senses, feel where your partner is." Daniel told them. They started, getting up to the part. "You ready?" Robby asked. Sam nods. "One, two, three." The two counted together before moving, Sam going faster then him. "Hey, slow down." He said, almost falling. "Yeah, I felt that." Sam nods her head. "Thanks." Robby nods back to her. Robby and Sam complete it without falling. They kept running through it, getting better each time. "Good going." Daniel said proudly as they bowed to him send he bowed back before giving each other a fast bump.
They started pushing at the wall. Nothing was happening. "Come on, push!" Johnny called from outside. Kreese turned his head to the side, looking at Johnny. "Have you ever done this before?" He asked. "Don't worry, I got this." Johnny never looked over at him. "Come on, don't just stand there." Eli said in a strained voice as he put his whole body weight on the wall. It started moving. "There we go! There we go! A little bit faster!" Johnny called to them. The drum started turning faster. "That's it! There you go!" Johnny yelled with a smile on his face. The students outside cheering them on, even Kreese smiled.
They got out of the drum. Johnny spraying them off with a hose. "You should all be proud of yourselves. I know I'm proud. You're parents would be proud, too, if you told them what we did here today, which we won't." He gazed at his students. "You pushed forward like champions. Never stopping, never satisfied, never giving up. And if you keep going and keep pushing them you're going to go places you've never even dreamed of." He was looking directly at Miguel. Miguel smiled and gave him a small nod which Johnny returned.
Robby was sitting on the floor, getting his stuff together. He stood up as Sam ran in. "Hey, took me forever to get dried off but today was awesome." She said with a huge smile on her face. "Yeah, I think we finally got it." He added with a chuckle. "Yeah. Do you need a ride?" Sam offered. "Uh..no." He said pleasantly. Sam nods and went to walk away. "Uh, look, I'm sorry about earlier. I'm just dealing with some stuff at home. My mom took off, I guess she's missed some of her bills. But I'll see you tomorrow?" She nods. "Yeah sure." Robby smiled. "Cool." He turned and walked out. Her smile falling.
Daniel walked up to the photo of Mr. Miyagi. He sighed bit smiled. "Not to bad for a newbie, huh? Maybe I'll earn my wall on to this wall yet." A soft knock heard on the door, Sam walking in. "Hey dad, do you have a sec?" She asked. He looked concerned. "Sure. What's up?" He walked towards her. "How much do you know about Robby's home life?" She asked in a nervous way.
Daniel knocked on Robby's door, the boy opening it barely with the chain still hooked. "Hey Robby." He greeted. "Mr. Larusso?" He closed the door and undid the chain, opening it fully. "What are you doing here?" His face was covered with confusion. "Well, I could lie and say I was in the neighborhood. Is your mom home?" With that Robby looked down, not meeting Daniel's eyes when he stepped closer and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. "It's all right, okay?" Robby looked back up at him.
Daniel brought him back to his house. Robby was sitting at the kitchen table with Sam,eating cereal.
