S1E10 mercy
The All Valley Karate Tournament was today, Miguel stood outside the sports center with his friends, practicing punches. "Miguel, calm down man. Save some for the tournament." Eli said looking over at him. Miguel just sent him a glare and continued. "Hey don't bother he's been super aggro since the breakup." Aisha told Eli. Eli looked over at her before back at Miguel. "Well, where's Sensei? The tournament is going to start soon." Eli said looking around. "He'll be here." Asian replied to them. The small blonde, Bert looked over at them. "I wouldn't be to sure about that." His face and voice held a sad look in them. The two, taller and older humans turned to look at him. "What do you mean by that?" Aisha questioned, eyes slightly narrowed behind her glasses. "Well I saw him last night at the mini mart. I was buying....a carton of milk. When I heard him in the parking lot yelling." He told them the story.
Eli and Aisha were both shocked. " Why didn't you tell us this sooner?" She asked in disbelief. "I don't know. I guess I'm so used to seeing him drunk that it didn't seem like a big deal." Bert shrugged some. "Well we're here, he's not. So it's officially a big deal. What if something happened to him?" Eli said. Bert turned his blue eyes to him. "Like what?" He asked. Eli made a slight face. "I don't know. Like he drove his car off a cliff or bought a gun and blew his brains out." He said it so simply that it was scary. Miguel stopped and straightened up, his disdained eyes looking at the trio. "No Sensei would never kill himself. It's too p***y of a move." Aisha counted Eli's comment with a shake of her head. "Whatever. I mean, we're here. We're going to have to do it with out him." Miguel just started to shake his head. "Do what without me?" Johnny asked as he walked up, a determined look in his eyes. "Sensei." Aisha said in a relived voice as she watched him walk up. "We thought you weren't going to show up." Eli said, ever since joining cobra kai he's been brave and didn't hold his tongue anymore. "I may not always win but I never back down from a fight." Miguel looked over at him, the light and gentleness that used to be on his face was gone. "Great, let's go sign up." He said in a plain voice. "No. Not yet. There's one more lesson I have to teach you." Johnny said, glancing at his students.
The building was crowded, people walking towards the sign in. "All teams go to the locker room in five minutes." A man said over the intercom. "You've all learned how to strike first, be aggressive, not to be losers. I've taught you to strike hard." Johnny was walking in a circle, his students surrounding him, watching and listening to him. "Put every ounce of power behind everything you do. But I haven't taught you the third rule of Cobra Kai...no mercy. The older you get the more you're going to learn that life isn't fair. One day you wake up feeling great and then life throws a spinning heel kick to your balls. You get a F on your test. You get suspended. You fall in love with a girl, then some other dude comes a steals her away." Miguel looked down, a mix of sadness and angry crossing his face. "Your car gets set on fire. You think everything is going great and then it falls apart. That's how it goes. Life shows no mercy, neither do we. We do whatever it takes to keep our heads above the water. We do whatever it takes to move forward. Whatever it takes to win!" Johnny said. Miguel looked determined and ready for a fight. A smirk spread across Eli's face, a dangerous look in his eyes. "Remember who you are. Your badass. You don't give a shit. You kick ass. You're Cobra Kai."
"Cobra kia!" Miguel yelled at the top of his lungs. "Yeah!!" The students echoed around him, just as loud and powerful. "Now let's get down there and kick the shit out of everybody." Johnny's voice held some pride in it at his karate students. Miguel went to pull out his gi from his backpack. "No." Johnny said, Miguel's head snapping up to look at him with a confused look on it. "You're not wearing those." A smirk slowly feel upon his face.
The man stepped into the middle of the area, mic in hand. "Welcome everyone to the 50th anniversary of the All Valley under 18 karate championship!" Everyone in the stadium clapped. "Okay let's start by greeting all the local dojos competing today." He started to read them from a list he had. "From Reseda, returning to the tournament we have..." He trailed off as he heard the chanting of "Cobra Kai." From the side. The Cobra Kai students jogged out in a neat line. They wore black, sleeveless gis, just like the ones from the tournament when Daniel competed. "Now that's what I call a entrance! And a badass name for a dojo. Let's hear it for Cobra Kai!' The man called over the mic. "And now fighting unaffiliated from the North Hills we have Mr. Robby Keene." Robby ran out, bumping his shoulder against Miguel's, casting a glare at Johnny when he passed. "All right! Get ready it's karate time!' He said as he walked off the floor to let it begin.
The first fight was between Miguel and a random boy. Johnny whispered into his ear before the match started. Miguel nods and got into crane position. As soon as they said go and the other advanced, Miguel jumped quickly nailing the boy in the jaw, sending him to the ground. Miguel won that fight and Robby won the next.
Miguel had made the semi-finals. Along with Robby, Xander Stone and Eli. The first fight was going to be Miguel vs Xander. Miguel was in the lead with a spinning back kick to his face, flipping the boy completely over. It was quite impressive, Cobra Kai cheered loudly. It was two to one now. The look on Miguel's face wasn't a familiar one, like a dark mask over a bright face. He won the fight kicking Xander in the ribs. Xander and Miguel shook hands before bowing to each other. "And Diaz is moving into the finals, next is Hawk versus Keene." The announcer called out. Robby walked towards the mat, one of the Senseis patting him on the back as he passed. Johnny had a odd look on his face. "Something wrong Sensei?" Eli asked him. "No." Johnny turned to him, masking any feelings. "Show him what you got." Eli nods, fist bumping Miguel. He jumped onto the mat, a intimidating look on his face.
"Ready to face the fury of the hawk?" Eli asked with a smirk on his face. Robby didn't say anything. The bowed to the ref and then to each other before getting into fighting positions. Robby was instantly at him when they could fight, trying to kick him in the face but Eli took a step back just in time for it to miss him. Eli slammed him to the ground, punching him in the ribs. Robby stared after the boy. "One point hawk." The man declared. Robby got up, moving back into his starting spot, he was unfocused. "Remember what you learned Robby!" Daniel called standing up, Robby looked over at him and Daniel sat back down. Robby gave him a nod, eyes closing as he took deep breaths. Relaxing and focusing. Robby's eyes were still closed when the man said fight but as soon as Eli tried to kick him, he blocked with fast movements. He pushed the boy past him, turning back towards him and rising his guard. Robby won that round with a spinning kick to the face, sending Eli to the ground. Daniel was proud of him. "Yeah there you go Robby." His voice was excited as well. "That was a lucky point. It's going to be your last." Eli said in a low voice. "Why are you living early to fix that stupid haircut?" Robby shot back, venom in his voice.
Robby turned his back on Eli to get to his spot when Eli kicked him in the back, sending him harshly to the ground where he yelped in pain. The ref pulled Eli away and towards the other cobra kai students. "Robby!" Johnny moved quickly to get to his side. " That's enough! Illegal contact. You're disqualified." Eli looked angry. "That's bullshit."
"Are you okay?" Johnny asked, kneeling by Robby. "Get away from me." Robby said, holding his arm. The ref came to Johnny and pulled him back. "Get back on your side." He told the man. Johnny was back up and lightly hit Eli's arm. "What the hell where you thinking man?!" He demanded. Daniel looked over, hearing them. Miguel grabbed Eli's arm and pulled him off the mat, it was obvious he wasn't happy even if he hated Robby, Eli shouldn't have down that. The ref helped Robby up, Robby keeping his right arm cradled against his chest. He was walking towards the back rooms. "With that disqualification. Keene has earned a trip to the finals. We will see him back here after a short break." The announcer said
Daniel got up and followed Robby back. Robby was gently touching his shoulder, wincing in pain. "You remembered to focus." Daniel said, catching his attention. "You had me up on that tree for hours." His voice was light. "Look, Robby, your dad and I ... we have issues but..you and him? That's a different story." Daniel was saying. Robby looked down, shaking his head ever so slightly almost unnoticeable. "I'm sorry I lied to you, Mr. Larusso. I just wanted to get back at him." He said softly. "I know." Daniel sat as he sat down on the bench. "But you'll never find balance that way. You can't let thar bad blood change you. I'm not saying you have to like the guy. I know I never will, but he-he is your dad. And believe me, you're lucky to have one. You just have to remember he's not a monster. He's just a guy with a lot of demons." Johnny was walking down the hall to check on Robby. He froze, his eyes fixed on a picture of John Kreese. "Mr. Miyagi told me that there's no such thing as a bad student only a bad teacher and your dad had the worst teacher of all. Sent him down the wrong path. But you don't need to go down that path, you understand? You never have to become...him." Robby was looking up at the man, his eyes looked sad. "Trust me, when you let go of all that anger, no matter what happens tonight, you go home feeling great."
Robby smiled only slightly. "I don't know about that. My shoulder is killing me. I..I don't think I can fight." He told Daniel. Daniel stood up. "Well, we'll see about that." He said, walking over to the boy. Daniel clapped his hands together, rubbing them fastly like Mr. Miyagi did when his leg was hurt. "Medic!" He then called out, stopping. "Is there a medic?" He held up a finger to Robby and walked out of the room.
"The final match will begin shortly." The man said over the intercom, Miguel was on the mat stretching. Aisha and Sam walked back in laughing. "Sam." Miguel said, standing up and moving towards them. "I'll see you later." Aisha told Sam before walking away. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry for the other night." He apologized. "You mean when you hit me?" She asked, arms crossed over her chest. "It was a accident, I wasn't trying to hit you." Miguel tried to tell her, "You shouldn't have been trying to hit anyone." Sam said in disbelief, uncrossing her arms and letting them hang at her sides. "You bring another dude to the party and you expect me to be okay with that?" His face was frowned with confusion and some disbelief of his own. "I expected you to act like a normal person. You don't even know Robby and yet you were trying to start a fight with him." Sam was getting frustrated, you could hear it in her voice. "You have to strike first. You don't wait for the enemy to attack." Miguel told her. Sam gave him a look of shock. "The enemy? Do you even hear yourself? I don't even know who you are anymore." Miguel had a anger look on his face now. "Well just wait. Watch what I do to Robby in the finals." And with that he walked away from her.
The medic was checking out Robby's shoulder. "Do you feel any pain here?" She asked in a kind voice, Daniel was watching them. "Yeah." Robby said in a rushed voice. "Does it hurt when I do this?" She asked, squeezing lightly in a area. He nodded his head."Yeah." She got ready. "Are you ready?" She asked him. She popped his joint back in place making him groan in pain. "I'm sorry, it was a minor interior dislocation. I just popped it neck into place but you're going to be feeling it for the next few weeks." She told him and placed a ice pack on the spot. "Thanks doctor, we appreciate it." Daniel said as she was walking out. "Listen you don't need to fight." Robby looked up at him, "Yes I do. I'm gonna have to face him sooner or later, it might as well be today." Daniel looked at him proudly and gave him a slight nod.
"This is it folks. The moment we have been waiting for. The final match to see who will be victor and champion. Will it be Miguel Diaz from Cobra Kai karate?" The announcer gestured to the boy, some people in the crowd cheering. "Or will it be Robby Keene unif-" that was as far as he got before a woman rushed on the mat and whispered something in his ear. "Daniel Larusso is going to couch?" He asked before looking at the crowd. "Daniel Larusso is going to couch, change of plans folks. Robby Keene is now fighting for Miyagi-Do karate. With former champion Daniel Larusso as his Sensei. How about that?" The cheering from the crowd as loud. Daniel was rolling up his sleeves. "Good luck gentleman." He said as he moved off the mat. Daniel and Johnny where on the edge as the walked along the back and met in the middle. "What do you think you're doing?" Johnny asked. "Couching my student. Someone needs to be there for him. " Daniel was buttoning his sleeves as he talked, not looking at Johnny. "Do you think this is funny." The fury in Johnny's voice was a unsettling one. "Do you see me laughing?" Daniel asked, looking up at him. "You're going to regret this when it's over." Johnny said as he started walking away. "Yeah. Like this will ever be over." Daniel said with a huffed laugh
The two walked back to their corners. "Remember, no aggression. Let him come to you." Daniel told Robby as soon as he reached him. Robby gave him a nod. Johnny reached Miguel. "You know what to do. You trained all year for this." Johnny said, his eyes were on Robby. "Don't worry, Sensei. I'll make sure Larusso or that kid doesn't go home a winner." He replied as he headed out onto the mat.
The fight had begun, Robby was blocking each kick and punch Miguel threw at him, he shoved him back and that gave him enough room and time to kick Miguel in the chest, scoring the first point. "Remember the pitching machine. Don't get hit." Johnny told him as the next round started. Miguel started with a spinning back kick which Robby blocked. Miguel was dodge very well, he brought the heel of his foot down on Robby's injured shoulder before kicking him to the ground by the chest. It was one to one now. Next round, Miguel hit him in the shoulder before sweeping his leg. Robby landed on his shoulder, in very bad pain as Miguel punched him in the chest, claiming another point, "Time!" Daniel said as he stood up. He went to Robby kneeling in front of him. Robby was holding his arm, breathing heavily. "Focus Robby. Look at me." Daniel tried to get his attention, Robby's eyes on Miguel. "Just remember to breath and focus. Just..find your balance." Daniel told him. The ref walked over. "Are you ready Keene? Can you continue ?" He asked, his voice fairly kind. "Yeah." Robby nodded standing up, Daniel went back to his spot.
Robby had his eyes closed, his injured arm holding onto his ribs and was being kept close to his body, he was doing the breathing exercises Daniel had taught him, to help focus him. Robby managed to block everything on handed, he slung Miguel some but he went out of bounds so it didn't count for anything. "All right Robby. Stay focused." Daniel said, slapping happily. When the rest round began Miguel quickly kicked Robby to the ground, trying to kick him but Robby rolled out of the way. Robby moved quickly, going on his uninjured hand and using both feet to kick Miguel, he had mastered what Daniel was trying to learn. It was two to two now, last point wins.
Miguel was kneeling on the ground. Robby walked over to give him a hand up. Miguel grabbed Robby's injured shoulder and jerked down, a popping sound could be heard. The ref didn't call it though. "Come on ref!" Daniel said angrily. The crowd starting to boo. "Robby come here." Daniel called him, the boy walked over holding his arm. "I'm going to tell him to end it." The boys eyes went wide. "No no no no let me finish." He said. Daniel sighed. "Okay just be careful."
Miguel went over to Johnny. "I found his weakness Sensei. It's his shoulder." The boy informed though that was something obvious. "Listen, I know we want to win, but it has to be the right way. We don't have to fight dirty." Johnny said in a low voice. "Dirty? There's nothing dirty about winning. You taught me that. Don't worry, I got this. No mercy." Miguel turned heading back to the mat. Johnny's face was hard to read but it didn't hold a ounce of happiness or proudness its it.
Robby went to kick Miguel but he caught his leg. Miguel lifted his leg in a kick, hitting his shoulder. He kept go of Robby's leg and kicked him in the stomach. Robby fell to the ground. Miguel and Cobra Kai had won the championship. The Cobra Kai students ran up hugging Miguel. Robby bowed through he didn't get one back. "Robby, Robby," Johnny said trying to get to his son but Miguel caught him by the shoulder. "We won Sensei." Robby was with Daniel as the announcer stepped up. "Who saw that coming? I sure didn't. Let me present the trophy to this year's new champion, Miguel Diaz and Cobra Kai dojo! Is there anything you want to say to the people son?" He offered the mic to Miguel and he took it. Daniel had lead Robby to back, a arm gently around his shoulders.
"I just wanted to say I wouldn't be here if iwft wasn't for my Sensei. This is for my Sensei Johnny Lawrence and Cobra Kai!" Miguel said enthusiastically. Johnny had his head hung for a moment, he didn't seem at all happy. The students started to chant cobra kai.
Johnny got off the mat and quickly moved to Daniel and Robby. "Robby." He said catching their attention. "I...I'm I'm sorry." He apologized. Robby looked at him, there was no anger in his eyes. "It's okay dad. It's okay. Let's go Mr. Larusso." Robby started to walk away but Daniel lingered back for a moment. "You got what you wanted Johnny. You won. Congratulations." Daniel said before following Robby.
Robby abd Daniel were in the car, it was night. Robby looked down at the trophy in his hands. "Second place. I came so close." He said in a disappointed voice. "Hey you fought with honor, he didn't so no matter what thar trophy says you're the real winner. You should never proud of yourself. I sure am." Daniel told him, glancing over. Robby smiled some. "Thanks. I'm sure my dad's happy too, Cobra Kai won. Their going to take over karate in the valley."
"Yeah right. Over my dead body." Daniel said. Robby looked around, a confused look now on his face. "Where are we going?"
Daniel opened a wooden gate. "Come on." He motioned to Robby. They walked past cars covered by tarps. "Who's cars are these?" He asked curiously. "Do they worry about that, follow me." Was all Daniel responded with. The were now in the backyard. "Is this were you bury your bodies or something?" Robby asked. "I know I said you have to let go of all that past anger but when the fight comes to you, you need to know how to fight back. And to do that we'll need more students," Daniel said, flipping a switch and lighting up the backyard. "Welcome to Miyagi-Do karate."
