Chapter 7

Loki stared at the tally marks on his containment room wall, he'd been here two months. The cuts on his back had faded to scars, and the marks on his arms and face were gone. It was nearly time to try and make an escape. Yet, something was holding him back, something that made him want to stay here.

He knew exactly what it was. It was the violet eyed nurse who came to see Loki everyday. Speaking of Silver, it should be about time for her to come waltzing into his containment unit. She was late today. Something must have happened. Silver was never late, she arrived exactly at the same time every day with robotic precision.

The door clanged open and Silver rushed in, Loki was taken slightly aback by her appearance. She didn't look professional and collected today. Her blue hair was coming loose from it's braid, and she looked like she'd been crying.

 "Silver, is something wrong?"

"No. Everything's fine."

She was lying. Loki had gotten to know Silver well over the past month or so, and she was a terrible liar. "That's not true."

Silver sat down on her stool, Loki noticed her hands were shaking slightly. "I'm a nurse."

"I'm aware."

"So I am sworn under oath to help and heal wherever I can."

"I know Silver."

She took a shaky breath, running her hands absently through her blue bangs. "There is a small planet not too far from here...People are sick. Innocent people are dying. The Nova Corps won't let me go help."

Why was Silver so distressed about something happening in another realm? Why did she care whether those people lived or died? She didn't know them. "Why do they matter to you?"

"Because I know I can help, if I don't and people die, that blood is on my hands."

Loki had never thought about anything that way. Unless you gripped the weapon that killed someone, you weren't their killer. Silver was a better person than Loki by far, he knew this. Slowly the bright light of a plan began forming in Loki's agile mind. A way to get both himself and Silver out of this accursed prison. "I'll take you to the planet."

"You can't."

"I can. I know my way through the realms, if you get me out of this cell, I can form a portal to the realm you seek."

Loki could practically see the cogs turning in Silvers head,  he knew what she would say next, and he dreaded it. And Hated it. Hated that someone he had come to care for would never be able to trust him.

"Why should I trust you? How do I know you won't kill me as soon as I've let you out?"

Loki sighed, "You really shouldn't trust me Silver. You don't have any way of being sure. But I promise you, I won't allow any harm to come to you."

"Truth?"

"Truth."

Loki held out his hand, "We can shake on it if you like."

Silver glanced at his hand, and then extended her own. Her hands were warm, a sharp contrast to Loki's cold skin. Silver's fingers were unexpectedly calloused and her grip was strong as she shook Loki's hand.
